What I love so much about these scene is that Dutch doesn't question his men at all. He believes what his men are saying. No questions asked.

and unlike modern movies the film is content to allow us to infer that through their acting.
Don't forget the interaction between Dillon and Mac. To Mac and the other men, Dillon is the outsider, the fifth wheel who command has ordered them to lug around even if he's an accomplished soldier in his own right and he's second in command only to Dutch. There are several scenes where the men demonstrate that they don't think very highly of Dillon at all. Mac tells Dillon he'll gut him if he gives away their position. But in this scene the veneer drops. They refer to each other by rank and they're all brutally honest with how confused and scared they are. And of course at the end, Dillon goes to get Mac

The tone of his voice and the way he delivers that line always sends a chill down my spine.
Absolutely. There's no overdramatic close-up. No overselling it. He says it simply, but it hits so hard.
The actors did a fantastic job in this film even Arnold, who is known for being restricted with his acting skills but he knocks it out of the park in this and the terminator films!

I always loved how Arnold never made the slightest effort to lose his thick accent when he got into movies. It's like some dude just stepped off the boat from Austria and now he's in the US military.

Countries in NATO can switch between countries services. I know a few guys from the U.S. go to the Canadian Army, and I from Polish Army went to the U.S. Army.

@tone loc Clean background, passport, usually an NCO or higher, be able to pass a countries basic laws (test), The countries willing to transfer troops over. If you aren't an officer you will start back over as a pvt usually, unless you are a higher ranking NCO. Officers usually start over as well - depends on the MOS they are wanting to transfer to. Ittakes awhile because the countries and paperwork have to be in order, and willing to accept it. Once you complete for example an 8 year contract with the U.S. Army, you can get citizenship. While you are in service, you can also apply for citizenship if you do not wish to wait that long. Also, while on duty you can reap the rewards of a citizen while in service.

It's pretty much an equivalent to a Company Commander in most cases, or a higher tier small unit within that organization. They expect much more from their officers, and NCOS in that area. E5 SGTs are just privates - not treated that way, but are similar in structure compared to regular units.

There is only a handful of movies I never get tired watching no matter how many times I've seen it. Predator is one of them. They don't make em like this anymore.

They should remake this movie but go back when they sent Jim Hopper and his crew. Jim Hopper is still alive and understands how the predator moves and tracing the predators footsteps and trying to catch up with Dutches Crew. There could be two or three of these predators around the jungle and Arnold only has killed one.

You ain’t afraid of no man!” The amount of tremble in his voice, you can tell how frightened he is that Billy is vocally admitting he is in fact scared, for what would be the first time in their many battles. The actor who played Poncho is great at describing all that through adding a great tremble, perhaps on the verge of bursting to tears.
Billy was just losing his cool, It was just a couple of guys running around out there.
He thinks Blane and Hopkins were killed by a fuckin lizard, it’s a bullshit psych job - fuckin lizard.

There’s something about this particular movie that’s so incredibly captivating. Even 30+ years later. The pacing, the music, the acting, the mystery/suspense of it all. This was pure gold that almost didn’t happen.
Expert writing & proper pacing is definitely something that is lost in new movies. Hell the newest movie “prey” felt like a high production fan film rather than a full blown studio experience.

That's cause back then groups of people tried to actually make a good movie. Today they just go franchise, popular actors, and CGI and music ok we don't need anything else just throw lots of jokes and funny scenes in and blow stuff up and have things get punched and trickle in some stupid Easter eggs and boom movie.

One thing that I just noticed after a million times watching this movie, did you notice that the 1st time seeing or hearing the Predator wasn't when Hawkins was killed? And I'm not talking about the views thru the Predator's heat vision. You hear the Predator , when Billy is about to discover the bodies of Jim Harper's crew hanging upside down, when he pushes thru the trees

Predator shouldn’t be as great as it is, but they did everything right on this film. It’s perfect. The writing, the special effects, the directing, the score, the story, the characters, casting, the planets aligned for this one.
Perfect is the word...everything lined up...so good.
That`s the heart of a cool director like John McTiernan. But his greatest film he made is Die Hard.
Also my favorite movie of all time.
I Still Think it was wrong to give too much glimpses of the predator in the middle, 1. when it treats its injuries (you shouldn't see its face) 2. When they "fail" the trap.

Take note that Billy is a seasoned combat special forces soldier; when asked the question the FIRST THING that comes out of his mouth is "im scared.." Billy senses something not like anything he has ever encountered and it really has him spooked; keep in mind he is around a group of muscle, macho, alpha men and he says he is scared....that is a level of confidence and surety you don't see too often.
opens with ''im scared'', ends with ''we're all gonna die'' and then still walks out like a badass fullfilling his duty. legend.

I always loved the fact that his 'I'm being watched' instinct wasn't like a magic light switch. He either couldn't sense the Predator, or couldn't pay attention to his insticts at first, because he was so focused on getting to the camp & then the battle.
Once it was over, and he 'broadened' his attention, he started noticing a presence. (one that he could not see) And that 'unnerved' feeling got stronger & stronger, until we get to this scene, where he outright admits his terror.
Pure gold, in a movie with excellent build up.

@@sharkdentures3247 His role description in Predator was actually "scout and tracker", so even if he wasn't a Native American, this still would've shown the skill level on which those commandos are operating. I mean, it's clear why they chose a Native American for that role, cause most people automatically associate them with tracking and hunting, so it was quiet credible that Billy did this stuff since he was a child and therefore was able to sense an invisible enemy stalking them.
To me, this scene here was one, if not the best of the whole movie. At first you see Mac, completely lost in thought, not only because he lost his best friend Blain, but also because of his encounter with the Predator. He is not sure of what he has seen there, he only knows that he is dealing with something that is actually impossible to his understanding and experience. Then you have Poncho, the fear in his voice was outstanding after interrogating their captive. It gets even better when he asks Billy. You instantly know that Poncho is not predominantly asking him to get information about the enemy, but rather because he expected a less dramatic response from him in order to calm himself down a little bit. This nervous half stuttered, half laughed "Bullshit", that came out of his mouth after Billy told him that he's scared, man, what a piece of art. This only highlights Billy's character even more, his honest assessment of the situation had a devestating effect on the group's morale. You can also see the trust Dutch puts in his group. To him, there's no doubt that what Mac and Billy told the others is a fact. He doesn't waste a second on thinking if Mac is just traumatized by Blain's death, no, he takes it for granted that there's something invisible stalking the jungle out there, capable of taking down his seasoned soldiers and surviving the barrage of a minigun.
It's small details like this that 2010's Predators was missing, that's why it's just a step in the right direction rather than something comparable to the first Predator movie.
We all love Arnold, Jesse Ventura, even Carl Weathers but Sonny Landham was one the best casting choices of this movie R.I.P Billy/Sonny

I love how mac says "Nothing on this planet could've survived that not at that range" one of my favourite lines in the whole movie basically insinuating that even if it was fast enough to get away it would've succumbed to the wounds from the bullets and yet nothing absolutely nothing
This really is the greatest action film ever made. I’ve watched it 100 times easy. The buildup. The plot. The suspense. No cgi of today can hold a candle to the talent this cast put together.
This is incredible. All their reactions are so well acted.
Dillon is in denial, Poncho is hysterical. The girl is depressed. Mack is bewildered. Billy is coming to terms with his mortality. And Dutch is trying to lean as much about his enemy as possible.
They are all very scared & it shows on screen.

Alan Silvestri's musical score perfectly sets the atmosphere of the movie. It takes you from a relaxing midnight calm to an all-out battle for life or death. A true masterpiece!

Do you know director McTiernan had security people protecting the entire cast and crew from Billy (Sonny Latham).
Mack knew the second he saw it that it wasn't human. His eyes give him away in this scene. He was scared shitless knowing and not knowing what was waiting for them. Brilliant acting.

When I was a kid I was ashamed to recognize that I loved this movie. I thought it was just a generic action film, I considered it a guilty pleasure and never understood why I liked it so much and why I thought it was a very good movie.
Now that I know a lot more about cinema, I can honestly say that I was wrong. It’s even better than I thought. It’s a masterpiece in direction, casting, scriptwriting, cinematography, soundtrack, a masterclass in how to build tension, and simply one of the best action films of the decade, and one of the best films of all time.
This movie just checks all the boxes and will be watched and studied for decades. It is, alongside Terminator 2, Matrix and Die Hard, the best action film of all time imo.
Don't forget the second Aliens movie. It's right up there with the best of them! 👍 Sigourney Weaver the greatest action heroine in film.

@@GM_- Agreed. Another masterpiece from Cameron, I love that movie. The action, the suspense, the perfect cast, the direction, top notch cinematography, excellent soundtrack by James Horner (RIP), great FX, and as iconic a film can get.
And most importantly, you cared about the characters, you were worried af the entire film (Hudson and Vasquez deaths still hurt). And the xenomorphs are just the cherry on the top.

Almost lost my sh*t when I first watched it when I was a kid, I thought I was going to watch fishes and stuff and first thing I see is a helpless girl getting killed by an unknown force and then a bloody human leg at the bottom of the sea. Wasn’t expecting any of that tbh (but was clearly welcomed).
Kinda same vibe with Predator (more horror than action. Or a perfect blend of both). One of a kind movie.

I remember going to a family reunion trip when I was 9 or 10 years old, the reunion took place on a huge houseboat on a lake that my grandfather had rented for the reunion. At the time I was really shy and didn’t feel like swimming with the rest of the family so I stayed in the living room of the house boat and went through the VHS tapes for something to watch while I ate a sub sandwich. Predator was one of those tapes, and I had seen it only once before, so I popped it into the VHS player and started watching it while sipping my juice and chowing down on my sandwich. Half an hour later, the entire family had wandered in for a snack or a drink and we were all glued to the tv, many of them watching Predator for the first time. I remember everyone just in awe at the thrill of the characters being hunted and no one knowing what to expect until the Predator was revealed and everyone was like “OH!!!!” It was an awesome evening, and after the film ended, we talked about how we could fight the Predator if one of them came after us.
My favorite action film of all time. For it to be the introduction to the Predator franchise, it hasn't been topped. It's nearly perfect.

It is not an action film even if it starts as one. Predator is a full-blown slasher-film and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Final Girl.
Too bad the follow-ups have all been shit shows.
@@artistryartistry7239 Predator 2 was decent, though certainly not near the equal of the original the way I've seen some its more diehard fans suggest. Predators also seems to be a bit overrated by some and was mediocre to me (and I just don't like Adrien Brody's fake tough guy act/voice). And "The Predator" is an abomination of filmmaking that deserves to be wiped from existence.
On a side note (since these aren't strictly Predator movies), I thought AVP was decent and gets too much hate for what it was. Requiem was complete garbage, though.
@@megavolt67 Everything after the first was a "product" rather than a passion project like the first. They did the first one because they really wanted to make that movie. All the rest were made because they wanted to make money, the passion and the creative inspiration was gone.
Billy acknowledged his fear and yet stood his ground to fight hand-to-hand against the invisible enemy knowing he had the fight lost to begin with. Brave as fuck.

That's how us Indians are, we're very brave but at this moment, Billy knew he wasn't gonna win this battle against something he never fought. We're also spiritual people, and Billy already knew before he saw the predator that he wasn't gonna win the fight.
This movie has a brilliant combination of everything; Backyard music, actors, story line, gunfire, Predator himself, intensity of action. It has got it all.
Thankfully, the Predator wasn't played by Mr. Van Damme /who was supposed to play the creature at the beginning of the filming process/, but by Mr. Kevin Peter Hall who stood around 2.18 meters height and gave the Predator that gigantic look.

They don’t make films like this no more
This scene right here never fails to give me chills, the communication between them all, they feel like real professional soldiers. They're all scared and you may think the one shitting the most bricks in this scene was Poncho because he comes off a bit hysterical but to me its actually Dillon who is the biggest sceptic of the group, throwing questions left and right about what they're up against and then shooting down their responses. When Billy says "we're all gonna die" Dillon immediately casts doubt instead of taking time to process what he just heard... "He's losing it, the man's losing his cool" and putting it all down to JUST a couple of guys running round the Jungle fucking with them, vocally in denial but deep down part of him knows Billy is right. Billy spoke his mind and excepted his fate with the calmest coolest demeanor possible, that's why he faces The Predator head on on that log bridge later on, he didn't want to die running in fear, he wanted to go down fighting with dignity, his way.
Just a total badass character and I'd like to think he got a few good licks in against The Predator before it got him... RIP Sonny 💪
Hence, the Predator not only takes his skull, but he in fact takes his spine along with the skull. Something I took note of watching Predator 2. If the fight was easy or okay, the Predator would skin the prey. If the prey gave a good fight, but still went down relatively easy he took a skull. Finally, if the prey went all out and the Predator considered the fight to be good or honorable he took a skull and spine with it. Billy must have had a great fight to have his spine and skull ripped out and polished.
One of the most rewatchable films of all time.
Schwarzenegger, Duke, Landham, Weathers... what a cast. What a movie.
Props to Richard Chaves acting and just ratcheting up the tension. Such a small scene but the way his voice cracks- “Bullshit, you ain’t afraid of no man..” was simply brilliant acting. Billy gets a lot of props for being the “toughest” guy in the squad but the fact is all of Dutch’s team are certified bad ass, probably Delta or former Delta. Poncho was a legit pipe-hitter.
Same with Jesse Ventura. Navy Seals. Ponco in real life was an Army Vet. Stellar stuff

This film is no mere “testosterone mindless shooting” action. Yes it has lots of that, and does it very good, but its much deeper than that. Its the constant terror that it puts in your head, not knowing what the hell is out there hunting these experienced hard ass soldiers one by one. Truly one of the best sci fi horror movies of all time that well deserves its horror title.
There’s a lotta that at the start but it gets stripped away when they start getting slaughtered
The shooting established how badass Dutch's squad is until they get picked off one by one by an inhuman monster. It's the absolute best way to set up how big of a threat the Predator is.
The predator had rules of battle... it would only take down someone with ranged weapons if they held a range weapon.... it would only take down someone with a melee weapon if they had a melee weapon. Much more respect as compared to human hunters which take down defenseless animals with ranged weapons for sport.

The moment where Billy says "I'm scared Poncho", then the music changes, is one of my favorite movie moments in the history of cinema...

Man, the look on Poncho's face at 2:18 pretty much sums up the intense fear of the reality that they are really starting to realise they are in. Very disturbing, seemingly unexplainable things going on, and their incredible vulnerability is really now apparent. Fighting against a superior unknown thing, very precarious situation to be in. It's hard enough and terrifying enough as it is fighting what you know, nevermind what you don't know.
I've watch this movie more than 50 time's and I can't get tired of watching it.

The fear of unknown gradually mounts in us while watching this great movie! Almost all of us would've seen this cult classic sci-fi thriller. The director, musician, Arnie and locations...all are perfect!

Oh my god! I watched this when I was like 7 or 8. My elder cousins convinced me that the predator is real and could be right outside my room, on the tree. This scared the crap out of me and even to this day, I cannot watch this movie alone. !!! What a great movie!

i love how this movie isnt afraid to take moments of pause, and build tension, atmosphere and character.
All with minimal dialogue. There are long stretches in this film where no dialogue is even necessary to know what’s happening. I think that’s what helps make it so immersive
The best part of this scene is when Poncho asks Billy: “You know something, what is it ?” As he relizes Billy is the only Native American among the squad who may know better the deep secrets of this land when everybody else has no clue of what’s going on.
And the scariest part when Billy did really know better and answers: “I’m scared”, which is a straightforward answer.
The psychology of this movie is so powerful.

The Hopper idea is very good. Or Show us Dutch now. All you need is Arnold and maybe the woman. Make it current times and put them with a new unit thats hunting a Predator. Kind of as advisors, like Ripley in Aliens, and they end up fighting it.

I’d like to think the reason why Billy was scared in this scene was because he has heard the stories and legends of an invisible killer from his past ancestors.
He’s of Native American descent so him being superstitious of the whole environment makes it all the more sense. And when Pancho asks him he knows something,, it because he does know one thing, he knows that the creature is not human, his whole team isn’t going to survive cuz of what the predator is capable of. that’s why he’s accepting his fate that he won’t make it and put up a fight against the creature that has hunted his people and humanity for centuries. I’m glad that in the new predator movie coming out this year will go into depth of the Native American culture, I just hope they won’t ruin it…

For my money, this is the best scene in the film. It doesn't have the Predator or even any action in it. Brilliantly evoked sense of peril.
There are so many great scenes in this movie. McTiernan really took the story seriously.
After watching Prey, I wonder if Billy's ancestors are the Comanche tribe.
I like how the score kicks in when Mack appears to bring the bad news and it just tickles the scene with each actor showing their current emotional state. Brilliant movie making.

I love the respect Poncho has for Billy asking him cause he knows he isn't afraid of things and looking for his Guidance only to be semi shocked when he says he is afraid.

Jesse Ventura and Richard Chaves were actually Vietnam Vets. This movie still kicks asses even without CGI stuff and overacted characters of nowadays.
Ventura actually missed combat duty as a UDT when he was stationed in Subic Bay NavSta, that’s why he never claimed to be a Vietnam Vet.
Especially without CGI stuff.
That assault on the compound had real explosions, people on fire, squibs exploding.
The stunt team who worked on the A-Team did that, and crammed a whole movie’s action into that scene cos the remainder of the film turns into a slasher, horror sci-fi

Most natives either North or Central o South América know very well their own landscapes and country sides.. I met many of them and they can survive inside with no supplies.. even my grand father learned that because he used to live close to the natives. He got a farm near to a little village of natives
Billy fears no man, no animal. But what he senses is not from Earth. He couldn't adapt like Dutch probably because his beliefs made him think it was a demon rather than another mortal biological organism.

NOT in what is suppose to be a horror thriller. Imagine if this scene ended with someone making a wise-crack or joke. It would have killed all the tension that was build.
