Hi Mandy, Court dress code, and in particular legal wigs, is a tradition that goes back 700 years. It all started with King Edward III in the 14th Century. In addition to robes, judges have generally worn a short bench wig when working in court (reserving the long wig for ceremonial occasions)

Sweet shops would have been a big thing in UK several decades back, but have reduced drastically in numbers.
Most towns (near me at least) don't have a dedicated sweet shop. Sweets would be commonly bought now in supermarkets or newsagents.

I had always misinterpreted the "in time" to be a physics reference abt a stitch in the fabric of time and space, and could never grasp where 9 fits in. 24:22 Five episodes in and you're already beginning to take part in the show. Quite a shift from the first one where it was just bullying (It isn't, Ricky is the weird one here tbh) Can't wait for the next one!
Karl just might be a genius but he doesn't apply himself to learning anything and would rather let his imagination take over. A creative genius more than a scientific one. Pretty much all the stuff he talks about is true. At least the headline is. They talked about this on XFM back in the day that he just reads the headline of a story and after that his imagination takes over and makes up the details. He's not stupid. Just different.<
You should check out "Living with Ricky Gervais" which is all personal footage from "backstage". It would give you more context to the dynamic between him and the people he spends time with. The man is a certifiable lunatic. I love his work, the stand-ups, Golden Globe roasts and TV/movie work, but I wouldn't last 5 minutes as his friend. All those laughs and mood changes you can see here.... Amplify that by 100 and that's him irl. This isn't him being extra giddy for our entertainment, this is Ricky holding back the insanity!

Judges still wear wigs, I think the tradition was born due to flagrant syphilis in the renaissance period, everyone would lose their hair, so it became a fashion statement to have an expensive fancy wig, the nobility made it a whole thing and so noble professions such as judges and magistrates continued the trend and part of their professional routine. I'm either talking absolute shite there or it's true 🤷🏻‍♂️ but I remember hearing that somewhere 🤔 may have even been on the xfm show 😂

Judges and barristers wear wigs in British court. Its traditional since late 1600s. Its about being formal and smart. Showing class. Wig wearing was very popular at the time amongst royalty and aristocrats. Though outside the court I think it was also done to prevent headlice. Wouldn't be good for rich people to be scratching their heads all the time at some fancy dinner or whatever

Judges in court wear wigs but its like 18th century style, don’t know why but i guess it just traditional that never died out
You probably know this- The 3 had worked together on a london radio station, ricky and Steve had a show and Karl was their producer and made short appearances on the show but Ricky loved his thoughts etc as it was hilarious. Audiences started loving him too so karl started to become a part of their show.

The wig thing can be traced back to Louis XIV of France who wore a wig to hide is balding, which was associated with being a symptom of syphilis so was derided. The elite classes of Europe followed suit and wore wigs also, back when courts were basically King’s Courts.
Judges and Barristers still wear the formal dress, as it’s seen as a separation between the law and the human enforcing it, though it is entirely symbolic. Judges often choose not to wear formal dress in cases where they don’t want to create an intimidating environment (such as when dealing with children).
It’s just a throw back to ancient times, no more than ceremonial dress from other cultures.

Judges have always wore those wigs, for many centuries (in much of the developed world at least); In the same way any public servant would wear a uniform, they are representations of an institution, and are to be seen as such.

They still wear wigs and not just the judges, Barristers (criminal lawyers) also wear smaller ones. This is a case where Karl is almost right, it does give a certain anonymity, it's to de-personalise the proceedings and judges without wigs (in there own clothes) look so different you'd hardly believe it was the same person.

In the UK high courts the judge wears wigs, I have no idea why, have never cared about it, I believe the top lawyers also wear wigs, why was because of fashion during the 17th century, it probably continued just because that's what they did. Although they would claim its respect of power and the law, but they are just kids that like dress up.

At the time of recording? I mean how old do you think these shows are Mandy? lol Yeah as others have already said, British judges have worn white wigs for 100's of years, and yes it's still going on.
Also, the thing about Karl is he doesn't really understand metaphors or analogies. He also has a hard time understanding progress in time, or the progress of society. So he thinks people lived pretty much the same and had the same sort of wants and needs 500 years ago as today. He also likes to anthropomorphize all animals even insects, like his tendanycy to think they have jobs and some of them are lazy and don't do enough work etc. This is why sometimes he seems childish, it's the same sort of realisation level as young childern.
OHH by the way, one of the hidden gems of this show (and quite rare) are Steve's stories, watch out for them, his actually a great anecdote teller. So make sure you carry on till the end.

The British by living on top of each other have more complex characters, simply far more to draw from. This show keeps saying "midget" on various episodes, but the politically correct term now is "dwarf."
Since so many of us have never seen a homeless Chinese person, that's a reason to celebrate, because most likely most of then are housed since we never saw them homeless. And, the Los Angeles homeless situation is getting worse and worse and worse, and it's been in news and on TH-cam that it's getting worse. Really, in too many places, but especially in Los Angeles. Lack of affordable housing, they say.

You ruin it for yourself a little bit when you watch the cartoons first imho. The podcasts in their original form are much better because you get the full context, e.g. the build up to the 'kick a duck up the arse' bit, it just seems to come out of nowhere more than on the tv show.
The podcasts are a nice start to get acquainted with the trio. Then afterwards, listen to the old XFM radio shows and see how Karl went from not saying much at all to making up the whole show with his own features like Rockbusters and Educating Ricky. Btw, the very first 2 episodes of that radio show are lost forever.
