The Sandscorcher is all that is best about Tamiya how can it not bring a smile to people's faces. Just the box alone is something to behold. Defiantly agree with painting the tyres brings them out so much they come to life. I've built a re release myself a few years back
put a navigator next to the driver with a custom made map plus other mods. There's no end to how you can personalise this model so glad you've one. They're fun to build to,👍👍

Hi there. I’m the builder of this. I’m glad you are having a good time with this. It’s part original and part rere and part custom. The front shocks are old man emu from Rc4wd. And the rear shocks are double sprung dromida 1/18 upgrade shocks. The stickers are from a toy vw bus I got at winners. The steering is a mod I did on my own rere scorcher. When I was building it the front piece broke trying to put the metal ring on. In hindsight this is much better than sticky taping the servo Down. The rims are from China I found them on eBay. They, like the tires are meant for a fast attack. This was a complete disaster when I got it, was missing parts and things were broken so this is why it’s a sort of hodge podge of stuff. If you need anything else just ask me.

Great memories. I am thinking of building yet a Third Sand Scorcher. My first was given to me from Santa at Christmas 1979. That one I copied the artwork on the box (I was 15). My Second was sand colored and built in 2011. My new one will be a love bug hippy ride. The only thing is, that in the states we put our license plate registration on the Back plates. Some states may allow the use of one plate on vehicle .... with reg on back plate. I may put mine on like you did because in the 70's hippies appeared dumb / stupid...cause we were all High!!
    Great work

This is worth every penny, I'm building the re release, test drove it, and what a great fun car .Used a brushless 3600 kv on 3s because I don't have a battery that fits. I love this beast ,now I know why people will always love this . Great video mate.

My first model in early 1980's loved that kit. fully water proofed - (bath tested!) - cut the chassis and body and made a short wheel version a la the willys jeep - great quality and engineering - buying my 13 year old son one someday soon (maybe 2 ;). great work on the videos.

I had the original Sand Scorcher as as teenager.
I had a blast with this thing. Gave it to a neighborhood kid when I left for the Navy in '84.

What a great take on the Sand Scorcher.
    Very 60s looking bug.
I like the Rough Rider tires on it too.
Steering mod is what racers did BITD, or a version of it as we mostly removed the waterproof box altogether.

That’s an awesome unit. Love what the original owner added, the love bug theme. The servo mounted head and working lights and indicators just add to the character.
I’ll be doing some searching for probably a re-re myself, because they don’t build them like that anymore! The “BAJA” (pronounced baa haa) theme on the original is pretty plain but it’s also appealing in a way. Keep up the good work!👍🇦🇺🤓

Nice bug ! Front FAV / Rough Rider wheels and tyres are different diameter to Sand Scorcher fronts though, they did do an aftermarket diff. back in the day but are like rocking horse poo now. Would run it on gravel / loose dirt first as dead easy to roll with solid rear axle - would be a shame to damage that awsome paint work.

The Sand Scorcher was my very first RC car and I ordered it from Tower Hobbies just after it was released. I'm with you on the tire writing. I started doing the lettering with my Kyosho Mid restorations and, for me, it just makes all the difference. Looks cool running as well. You should do a running video at the beach on the sand and at sunset - and maybe in slo-mo. That would be epic!

The wheels look fantastic, particularly with the yellow lettering. And the indicators & moving head give it so much character. But from a running perspective, think I'd personally restrict to gentle tarmac use. It's far too nice to risk damaging.

Thanks for info on tires painting. Gonna do that on my 1980 SS. I also prefere the RR tires they look more realistic. To me the triangle plate on the chassis is original when compared to mine. My main concern is the flexibility of the chassis (fiber glass + reinforcement triangle) that doesn't fit the excellent back and front shock absorbers. I love the lights and I'll put some leds but will try to make then a bit more yellow as front lights useto be in the 80s.

Great find, looks amazing your car. The direct servo conversion is briliant, the original is supposed to be verry bad. The radio box is meant to wobble, it is fixed on rubber sockets to give the electronics a save place. The differential is #84113 i think out of stock for some years now. I heared it is also loosening itself after 2 battery packs, so not verry useful anyway. I was hoping some manufacturer starts building an aftermarket one for the rereleased SRBs, but not that i know of yet. I think Thorpe made a diff too, but harder to find than the Tamiya one.

  • @rcdan

Regarding the indicator not working in one direction, I believe I had a similsr problem years ago. Not sure if I remember correctly, but I believe it could be that the servo isn't quite centered mechanically and adjusted with the trim to correct. Try the trim in the middle on the TX and center the servo saver on the horn manually. But don't take my word for it... Was agaes ago 🙈🤪

Loving it man!! This was the first RC car that caught my eye way back in about 1980. I got to know a guy who had one when I spotted him at a local beach, messing about with it in the sand. With the paddle tires it went around pretty well, most of the time. I loved the proper details like the metal suspension parts, and appreciated the water-proof enclosure for the electrics. I've never owned one, so maybe now is the time!
Heh, I was just checking around, and the driver figure has to have his crash helmet on, otherwise he looks like a lobotomy patient with no top to his head!!!!. But really, I was going to say that for this custom "hippie" version, he could really do without the skid lid and have long hair or an afro instead. Or better still be replaced by girl in a bikini!!! 😋

haha this is great. Is there a way you can wire the lights to turn on from the radio? I have a Tamiya Tundra with the MFC-02 kit & the LED's are controlled by the radio. I don't know if you can mod an MFC 02 unit to work with this but couldn't hurt I guess. Still, looks amazing.

I bought one of these with my first months wage packet n 78. Loved mine to bits until I joined the RAF came home on leave and my father had taken it and all my modelling bits and bobs down the local tip. When I see how much originals go for now it breaks my heart. I no the reg number spells baja bug but it’s pronounced Baha bug as it’s a copy of the Californian beach racer on BaHa beach I think anyway thought you’re one looks cool one thing I’d definitely change is the tyres rear paddles and front rails take it through puddles and sea the plume of water fly up from the paddle tyres awesome and totally safe as the box keeps everything dry. I’ve been looking to get another one but there so expensive now. Been looking at the Porsche 911 on the tt01e chassis but have seen three different 4x4 drives... one belt, two belt or one metal drive shaft don’t know which is the better one to get and also they all come with the clunky speed controller was wondering which esc I should put in it ??? Any thought or tips/help would be greatly received 😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      Hey buddy
I believe all the TT-01 - 02 range comes with the Tamiya TBLE02S ESC, there ok tbh. They run up to a 23t brushed motor or 10.5t brushless but you would need to buy the fan if you go that option👊🏻

    • @kennethcampbell1962
      @kennethcampbell1962 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

TAMIYA Legends thanks for speedy reply, I’ll have a better look at kits see if they are fitted with esc but am sure there the old style. What about the different 4x4 drive systems one belt drive, two belt drives or the metal drive shaft I’ve absolutely no idea which is best or the advantages or disadvantages of each system. I suppose longevity the drive shaft wins but are the belt driven ones better in other ways ? I know the belts are easily available and fairly cheap as are the drive shafts just would like to know the differences in each type. Anyway again thanks for answering, keep up the great work your doing and don’t change anything about how you do things... as old saying goes why change if it ain’t broke 😁👍🏻 magic, you can tell your passionate about this hobby and you can’t fake that 😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 well done sir, well done indeed 😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
