Love your build videos! I couldn't figure out how to use the well nuts to attach the electronics box till I watched your Rough Rider and Sand Scorcher videos. I owe you a coffee! I'm building my first Sand Scorcher that I bought from EuroRC! Fantastic service to the US!
This took me back to some great memories of my own sand scorcher build as an 11 year old kid building my first rc car . I set everything out on my mum's dining room table , put some newspaper down for any spillages and used her vegetable cutting board to cut on . Loving the build and Loving the trip down memory lane. Thank you so much mate 😃👍
I love the scorcher. The rubber radio box mounts are called well nuts. My motorbike uses the exact same method to fit the side fairing together on the underside!
Cool vid! Yes the SRB is one of the best kits out there, even all these years later. I recall buying all three versions brand new when they first came out, as well as multiple body kits, tire kits, heavy duty steel u-joints, with the addition of double and triple shocks, as each of them all took a beating way back then. If I'd only known they would be worth what they are now, I would have bought more and left them in storage. There were no after market mod suppliers when they first came out, had to chase down our own springs for coil-overs as well as smaller springs to go around the piston of the shock. That and wiring our own light kits, it's a good thing our high school had a machine shop class to make parts, as we were constantly making outrageous mods for the suspension system. So many good times. 😎😎
I didn't watch any builds on this till yours and im glad I did. Looked like fun to me. Im willing to build mine now and its been years ive had it with lots of extras. Just it still looks so nice in the box. I just dont want to mess with it. Cant wait to see you run it. Thanks Glenn!
Really like when you do the builds on video. I enjoyed it almost as much as building it. Takes me back to the days when these were new.i had all the old models too before radios . They had wired remotes lol.
I love it! This was my very first surface RC purchased from Tower Hobbies in the winter of '79-'80. I'm very happy Tamiya has kept the updates to a minimum so current and future generations can enjoy the experience of building a true classic the way it was originally designed. As it happens, I'm currently painting a Sand Scorcher body in box-art colors and it definitely is a challenge. The build is posted on TC if you're interested. Anyway, just take your time Glenn and you will be pleased with the results. Great video, thanks again for what you do!!
Ahh memories.. I had the Rough Rider and Super Champ.. loved them. Back in the days parts were pricy for these and the front trailing arms shafts were not the strongest.. I remember my dad making me replacements in CrMo for me at his shop
I have always loved the Sand Scorcher. I have an original built but loved to presentation of the box so much that I just picked up a rere just to display the blister pack kit.
Fantastic video Glenn bring back memories back in the day when they first came out and I got one as a Christmas present and it was so enjoyable to build back then, and I'd love be to have that feeling again as today's kits aren't the same ,so I think I need to add a Sand Scorcher to my collection ,but this time not drive it like a mad man . looking forward to the rest of the build
Love it Glen.. I’m old enough to remember the original!!. I think I’ve said it before it was a very daunting kit at my age back then.. so many metal parts.. I never had that chassis I just never felt I would be able to do it!!!. That’s why I think Re-Re’s are such a good thing…
I'm about to pull the trigger myself, after years of almost nothing. I remember the first time I saw this scorcher. It was love at first sight, and despite me getting involved in all kinds of kit building and running sessions, I never got one. This video is a sign from above 😁😁😁. Keep the fun mate!🤘. I really enjoyed this vidéo. I'm quite interested in looking for the next ones. Instant sub!
I had the original when I was younger and actually painted the body with a brush, it's all I had back then. Now I'm older and with the new Scorcher I spray painted it but it's still not easy to do. Good masking is key to a perfect paint job.
I love that car. I've built one last year..and sold it on...😳 But I was lucky enough to get my hands on an original one. Needs restoring though...but that's what I love to do. Awesome car, awesome built. 👍❤
Remember having 3 of these when I was younger when I just got into the big boys game of rc . The sand scorchers loved the beaches at Newquay and was totally waterproof , spent many an hour cleaning after a day out , the originals has brass universal joints that went onto the driveshafts but I found they use to wear really quickly , I put a 540 black s motor in it and it went like hell . Maybe time to get another one or a blitzer beetle as I still have a few old school tamiyas here . Mad bulls , midnight pumpkin and hornets , the sand scorchers I had ended up in demolition Darby at the end , if I only knew then how much they are worth now . But they was definitely bashed and played with
Awesome Kit for sure , i do want to build mine but it looks so cool in the Blister Packs as well so i will have to get my anxiety meds out when come to break open the packs he he but overall what a kit honestly for the age of the concept its an awesome design from Tamiya and just watching the Beach running videos back in the day in the hobby stores was super cool too, thanks Glenn for a great Build Video so far cheers budd.
The sand scorcher is so cool. Real vw style suspension and proper Baja Bug look. We’re getting a holiday buggy from our friend the RC elf. I’m thinking a sand scorcher or blitzed beetle body may be in its future 😁 another great video my friend
Once again thank you for a great video of another kit I always wanted as a kid As of now would love to have that body on a scale crawler rig seen a couple looks so cool Thanks again!👍
Hi Glenn! Another Great Build! - I'll Never get bored with SRB chassis, lot's of nostalgia :) I think it's worth mentioning what a subtle but massive upgrade Tamiya did on the front end- compared to the mki/mkii, much stronger but looks just as cool! not long finished my Re-Re chassis, loving it, - my current mission is to find a decent and narrow enough coil- over shock alternative for the kit ... I've always struggled with the springing & dampening on this car, love to know what anyone else has done?
Beautiful build Glenn. Love seeing all the oldskool style cast moulds. Still yet to get one myself but its on the list for one day! Ive heard the paint job isnt too easy for boxart which scares me abit!
Thank you Glenn for the great build video. I now think that the building experience and appreciation of pieces is a very important part of owning this kit. Mind blowing. ❤️
I like how Tamiya kept the original theme.... of leaky dampers - a nice nod to the original :) Mine is just a shelf queen but the oil ran away long ago.....
Nice Glenn its such an iconic tamiya! Awesome car! I have a slightly tatty Mk1 that's definitely my favourite in my collection! Its special to me for sure! Such a legendary car! Everyone has to experience building a SRB! Original or rere! Great vid buddy and good luck with that boxart paint job😉
Well I've got to say Glenn some of the older tamiyas were too old for my taste, but after seeing this build my mind has been changed, this chassis looks fantastic,I can't believe the quality of it,all those lovely metal parts,it's a work of art.Good luck with the body mate I know you'll make a fantastic job of it as always 👍 👊
G'day Glenn beautiful kit mate the shock's don't leak for long lol And the low gearing is a bit better because it's bloody heavy car built you will see mate. When I drove my Superbuggy champ only put one battery through it tall gear was to tall traction rolled on the road nooooo low gear was spot on more bottom end and revved out top better. Great build good stuff mate 👍👍
It truly was a challemge to keep these going as soon as other, newer tamiyas came on the market. Hunting down hobby shops far and wide, always pushing the word your looking to buy any srb car or parts anyone had. Occasionally one would find some part at a hobbyshop, that was an old "upgrade", which was completely unrelated to the wear parts one were looking to replace, and getting that instead of the real fix. A knackered parts car kept mine going for a few more years, but eventually I saved up for the Fox, and never looked back. Performance with technigold was on another level entirely.
Great work Glenn. I was given by a mate back in 1988-ish a box full of car parts. I actually managed, without manuals to sort them out and put the chassis together. One was a Kyosho Assault/Scorpion thing, which is now a running chassis all these years later. The other was an SRB chassis Super Champ. I don't want to admit how many parts were replaced on both while restoring them, here's a clue, it was borderline pointless. Anyway, The SRB chassis is all together, has been for a couple years actually. It's a kind of bastardized Super Champ that I've modded to fit an SS body to it. The only thing holding me back is attempting to paint the body box art! It just seems really hard and easy to stuf up. (btw, both chassis sat around in bits in a box for something like 30 years?) Looking forward to the next vid :)
Awesome job Glenn. I still wonder why torsion bars aren’t the preferred option for cars/trucks over coil springs although I guess I do prefer the way coils look 🤷♂️ Super neat kit either way!
I am looking forward to building mine. Would it be a problem fitting a not too wild brushless motor for some additional speed? I will probably mostly drive it on the smooth gravel road here at home. And some straight line speed is fun.
I bought an original Rough Rider back in 1980, complete with mechanical speed control. It was awesome, I regret selling this car, I have been trying to find an (affordable) replacement ever since. Excellent thanks for watching my friend 😊👊🏻
I love how tamiya actually does the suspension like the real cars. This is actually a scale model , not just their own design with a body slapped on.
Yeah you really get the feeling you’re building something pretty cool all the way through the build 😊😊😊
Same. The engineering of different suspension and working parts is why I collect them. Its not about the performance, its about the build.
Love it.
This took me back to some great memories of my own sand scorcher build as an 11 year old kid building my first rc car . The old SRB chassis cars just beg to be taken to the beach
Thank you Glenn 🤩
Yeah I’ll have to see if I can get this running at the Beach 🤩🤩🤩
Love these old SRB cars.. always wanted one. Can’t believe I was only 7 when these came out.. great to see this detailed build Glenn love it
Excellent I’m glad you liked the video Pete 😊👊🏻
Nice build Glen. Regarding the shocks, I replaced the red o-rings with white trf ones and none have leaked in over 2 years.
Fantastic thanks Graeme 🤩👊🏻
Gonna try that the next time I rebuild my CVAs. The red ones leak too much and mine is mostly a shelf queen.
I love the scorcher. The rubber radio box mounts are called well nuts. My motorbike uses the exact same method to fit the side fairing together on the underside!
Nice one Shaun 😊👊🏻
Sand scorcher chassis is probably my favourite build. It’s simple and clever and just so unique. Very enjoyable to watch. Thanks Glenn.
