Just tested my new BC30R out on the road at 2 am here in northern Virginia. It is fantastic, and so much more compact than the old halogen systems I used to use way back when before the advent of LED lights. The much longer running times is a bonus too. While this light may not be the best choice for off-road riders, for on-road and commuter use it is perfect.

+trekkeruss Why would this light not be good for off-road riders? Do you recommend another product for off-road?

+Lionel Johnston it's great on and off road. It's just that the remote switch is geared more to road riders. Allowing you to flash on coming traffic.

+The Brighter Cyclist I see thanks. I have the PD35 which is awesome and now I am looking at bike options. www.fenixtactical.com/fenix-pd35-tac.html Cheers.

+Lionel Johnston The only reason it's not great for off-road is because of the remote switch interface. You physically have to press and hold the button for the turbo boost; once you let go of the button, the boost shuts off.

Nice demo on the interface, I was kinda curious about that aspect of it. Already owning the older BC30 (powered by two 18650 batteries inside a battery compartment) I see little reason to buy this one.
I suspect I probably would've gone for this one now if the choice was between the BC30 and this one almost identical except for the UI tweaks and power source and slightly altered output levels.
I'm not always a fan of devices which don't allow you to replace the batteries though, I would have preferred a setup where you can put your own 18650 batteries inside and charge them internally but I can understand why Fenix went with this design and it should last enough charging cycles to make it a worthwhile purchase.

You did a very good review and put together a great video of the review. I actually ordered this light after watching your review. I also subscribed to your channel to see what else you are doing. Keep up the fantastic work!

No problem. As much as I like the Fenix BC30R I also have 2 other lights on my bike. I use the JETBeam ST Cycler for backup and a Olight M3X Triton for distance. I have a serious collection of flashlights and the Olight Triton is my favorite for walks at night and whenever I need to see at a distance. I will make a video in the future when I am not so busy. You should subscribe to my videos and you will see the video when I make it. I'm riding a Specialized Turbo Levo which is a great ebike and it deserves a great lighting system.

Hi, can the light be used while charging? I have urban night rides that sometimes might take up to 3hrs so I was wondering if I can plug a portable power bank to it while the light is on? Lets say a 10,000mah power bank? thanks!

Late reply, but yes, it can be used while charging, though only on the lowest setting.

Get the cheaper bc30 with replaceable 18650s and carry spare batteries when you ride

Hello The Brighter Cyclist. I have a question for you: i'm a Cross Country cyclist and i'm looking for one good light to my bike (i'm willing to pay up to 120€). What do you recommend? Thank you for your great vids. Cheers! P.S. - I live in Portugal.

How is this light, specifically the attachment to the bar in rough mountain biking? I heard that it does not handle mountain biking very well and it falls off.

    • @ThespankedoneRidesReviews

It's a very solid mount that won't fall off on the trail

is this rechargeable only through USB or does it take 2 18650 batteries? I prefer the batteries.

+Lorenzo Cordero Hi there, you can only charge it via USB. I hope that helps

Hi Jason, not that I've noticed. But I do tend to use more modern gps trackers.

I'm trying to decide between this light and the similar BC30. My thoughts so far...
If the rechargeable batteries in the BC30R die it might not be possible to replace them. At best it might require disassembling the unit and resoldering connections. With the similar BC30 this is easy because it uses OTC batteries. But when you add in the cost of batteries and charger the two lights end up costing almost the same.
Any thoughts on these two lights would be welcome. Thanks.

Hi. I would go for the bc30R the added runtime screen is fantastic. Fenix lights are very reliable, we have several riders using them in my local mountain bike group. I don't think you need to worry about the batteries either. When they do finally fail the light should be old enough to justify a brighter newer replacement in a few years time.
Or buy the bc30 if you would like to carry spare batteries to extend the runtime or would like more output.

+Ewie M Some time ago I had to do the same choice and it was BC30 cause it's more suitable to have a possibility to change rapidly the batteries during the long trips and another reason - Fenix CL25 (a light I use in camping) have the same kind of batteries. So for me the BC30 is more convenient. My Fenix CL25 I use instead of a common battery charger.
