I had a gourmet coffee shop near me that did this. The 2lb bag of coffee was 2.5x's the price of the 1lb bag of coffee. So not only did you save money by buying the smaller bags, but you also could keep one bag sealed until you needed it and you could get two different flavors. I tried to explain this to the owner ( think man-bun) and he legitimately thought I was trying to confuse him and rip him off.
They sometimes do this on purpose. The price for the small bag is the price they want, and the other one has a markup. You go in for 1 small bag, but since you think you're getting a great deal, you'll get 2 small ones and think you saved some money. For people wanting to get the bigger one, they just make the same ammount, but for people coming in to buy 1 small, they'll actually make an extra sale. This is similar to when you get a discount for bigger quantities, except the other way around. The point is you feel like you've played them/the system.
I worked at walmart that had something like this going, I told them that it's cheaper to buy the smaller version and the managers didn't care, because the smaller version had a special going on while the larger one didn't. This was a non-perishable btw.

Considering that the USB itself is on sale, 1 for 20 means the original price is higher than 20. Two for 50 means they want to discourage more than 2 per order, but still might be cheaper than the original price. For instance if #1 and #2 are in different packaging, it would make sense.
I have seen actual specials like this. I went into a shop to buy detergent. And 1 bottle was like 6.95. So i thought cool and I grabbed one and then I noticed that there's a specials Island sort of things where there's apparently a bunch of items under special offer banner in which every item is a pack of 2 or 3 items and I find the same detergent I picked but this time it was 2 of them taped together and the price was like 14.95. I am good with numbers so I immediately caught that and went to check out with the one bottle. And the cashier was like 'hey why don't you grab the same brand from the specials, it's a good deal.' And I'm like are you serious, that thing at the specials cost more than buying two of them separately, is the additional cost the tape? I don't if she was pretending but she acted like that is a mistake from the office and she called the manager to notify him of the error so they can redo the pricing of the specials package. Later that day I went back to the shop to grab something else ( the shop is like 200mts from my home) and out of curiosity I decided to check detergent and found that the price of specials is still 14.95 but the section where the individual bottles used to be is now empty and they removed the price tag from there.

@@HProtagVtuber There are two types of bundles, one is "bundle" and another "package". Bundle is automatically maintained by Steam, it has adjusted prices for discounts and thing you own. Packages are maintained by developers, they have a fixed price - developer can set any price irrelevant to products included. This usually happens when game is on sale, but developer doesn't update package price so it stays without sale (so usually more expensive).

I actually worked at a tech store and ran into this problem because of decimal point taxes. The customer figured out the math and so I had to sell 10 keychains as single transaction each. When the store policy for employees was to encourage multiple transactions sales, that really messed with my numbers that week

The final product always costs more than the components. If that weren't true, businesses couldn't earn a dime. They would just buy 10$ worth of components to sell you 10$ worth of product, staying at a balance of 0$.

In the US, large supermarket chains will often have their prices "market adjusted" to account for the demographics of the area they serve. Prices on the same product will differ store to store. BUT, sales are chain-wide. This has led to my local store frequently having a 2 for $1 sale on an item that is normally 49 cents.
Walmart does a lot of this. The "Bonus Twin Pack!" tends to be a little more expensive than just buying 2 single items.

I've done more years in retail than I'd like to admit, some of those bonus items stay over after xmas and similar seasons and then the headoffice turns up the price for no reason, and that goes for anything from detergents to slabs of beer... I recall wasting 2000 euros of beer just because it expired cause it was cheaper to buy 24 single cans than a 24 multipack and we were not allowed to reduce alco prices... I had to spill it all into the sewer... After 4 hours of spilling beer, the vapour alone is enough to get you drunk lol

Considering that the USB itself is on sale, 1 for 20 means the original price is higher than 20.
Two for 50 means they want to discourage more than 2 per order, but still might be cheaper than the original price.
For instance if #1 and #2 are in different packaging, it would make sense.

I have seen actual specials like this. I went into a shop to buy detergent. And 1 bottle was like 6.95. So i thought cool and I grabbed one and then I noticed that there's a specials Island sort of things where there's apparently a bunch of items under special offer banner in which every item is a pack of 2 or 3 items and I find the same detergent I picked but this time it was 2 of them taped together and the price was like 14.95. I am good with numbers so I immediately caught that and went to check out with the one bottle. And the cashier was like 'hey why don't you grab the same brand from the specials, it's a good deal.' And I'm like are you serious, that thing at the specials cost more than buying two of them separately, is the additional cost the tape? I don't if she was pretending but she acted like that is a mistake from the office and she called the manager to notify him of the error so they can redo the pricing of the specials package. Later that day I went back to the shop to grab something else ( the shop is like 200mts from my home) and out of curiosity I decided to check detergent and found that the price of specials is still 14.95 but the section where the individual bottles used to be is now empty and they removed the price tag from there.

I actually had a similar experience at Best Buy. They scanned my game and it showed 54.99. She then asked if I wanted the free steel book. I agreed and she scanned that but the game changed price to 59.99. I pointed it out, and her nor her manager could understand why I was upset. The manager actually told me the game price changed because the steel case was free, but it was only free if I bought the game. If I bought it by itself it was $5.

I found out that while 400CP was 2500, 800CP was actually 5500; So it was better to get 2 400CPs for 5k, and you'd save 500; it was especially funny because CODM always put the % of savings you'd get if you bought higher CPs at once, and here's me literally finding out that that's false.
