    As someone who’s a musical theatre kid and someone who has taken a lot of voice lessons, belly breathing is the ONLY way to go! Literally today I had a voice lesson where I sang laying on the floor with a heavy book on my belly!
    I also do a lot of CrossFit style workouts and it has helped me so much! It’s amazing how it’s all connected!

    So the way I learned belly breathing in yoga class was to learn to specifically breathe such that you fill your lungs from the bottom up (belly up) and hold for a few seconds and then exhale slowly from the top down. Once you figure out how to do that, you can actually feel the difference between the top and bottoms of your lungs. It really does help with “lung capacity” which I imagine would be great for you when you run

    I started breathing exclusively from my belly in high school when I started singing more seriously. It's been so long I completely forgot that a lot of people do still breathe from their chests. Eventually you won't even need to remind yourself and it'll just be how you breathe, and chest breathing will feel incredibly shallow and uncomfortable if you try it

    • @cupfulofeathers
      @cupfulofeathers ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well done forming that habit so early in life! I've been a chest breather for probably half my life and it's negatively impacted my core and pelvic floor, not to mention causing anxiety at times. I've been trying to get better at belly breathing more consistently but I always switch back to chest breathing without thinking about it. You're the first person I've seen say that they exclusively belly breathe; I didn't even think that was possible, haha! Any tips for making it into a habit?

    • @sharonfieldstone
      @sharonfieldstone ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cupfulofeathers Thank you! I really have an old choir director to thank; so many of us were running out of breath too quickly that he told us we needed to practice breathing from our diaphragms. He'd recommended a few videos for us to watch on our own time - I think I watched some voice teachers on YT and realized how bad of a chest breather I was. Incredibly shallow breathing, weak core, definitely not enough oxygen. Just being made aware of how little air I was getting made me so anxious.
      It's been over a decade since I did this so I'm really pulling from the memory hole here, but I do remember it being difficult and taking a while. I had to catch myself a lot (less and less) over the course of at least several weeks I believe. I also did a lot of challenges with myself by taking a deep breath from my belly and seeing how long I could hold my breath or hold a note. And I was singing quite regularly. Not sure what else I did unfortunately, but eventually it finally stuck.
      It would definitely take me longer as a slightly more well-adjusted adult who has other things to think about though 😂 I was a high-strung teenager obsessed with fixing anything I thought was wrong with me. I think it's fine if it takes a while, or if you still find yourself breathing from your chest at times. You'll still see a benefit even if you just do it occasionally.

    • @Juniperrrrrr
      @Juniperrrrrr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same! My teacher in high middle/high school taught us breath control as part of learning to play the instrument. I played a baritone which requires a lot of breath and careful metering of it, which we practiced with deep belly breathing and holding it with our whole airway remaining open (holding a tube in our mouth). It feels kinda weird talking about it like this lol but I do think it helped ingrain the habit of belly breathing.
      That, plus in karate for meditation we needed to do belly breathing.

    • @Juniperrrrrr
      @Juniperrrrrr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And just to add, I'm an amateur (singing in the car lol) singer and it always sounds and feels better if I'm using the breath control and belly breathing I learned in band!

    Love this! Breathing in this way has improved my quality of life. Studies show how it reduces stress markers like cortisol, blood pressure, heart rate, improves circulation, oxygenation, nervous system regulation (thanks to the vagus nerve) and quality of sleep. As an American society we don't train each other in breathing properly, but many indigenous peoples around the world have been breathing like this for thousands of years.

    have you seem James Nestor's recent podcast episode on Diary of a CEO? it's absolutely fascinating. he's a science journalist who has researched breathing in depth for a number of years. it's apparently correlated with SO much, including common physical conditions. the body and mind are also very closely linked, so when you're breathing quickly (or 'shallow-ly') then your body interprets that as being in fight or flights. it takes more energy to breathe that way so your heart rate will also be faster with shallow breathing.
    Also, I tracked my sleep after trying to do deep breathing, and I had some of the best sleep since I've started tracking! multiple days in a row even.

    I learned how to mainly breathe from my belly naturally in drama class and continued when I started singing in highschool. Something that you can do to prevent yourself from breathing through your chest is while standing :
    Put your hands up, bent 90 degrees at the elbow lile you've been stopped by the cops and then pull your arns back as far as you can. This engages your chest muscles enough that you can't use them for breathing. Now you'll breathe from your belly

    Yooo, if you like belly breathing, u should try Wym Hofs breathing technique. From personal experience I've found it make breathing easier and deeper, gives you a natural high for a short while and makes those pesky cold showers better too. Wym actually makes a point of saying that having the cold shower at the end of a hot shower is beneficial. Turns out u dry faster afterwards too. But his breathing method, cant recommend enough, feels a bit crazy at first but the effects are noticeable in the first week. Gotta breathe deep in the cold shower, dont give in to instinct and let it go shallow and tense up to the cold, breathe slow and deep and I stg it aftually makes them nice. Used to despise them, lovem now, but always at the end of a hot one. Sry two thoughts simultaneously but they really work best together. Luv ur stuff, its awesome 😁🤟
