Solo Tarp Camping *Strange noises in the Night*

  • This trip was a bit of an experiment for me camping in the early spring and just wanted to see what it would be like with just my tarp. I was pleasantly surprised with the conditions but also surprised by the lighting in the night and the strange noises while I slept.

@meltusnowflake911 Gey it’s hard for me to eat in general sometimes. My brain decides to cut off my hunger signal, but my body is audibly hungry. I can’t force myself to eat on my own or it makes me feel extremely sick. However, if someone eats with me and I’m not focused on the food but sharing an experience with that person it makes it easier to eat (especially if they’re eating as well because then I don’t feel isolated in eating). I hope that helped 😅

I’ve done quite a bit of backcountry camping in the last 10-12 years, sometimes solo, other times with two or three of us, but something that I can never seem to get used to is the night noises! There’s ALWAYS something it seems! In Horace Kephart’s iconic “Camping & Woodcraft” published first in 1917, and still in print today, he makes reference to the woods changing when the sun goes down and “the blue devils come out”! If you’ve never seen it before, the book is a very interesting look at “woodcraft”, as they called bushcraft back then, back in the day! Much of the info is still useful, although some parts are downright funny in 2022, like what kind of nails, cast iron skillets etc. should be included in your pack for a trip into the backcountry! Our modern day ultralight backpackers would have a convulsion!

I always cook and eat at a different location than the campsite where I'm going to be sleeping. That's because bears can smell the food in your campsite even when you've removed it. Just makes good sense. I've never had a bear problem at my campsite, although I have seen evidence of a bear at the place where I left my food hanging from a tree after getting up in the morning and checking things out.

I've had things bump up against our cabin, and it was heavy and powerful. I was afraid it was going to come through the glass doors. I closed the blinds, not that it would have done any good. But it lasted most of the night and scared the hell out of me. We've sold the cabin since. My parents were also frightened by something like it, and decided it was time to stay in the city.

Sasquatch's are known to mimic humans and even baby's crying. Whoops, screams, growls, whistling, wood knocks, rock throwing and throwing things, tree breaks, pushing over large trees, putting trees upside down, rock clacking, and heavy footfalls. They're illusive and even hide in the dark while being observed by infrared and thermal cameras. Thanks for sharing your camping trip and I hope you stayed warm!

Great video! You shouldn’t have to worry much about bears this time of year. It takes them several weeks after emerging from their dens to start to get an appetite back. This time of year they are generally only interested in feeding on plants and vegetation until their metabolism gets back to a normal state. Certainly doesn’t hurt to be cautious by hanging your food away from camp though, in the meantime.

Next morning I went to go investigate where the pear of eyes where and the only thing left behind where broken branches and still to this day I can still remember the sound.

Hey Xander, great videos! I've been binge watching your vids, and they are all so great! Thank you for those!
Just wondering how you would have converted your set-up during this trip if it had rained? Would you have used your tracking poles to pull a line across and fold the tarp down over the line to make a roof? I'm just curious, as I'm planning on doing more solo trips with limited gear too.

11:00 this is why i never want to go camping or at very least not alone 😂 i know some of you might disagree with this but in my country (Indonesia) its very common to suspect something like this as supernatural phenomenon such as ghost sighting or the ghost making sound to lure you to them. There are MANY scary stories involving hiker and camper in Indonesia, especially in mountains/forests that many consider as somewhat sacred places.

Thanks, Rick I really appreciate it! I really enjoyed the Storm as well it was super beautiful to watch. Could be a fox. my guess was a moose, someone mentioned a baby beaver which could make sense because the slapping water noise, I'll keep my ear to the ground! have a great day

I live in rural Maine and it’s hard to make out with the other sounds but it sounded like a deer fawn/moose calf bleating for its mother.
That cracked ice is rather disturbing. I would have investigated. I bet the baby fell through. Now I’m going to wonder.

Hey friend! Mostly just the black bears I'm concerned with. Ive got to start hanging my food in trees now. Ill start carrying bearspray too just incase i encounter a momma with cubs on the trail which can be a bit dangerous. In the fall i might be a bit concerned with Moose because they're all jacked up with testosterone because of the Rut but mostly just the bears. If i lived on the west coast id be super concerned with the Grizzlies but fortunately we only have the smaller black bears

    • @XanderBudnick
      @XanderBudnick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thanks, my friend! I usually camp on crown lands. it's tedious to find at first but with some practice, you can find it easily - The Crownland Use Policy Atlas online is a bit difficult to understand at first but there's lots of tutorials on youtube. I like the IHunter App better but you need to cough up $25ish bucks for the crownland info subscription. but its worth it if you're serious! Have an awsome day!

Xander - easiest way to make pizza in a pan. Pour Bisquick into the pan and mix it with enough water to make it thick. Place it on the camp fire for 3 minutes. Take it off and load it with your ingredients then place it back on the fire for about 5 minutes and now you have the perfect pizza!

The 2nd thing you could do with your lean-to. Put one pole in the middle of you tarp. Then bring your corner down to the ground. This way if the wind changes you can protect yourself from wind, rain and snow. Then if it gets really bad you can bring both corners down to get out of the elements. Keep your fire at arms length away for easy starting in the mornings.
Myself I use a 12X12 foot canvas tarp to make my lean-to. I've used my set up many times for camping and hunting. Fun set up
