I've travelled on XPTs a lot. The main reason people choose first class is the 'quality' of the passengers. If you like travelling with noisy backpackers and sometimes 'interesting' people, economy is fine.
Meth heads and other undesirables unfortunately in Economy on the North Coast Line. As an Age Pensioner I get generous discount to go First Class. Feel very sorry for all the good reasonable people in Economy subjected to the crappy antics of the minority of low-lifes around them. Only low alcohol beer available on this line too, for a good reason.
I've taken first class on the XPT between Brisbane and Kyogle twice in 2022. Mainly because the fair was discounted at the time i travelled. But i was able to get a nap in the seats due to the extra recline and leg room.
Glad to see you back in Australia Josh, enjoy watching all your videos and supporting a fellow Aussie, keep up the great work and safe travels in the new year :)
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words! I have some ideas for regional Aus which I will try do, I need more time to head out and do those ones, so need to find the time 🤣
Thank you! That was really informative. I am about to embark on a journey to Armidale with my children, and I decided to "treat " them with first class tickets on the XPT. They wanted to know what first class looked like, as we've made the trip before in economy. Now I can show them this, so they can get a good insight into what their trip may look like.
The name New South Wales came from the journal of Lieutenant James Cook (later Captain Cook), who sailed up the east coast of Australia in 1770. He thought that the land looked like the south coast of Wales so he named it "New South Wales".
He was never a naval captain, the Admiralty promised promotion but never actually fullfilled their promises, when he died his wife was refused a pension
I’ve heard the blue mountains were also named the Carmarthen hills initially after the fan ranges. Lived near both and can’t say I see the connecting though
@@kevinarchbold3704 The captain of any warship (small 'c') is not the same as the naval rank of Captain (capital 'C'). Any naval officer who commands a ship is addressed by naval custom as "captain" while aboard in command, regardless of their actual rank, Most officers commanding a warship hold a lower rank than Captain, and that is still true today. Only larger warships are usually captained by an officer with the rank of Captain. On Cook's first voyage as a commanding officer he had the rank of a Lieutenant, later to become a Commander, and finally a 'post-Captain (a rank now no longer in use) indicating commanding a smaller ship than would normally be the case for a Captain. He was also Captain of Greenwich Hospital (for Navy personnel) in 1775/76. His best known portrait is from there. The national Museum of Australia indicates that, in the painting, he is wearing 'his post-captain’s full-dress uniform'. His wife lived on a pension from the Admiralty of 200 pounds a year until her death. Her three sons also each received a pension of 25 pounds per year. She died at 93 years old and left money for the poor in her area.
What is this woke stuff? Cook was promoted to Captain after his second voyage of discovery, which was mostly in the Southern Ocean trying to discover the Antarctic mainland. He did not actually sight Antarctica due to ice and wild weather but he was certain land was somewhere further south, as all the icebergs were made from fresh water, so they had to be breaking off from land, right?
Thank you for showing your journey. I'm travelling back to Dubbo via Train for the first time tomorrow and its good to know that there isn't anywhere to charge my laptop on the carriage.
Thank you for your very informative video showing interior of train and differences between economy and first class. Im looking forward to my first XPT explorer train trip soon so it’s really great to see what to expect! ❤❤❤
The Sydney to Dubbo service passes through some very scenic countryside, particularly through the Blue Mountains to Bathurst. I was lucky to spot numerous Kanagroos on the return journey somewhere around that area. 1st class suited me, much less costly than Standard class here in England, so it was great value for me. Not sure I'll get back to Oz before the XPTs are retired, sadly.
For some reason, the C & W inspired backing track you chose is made for impromptu boot-scooting up and down the XPT First Class Carriage aisle. Loving the XPT stories, by the way. Keep up the great work!
It's called New South Wales because Captain Cook, the leader of the first British expedition to the area, thought the coastline resembled that of South Wales..
Travelled 1st class Dubbo to Sydney No reclining seat very uncomfortable and the guard had to keep removing the indigenous freeloaders, never again. Took over an hour more than driving
Thanks so much! I have tried to do some regional towns and areas and have plans for some more (I have done Tamworth and blue mountains etc) but I’m finding my viewers seem to unsubscribe when I post those, so at the moment I am not too sure. I still have some planned, but will keep them to a minimum.
@@JoshGoesSlow How interesting. Not good for your channel to lose subs. I like your presentation style so I'll hang in here to see where you head for your next adventure. 👍
At 186cm tall, I find the extra legroom in 'First Class' is worth the extra price, especially for long journeys. Not a fan of being cramped for so long. Hopefully the new trains will roll out soon, that replace the ageing XPT fleet.
Keef78 .. I empathise with your statoabout Australian trains to a point. I live in WA and our trains (not many, but nonetheless) are better than flying - fast, high class entertainment systems back of seats, very comfortable and affordable XPT-like buffet. Queensland trains are awesome in my estimation as well. If you get the chance, check out other systems than just NSW. Even though they're old, i still like your XPTs. The trains that run to/from Canberra are so woeful on every way, especially ride ability and comfort that I'll fly or take a bus in or out of Canberra next time. Also, TransWA intercity voaches are as good as their Prospector trains comfort-wise and having the same back of seat entertainment system, free wifi and smooth ride. Things might change your perspective on NSW trains when the XPT replacement trains start arriving. Happy travels mate👍
For the same price you can go first class in a daysitter cabin. Phone charging power point, private and far more space. I would ever go back to the standard FC again. You have to do a phone booking to request these, no option on the web page.
I’d love to try the daysitter one day, I have done the overnight sleeper in the same cabin. They don’t put that carriage on the Dubbo XPT, only the Brisbane and Melbourne XPT’s I think.
I think the reason why people travel in "first class" is not because of the slightly extra legroom and reclining seats but to get away from all the druggies/weirdos/bogans that travel in economy. I myself have travelled in economy class many times and seen all kinds of unsavoury characters on that train. Hence that's why I choose to fly. But I guess if people want to sit back and watch the scenery go by then by all means take the slow old Xpt.
I do travel 1st Class. Mainly because it is a bit more quiet than Economy. But there is no REAL difference between 1st Cass & Economy. The new XPTs should have a better layout & more comfortable seats. Single seats included. 1st Class food carriage. So you don't have to go into Economy to get food. Fold down/up armrests on window. Because they there is no where to rest your arm . Because of the rounded edges. And with the trains being longer will passengers at front get off 1st at their station ? Then train move forward to let passengers at rear get off ?
XPT Economy class is where noisy drunk unwashed people on $1 concession tickets travel. XPT First class is for people who pay their own way and want to travel in peace and quiet.
I believe James Cook came up with New South Wales. It followed the great British tradition of sailing round the world naming everything they touched or saw after some place or person back in the UK. It's why we have so many damned places named after British royalty or nondescript British ministers, officials or other people that the explorers wanted to suck up to. Unfortunately when we gained independence we just kept on doing it.
James Cook originally named the whole of the East Coast of Australia "New Wales', not 'New South Wales'. This was after he had sailed up the entire East Coast from Point Hicks [named after one of his crew] to Possession Island right up at the top of what is now Queensland. So Queensland and Victoria were originally also called 'New Wales'. The naming ceremony happened at Possession Island. Cook would have known that there was already a New England, a Nova Scotia [i.e. New Scotland] and at least one New Britain. When he returned to England, somebody probably reminded him that there was already a New Wales in Canada, part of what is now the State of Ontario, so when he was preparing his journals he inserted the word 'South', to differentiate it from the Canadian one. Nobody knows for sure, but 'South' probably means more 'in the Southern Hemisphere' to differentiate it from the Canadian one. It probably does not refer to the actual coastline of South Wales.
Aussie trains are shameful, we really need to up our game, as a kid it was alright as an adult no bloddy way. ive been to many countries and most of them put ours to shame especially japan, their premium economy was amazing compared to xpt.
The reason to go in First Class is to get away from the pissed drug addicts and depressingly dysfunction families that unfortunately frequent the XPT’s. Once you have experienced one of the expletive laden melt downs, you will pay the extra $25 all the time.
Economy ... you mean cattle class. Economy can be murder on larger (taller/muscleier vs fat) people for the leg room. The recline might be more beneficial on night trips but couldn't see the point in the day.
XPT = crap carriages last refurbed in 2008 no power oulets for a device... yes if desperate 1st class is essential but you will be in for a very slow noisy trip
Embarrassed to think overseas travellers, especially train enthusiasts pay top dollar for a economy ride on our not so upmarket trains. The state governments will not be happy till they run all passenger services into the ground.

The XPT in Australia are iconic trains that are our cousin to the Class 43 HSTs in the UK. And how those trains are kept in good condition.

South Wales and NSW do look a bit similar. The former even has sand beaches.
