I Built My Own Presence Detection Sensor!

  • After taking a look at the Aqara FP1 Sensor a few weeks back, noticing it's lack of availability and price tag, I decided tried to build my own presence detection sensor with a much tighter budget. Both of these are mmWave sensors used for Human Presence Detection in rooms where there is no motion and can detect the smallest amount of movement. In this video, I show you what I used, how I installed it and how to integrate it with ESPHome and Home Assistant in your Smart Home. Finally we look at how well it compares to the Aqara FP1?

    I love the way the community can come together and make cheap sensors to solve so many problems.
    Could directional movement be written into the Arduino Sketch, based on the time it takes from when a wave is sent out and it is detected by the sensor?

    If I had to wager a guess, I think that the faster detection speed but reduce feature set compared to the Aqara go hand in hand. The Aqara must be doing some sort of processing to determine the movement direction, etc, which would contribute to the slower detection time.
    Essentially your sensor just yells "I saw something" immediately, while the Aqara checks a few things first before letting you know.

    • @EverythingSmartHome
      @EverythingSmartHome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was my guess too but very hard to know for sure!

    • @timplett1
      @timplett1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EverythingSmartHome well they HAVE to have some increased calculation time. To know which direction a person is moving they need to take multiple readings over a period of time to know where the person started and where they moved to.

    • @dozog
      @dozog ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a similar thought. It's possible the Aqara has two (or more) sensors built in that it needs to correlate to get additional speed, direction, noise data.
      (It would surprise me if that took a few seconds though. But it could be that they do some kind of sample/sleep scheme for power reduction )

    You CAN set the sensitivity on this sensor. Not sure why you haven't in this video. I had to turn mine way down to prevent detecting very minute motions. You'd have be not breathing and stone cold to not trigger it. I can send over an esphome config if you like. I also don't understand why people want to pair PIR with mmwave, as PIR isn't inherently quicker. It seems you've tried to compensate for a lack of sensitivity adjustment here with latency adjustment, which makes it slower. Mine turns the lights on the instant I come into the room. It's not possible for it to be any faster.

      I was following the "XeThru" sensors that did breathing rate since about 2016 or so lusting after them for every room in my house. Glad to see if finally becoming mainstream and even better cheap as the XeThru dev modules were like $400+ :D

    What do you think about thermal occupancy sensors, like the AMG8833?
    A guy in the LTT Jasco video comments said he built a great solution for just $30 using that sensor, he says the the system can detect body heat and know if the room is in use, even if you're laying on the couch and not moving. Would fix the window curtain issue for sure!

  • @cooperised

    That is awesome! Suggestion: could you use a PIR to switch on the lights and also trigger the radar to wake from sleep, with the radar going back to sleep when the lights go off? Could save lots of power.

    • @thesimbon
      @thesimbon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How much power are we talking about?

    • @cooperised
      @cooperised 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thesimbon That's a good question, but the ESP8266 is not known for being frugal. Given the price of energy I like to keep the consumption of anything that's on 24/7 to a minimum, and since Lewis already mentioned coupling it with a PIR for room entry detection this seemed like an easy win.

    • @EverythingSmartHome
      @EverythingSmartHome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess you could, although even at today's energy prices the savings would be very very minimal I think

    • @cooperised
      @cooperised 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EverythingSmartHome Any idea what the consumption of your sensor is? It's likely to be the WiFi rather than the radar that dominates it, I reckon, but it would be interesting to know.

    • @thesimbon
      @thesimbon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cooperised esp8266 still takes time to boot after sleep and that would ruin the fast response time of the sensor. It would be nice to have tasmota or similar able to take advantage of low power processor in esp32

    Hi, I have a quite big open room, including kitchen, living room and dinning room in one. Kind of want 2 of them in the same location, directed in different directions. Is there any intelligence here or will they just interfere with each other? I guess you can put some metal in the back to make some shielding. Being able to use different frequencies or codes would be great. Any such features?

    Hi, great guide and and awesome that you share this with us.
    I am looking to make this but found that DFrobot also has a smaler sensor mmWave Radar Sensor Arduino-Human Presence Detection Wiki - DFRobot
    You think this will work also, similar spec but on the 5.8GHz band.
    And cheeper.
    Want to do around 10pcs so finding a similar but cheaper sensor would be awsome.
