  • In the North African campaign a British straggler manages to pass himself off as a waiter at the hotel commandeered as Rommel's headquarters. He has thoughts of assassinating Rommel but his cover may have an even better use.

    Underrated film

I like this more than I used to - and to be honest it's almost a relief not to be asked to like Ernst Rommel yet again. I am reminded by now of Albert Finney's mate in Gumshoe and his desire to never see James Mason take the general off again. Anyway a good watch and actually I rather liked the very start too.

I think I’ll like the start on rewatch. It was just the unknown first time around. It’s a really great film. I think the direction is really top notch from the introduction of Rommel to the way it leads the story visually.

Great review! You have a new subscriber. I haven’t seen Five Graves in many years but will be picking up the Kino Lorber blu-ray soon here in the states. A Joseph McBride commentary on that edition. Were there any good extras on the MOC? Interesting that Wilder brought von Stroheim back for Sunset Boulevard.

Adrian Martin commentary, discussion with Wilder, radio adaptation, several essays on booklet, I think you pays your money and take your choice

As a suspense / war movie, this is pretty good.
As the third movie by an immigrant in the country of the 'enemy' dealing with the war that was fought at the same time the movie was made, this is an incredible achievement and an awesome movie.
Also, respect to Wilder for letting the German cast speak German. As a German myself, I absolutely hate it when in WWII movies from the 50s and 60s ze Germans speak viz zis crazy Inglisch äccent ven zere are only ozer Germans around.

Watched it recently myself and loved it! As you say some real moments of suspense and a poignant ending as well.

I think Fritz Lang may beat out Billy Wilder by one for most MoC Blu-rays. I'll be jiggered if I can work out the DVDs - goes back to review. PS I think Murnau is a close third and quite right too.

There are still some massive names missing from the MOC

    • @iododendron3416
      @iododendron3416 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From memory:
      Lang:
      Der Müde Tod
      Dr. Mabuse 1
      Dr. Mabuse 2
      Dr. Mabuse 3
      Die Nibelungen
      M
      Metropolis
      Spione
      Die Frau im Mond
and on DVD two adventure movies which names escape me right now
      That's 11
      Wilder:
      Five Graves to Kairo
      Double Indemnity
      The Lost Weekend
      A Forgein Affair
      Ace in the Hole
      Stalag 17
      Witness for the Prosecution
      One, Two, Three...
      Irma la Douce
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
      Fedora
      That's also 11
They tie, unless I forgot a movie.
EDIT: which I did by not mentioning Lang's American films, which are at least 3,I think. So Lang wins!
In any case, how awesome for a British label to have so many movies from Germany or from German / Austrian directors.

@@WolfGratz incidentally, there are three Wilder movies that have yet to be released on Blu Ray, the Emperor Waltz, the Spirit of St. Louis and Buddy, Buddy. Although all of them are weaker movies of his. Which means they're good.
