    Thanks, Bob!🌷I’ve recently bought the Dutch version of Melancholy I and II by Jon Fosse. I didn’t know it would be eligible for the Booker International this year. It’s the one together with Time Shelter that I do hope will make the long list.😊📚

    • @BobTheBookerer
      @BobTheBookerer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh, yes, that’s the funny thing about the timings sometimes- a book just appears on the list even though it’s been kicking around elsewhere for a while. And yes! Fosse is such an interesting author, so I’m happy for the excuse to read more of his.

    Big reading months ahead. I will probably get hold of a few of the International Booker longlist, but then there is also the Womens Prize and Stella Prize...I need to become a full time reader.

    Your guess is probably better than most Bob! I’d love to read the long list but access is an issue from the U.S unless we want to buy and ship a bunch of books which might not even get here for months 😉 I do love Space Invaders and The Twilight Zone, Nona Fernandez’s other translated into English book. I very much feel the same as you about Bitter Orange Tree and have Ghost Town currently on hold as it was up for the PEN translation prize here. I’ve read Of Saints and Miracles and Body Kintsugi and really liked both especially the latter and want to read Our Love of Night but my library has it on order. Other than those I know very little about most of these and so am very much looking to see what gets on the long list even if I can’t get to them before the prize is announced.

    • @BobTheBookerer
      @BobTheBookerer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh, fingers crossed you can get access to them! I think it’s quite a quick turnaround between longlist and winner, so hopefully we can find them!
      So excited for Space Invaders!

    It was great to hear your thoughts on the eligible books!! I feel like Enriquez, Fosse and Zambra have really good shots. I’m curious to see what does make it in the end, and which of those I actually want to pick up haha I might give the longlist a shot as well!! I also love that because of the nature of the book industry, the Booker international effectively serves to highlight cool independent presses 😊

      I’ve not yet, but I really want to! I’m not sure how much history is needed for it, but it seems to be one that lots of people have read without much background.

    The engilsh speaking booker? They should change the names, since the international booker could have books from wales or ireland that have been written in those languages, while the "other" booker has books from zimbabwe or india or australia that have been written in english... Also, I am calling that dying is easier than loving is going to make it for the pure fact that it is a 500 page book third in a trilogy I believe.

    • @BobTheBookerer

    The question of eligibility for the International Booker (I prefer Translated Booker - the other one takes entries from many different countries) is so tangled! The fact that Jon Fosse is eligible with Melancholy is just weird since I have a copy in English published in 2006 by the Dalkey Archive Press in the US, and the book itself was written in the 90s, so we wouldn’t really be celebrating new fiction, just fiction that the English speaking world ignored for ages!

    • @BobTheBookerer
      @BobTheBookerer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! It’s odd, right? Yoko Ogawa’s book a couple of years ago had been out in Japan since the 80s too, so it’s a blurred line for when it is translated etc. I found Aliss at the Fire on Scribd, but the US edition, so that would have been eligible for a US prize years ago, but now for the UK. It’s complex for sure!

    • @BobTheBookerer
