I love this list so much, this is why this year you've become the online reviewer/creator who I trust most when it comes to book recs. Paradais is also one of my favourites of the year and I Our Share of Night is already sitting on my shelf, now I'm even more excited to read it. I especially want to thank you for the review you posted earlier this year for Solo Dance, because I picked it up and its actually my favourite book of the year! It really helped me and meant a lot to me. I'm currently working in a bookstore in Berlin as a help over christmas and we have a display of our "best books of 2022" to which I contributed Solo Dance and its so great seeing people buy it, especially as not many people know about it in Germany. So thank you so much for your incredible work here on TH-cam and on your blog!

Finished 'Life Ceremony' yesterday and absolutely loved it! I've now read all of Sayaka Murata's books in translation. Thank you very much for introducing her to me and so many others!!!
Edit: completely agreed with your review of it by the way!

I just recently finished Our Share of the Night, and this is a definite new favorite! Life Ceremony and Paradais were also standouts for me! I got an ARC of Monstrilio and I hope you'll read and review this one in the future, it's probably my favorite book of 2022.

I loved these recommendations! As I dabble into Japanese literature, I find that there is emphasis on leaving room for interpretation, as well as this “air of mystery” that challenges you to think hard.

    • @WillowTalksBooks

I agree, that is very much true for a lot of Japanese lit!

Diary of A Void has been on my TBR for a while but I think you've just made it jump to the top and Sayaka Murata has been one of my favourite authors for years but I haven't kept up enough to know she had a new book out so thank you for the recommendations

This might not even be a relevant comment but I love your channel, it's a perfect mix of all the things I like about literature and fiction. I can't be part of your patreons for now since I'm still a student struggling hard to make it through life but I guess one day I'll make it in life and then i'mma be able to appreciate the art that people create hehe.... But yeah I'm really thankful for your videos, it might seem like an exaggeration but creators like you play a really distinct role in keeping me alive and motivated since I struggle with my health a lot as well and often need the help of fiction to be hopeful, so thankyou for existing!

Hi Willow! I just started watching your videos a few weeks ago and I love them so much. I google every book you talk about to try and find them in French translation because you make me want to read literally every one of them 😂 I'm currently reading Our Share of Night and hope it's also going to make it to my favorites list of 2022! (I've read and loved Our Wives Under the Sea, and bought The Hole too). Thank you for the amazing recommendations ✨ I hope you have a lovely end of the year.

The best book I've read by far is this year's Booker winner "The seven moons of Maali Almaida" by Shehan Karunatilaka. I think I didn't has as many quotes speaking to me since "Master and Marguerite". I have it as an ebook but I want to get a a physical copy. I wished I could get it signed by the author. I think I will be rereading it again and again, I already feel I want too.

I have been in a reading slump for a few months and haven't watched any book related content, but as soon as I clicked on this video you reignited my love of books and you manage to do that everytime! Wonderful list here. I've been wanting to read Ghost Town for months now. It isn't often I get to read a novel in translation where the story takes place in Berlin - where I live. The premise sounds thrilling in the most quiet way. Life Ceremony will be next on my list!

Life Ceremonies and Violets keep popping up on my radar. Really want to check them both out! That's so true about men walking down the street. I usually won't move out of the way, the man can move for the tran! Ooh yeah Solo Dance sounds good too! Dang I had no idea about Qiu Miaojin 😭

Hi Willow, I would like to thank you for introducing me this year to Selva Almada, I picked up "No Es Un Rio" caused it's been recently translated to portuguese, and it was one of my favorites this year, a truly amazing book. I don't know if it's been translated to English yet but when it is I strongly reccomend you give it a read!

  • @AbsurdExistentialist

  • @shubiektywnie

I love how you described “All the lovers…” and “Life ceremony”. For me, although I appreciate them (but not my favourites by these authors, similarly to you I love “Breasts and Eggs” and “Convenience Store Woman” the most), they were really difficult for me to pin down. I had some loose, vague points floating around in my head, but couldn’t find a way to bind them somehow and you did it hands down 😁
By the way, if you still haven’t, I think you should read “Malay Sketches” by Alfian Sa’at, I’m almost sure you’ll love it!

@@WillowTalksBooks Yes, the kids only read american novels. If they read 100 books a year, the 100 are american novels, the majority chick lit novels.

The only book I've read from this list is Paradais, which was so painful and brutal, but also really meaningful. 🥲 I'll slowly get around to reading all of these books.
