You could see a puzzled look on that dog's face where it is trying to figure out if the lady had completely lost her mind, or if her intelligence had, all of the sudden exceeded, all of humankind's intelligence. Dog was like " Is this chick for real right now?" and then kind of a worried look as if it was thinking "Oh no! What if this chick is broken and it's up to me to take care of her?"
My pic tells all! Lost my best best friend 10 years ago and I still expect to see her most days. She lived for that 1st fall of snow and would celebrate with total abandon! She was easily smarter and friendlier than most people! Miss her still and always will!

when the dog looks at the door its telling you it knows what you mean on the leash test. When a dog is loyal it sees a closed door then looks at u because it knows it needs you to open the door.
I enjoyed your video and healthy puppy. My 8 year old Australian Shepherd couldn't do the test though. I put a standard shower towel over his head and he stood there for an entire hour, he barely moved. He knows I'm right there, so I can't call him dumb, he's just like "I know this is a towel, and I don't mind it". XD
Neat test. My Lucy girl’s toy was hanging off the deck by a long cord...I watched her pull the cord up with her mouth, pin the cord to the deck with her paw, and again relocate her mouth below her paw and pull up the cord until she was able to grasp her toy. Smart girl !
I have an 8 month old Australian Shepherd who's training to be my service Dog. At 16 weeks old he taught himself how to open the frig, he taught me the true meaning of putting things up, like over my head because he could and would figure out how to get it. He taught me when he was hungry, he brought his bowl dropped it at my feet and started barking. If he has to potty he grabs my arm. So far he's taught me and well I've just been amazed.
Gina Gentry same with mine. He's amazing. When I first got him, I was suffering with pretty bad PTSD and he would literally not only take care of me but learned so quickly how to communicate his needs to me without training. It's pretty wild. He would get his leash and toss it at my feet if he needed to go out and he would bring me his food and water bowl as soon as they were empty. I couldn't BELIEVE an untrained puppy could even be that intelligent. 😍
Same with my 8month old aussie! He is so amazingly intuitive, and always picking up new tasks to help me. He took right to Deep pressure therapy, nudges me when I'm stressing (even started doing this to my husband when he's stressing). He makes his needs clear, which really helps me take care of him and myself, too!
@@heavaden I had a cancer scare and my Aussie came in from the backyard, climbed onto the couch, then sat on my lap, and then put his paws behind my neck and pulled me to him, and hugged me. I had told no one. He just knew. He always knew what was going on with everyone in our family. He died a few weeks ago and we're all sad. But - we know enough to know that it's not ok to just be without a dog. So, we'll get another pup from a reputable breeder, and soon.
I've had 2 Aussies and now blessed with a new puppy. Both were smart but first one was a genius. She learned to spell after we had to quit using words. Obeyed hand signals and seemed to know what we wanted of her before we asked. When she wanted to walk she would go and get my wife's socks and shoes and bring them all out until you agreed to go. I have a bell on the door Pink rings to go out. This morning she rang the bell and when I headed to the door, she took me to her dish. She was ready for breakfast. I didn't teach her that. A couple nights ago, she rang the bell to go out. When I got to the door, she took me to the back door where the outside light is. She would rather use the door with the outside light after dark. Aussies are super smart dogs. I am looking forward to many years of fun and learning with her.

Haha mine goes absolutely fucking mental, and if I even mumble the word “Skate”, then he borderline has a stroke. He’s pretty well-trained too, but I think his need/love for exercise is on the high-end even for an Aussie.
My mini Aussie got into a candy jar, got a couple of Hershey Kisses, unwrapped and are them and left the foil wrappers in a neat pile - all without knocking the jar over. True story
All I have to do is say walk and my Aussie gets so excited. There are many words we have to be careful not to say in our house! She picked up the box in her teeth turned it upside down and shook out the treat.
No--- Aspen got a whole win, if she is used to you coming along on a walk she is smart to wait for you, she knows the protocol, I would avoid the box and maybe a plastic cup or inside one of those ball toys to avoid teaching ripping unless one wants that, she clearly knows how to do it, yeah Aspen! She looked like she didn't want to go for a walk without you. She is beautiful. We have a dog we rescued years ago that looks just her but she has brown eyes, and not quite a fluffy but very soft fur, we live in Australia, so much hotter temperatures. We weren't sure if she was Australian Shepherd or border collie.

I think it had more to do with her dog was waiting for her to put the harness on her before she walked outside because she knew that had to happen before she got to go for the walk. While dogs that have just a leash and collar may not think about it much because it takes so little time to just latch it on the collar and you can do that standing right by the door.
She understands language (all of it, not just a few words). When you did the leash test, you didn't tell her what she needed to do to pass the test, but you did with the other ones. For example, you said "to pass this test she needs to get the treat with her paw."

The walk - she seemed like she was waiting for you to “trick her” like im not gonna Act Stoopid and excited if you are just mucking about. And I I swear when you first asked her if she wanted go for a walk she shook he4 head no, twice. More keen on snacking.
I tried the same tests just now with one of our Aussies, Pumpkin. Pumpkin really enjoyed the treats and had similar results to what Aspen did. Smart dogs.
I do think the leash thing is affected by how well trained your dog is. It seems your dog is extremely well trained as commands are not repeated often so she knows better than to get super hyper and run to the door or grab the leash.
im a iraq war veteran and my Aussie Rebel amazes me just how smart he is. i got him as a stray and the Army trained him, but now hes my very best friend.
Gosh! So, the startup music jingle just gave me a heart attack ... ... doggie is pretty cute though ... made up for it. Towel flip was legendary! Did it sometimes with a shirt to tease our Goldie ... his stare afterwards literally be like: "Dude! What´s up with u?"
I love these dogs. I personally have one myself and although he’s a bit bitty because he’s still a puppy he’s very smart. These dogs are pretty quick learners. :)

I have 4 Australian shepherds. They are extremely intelligent. My mini aussie Marley knows the English language and that's the truth. Full sentences Of all 4 dogs I've had him since he was 2months old. I talked to him all the time and still do. He's 8 years old now. Everyone says he's a human in a dogs body lolo. It took me a couple times to train him on the 7 basic commands and more. He dances when I say dance, rolls over, crawls, leave it, no barking, be nice and much more. he also knows hand signals so if he can't hear me and can only see me he can still follow commands. If I say Marley go get your blanket he will go get it. Or Marley let's go this way and I point he knows and does what I say. He's such a good boy. He never chewed up anything he wasn't supposed to, dug etc..I have had different breeds of dogs my whole life and Australian shepherds are definitely the smartest, sweetest and most easy to train.
yeah, if I pull out a leash my dogs just bark like crazy and follow us because they know we always put the leashes on before leaving, and that if they want to leave they need the leash first. That's the reason they get excited to see the leash because leash = walking, not door.
I also have a black tri Aussie and he’s still a puppy, but yet he can do just about anything BUT sit still. He’s very energetic, even with our big field there’s no slowing him down, he’s never tired XD

My Australian Sheperd is very intelligent as well she looks a lot like this dog. My dog is afraid of thunder and refuses to take a bath in water so I have to do the waterless shampoo. She tries so hard to talk to me She is a rescue dog so I do not know how she was treated before but she loves to be brushed and is a very calm and loving dog The one problem I have with her is she tries to herd my cats
We have an Australian Shepherd Dotty who is the smartest dog I’ve ever seen. Like she can understand simple basic conversations, if you said like on that show Lassie, Timmy is stuck in the well go and get him out, she would know what you said and go get him. It’s only certain dogs though, because we have a younger Australian Shepherd, her “sister,” who doesn’t follow what you say most of the time like she does and really doesn’t care. Dotty goes crazy when you blow bubbles and tries to pop every one, if you never have try that with your Australian Shepherd and see what they do. She also is absolutely terrified of taking a bath (and she’s given one every week by the dog groomer), when she thinks the Mobile Dog bath truck is there, she gets under the bed and trembles and shakes she is so scared until she is convinced that Melissa is not there lol.
First time i tried to put the towel on my aussies head, he jumped back and smacked it off before it even settled, lmao 😂 took him 10 seconds to get it out from under the towel, but he hesitated to dig at it and instead chose to push it with his snout because I've had to teach him not to dig at my blankets and sheets because he was putting holes in them when trying to move them around so i think that slowed him down, saw him lift a paw then think better of it. Used his paws to get the treat, and sat in front of me before walking to the door when i asked him if he wanted to go for a walk. He's 11 months old, they're smart dogs. I lived with a couple border collies for a couple years, he seems just as capable in most ways, he's just a little more stubborn and lower drive, though he's only half working line aussie so it's not a completely fair comparison.
Aussies don't need an intelligence test. Mine's smart, sneaky, crafty, and has a personality and a sense of humor. He smiles. He laughs when he sneaks down the hallway and jumps out at me when I come out of the bathroom. He thinks it's hilarious! Best of all, he senses when I'm in a rotten mood, and he knows how to make ME laugh! He also know his boundaries. One time, ONE TIME, he crossed the line. It was Thanksgiving, and the spiral-sliced ham had been in the oven for over two hours. He could smell it, you know he could. When it was finally ready, I took it out, sliced it up, and arranged the pieces on a platter on the kitchen cutting board. Five minutes later, I saw "Luke-Dog" gently put his paws on the counter and EVER-SO-GENTLY take JUST ONE thin slice of ham, then haul his butt into his favorite corner "hiding spot." How could we be mad about that? The whole family laughed, because that was just Lucas' personality!
The door thing looks like you've just raised her differently. Like she only expects go go out certain times of the day or for you to put on the leash first. We put on the leash in the hall by the front door so when we take the leash she'd probably automatically go into the hall by the door. (When she was younger, now she's old and doesn't want to go) Though we also have a (Dutch) cue... so not 100% sure what she would have done without the cue anymore.
If I leave my three yr old aussie-wheaton's leash where she can get it, it's a game, I say "goobye car" she carries it to the door and bounces the screen door open and runs to the car and sits .. I had to resort to getting several puzzles for her, or she gets bored and mopes. Luckily she's not ever been destructive. I saw how your girl acted toward the box.. I bet she would have left it alone if you weren't there to say it was okay to have. They really have a conscience between right and wrong. My 15 year old russel runs off and my wheaton-aussie won't ever leave the yard, but to find her lil buddy after franticly wagging and vocalizing to tell me he wandered. Dang smart dogs even when mixed with a large terrier, best of both worlds!! The negatives of either breed is muted. Both of my dogs passed the test btw, I'm not sure whose more clever, it's a circus around here!
The thing is that Australian Shepard’s are technically one of the smartest breeds, and I know because I have a Australian Shepard Puppy, but yeah. I just love Australian Shepard’s about how playful they are and there personality, their just so energetic and silly along with them having good looks. By the way...YOUR RED TRI IS SO PRETTY!!!! I have a Blue Merle! All of the colors of them are so pretty! Another thing I love about them is there eyes, their either a really pretty ocean blue or there two completely different colors! So yeah, just some facts and opinions about Aussies! ;)
Just out of curiosity, how did you teach her to only rip things up when she is on her bed? Looking at getting an Aussie and that seems to be a pretty valuable thing!
I know you were asking her. but, train your dog WORDS. First train them to listen, and that you are communicating. Aussies are brilliant! and if you are consistant with the words you use, the dog will know what you are saying to them. So to teach this, teach the word no. and Here. If you see your dog tearing up something, or found something they have tore up,take it and place it in the area that the dog is allowed such activity. When they begin to do it in the correct spot, simply praise them. If you teach them words, then you can communicate many things, without actually teaching each indicidual behavior. Hope you decided to get one! I simply LOVE the breed!!!! Got my newest puppy two days ago for my grandson!

She didn't go to the door but she was smart enough to stand there until her leash was put on. I say this is a smart dog.

She understands language (all of it, not just a few words). When you did the leash test, you didn't tell her what she needed to do to pass the test, but you did with the other ones. For example, you said "to pass this test she needs to get the treat with her paw."

I tried the same tests just now with one of our Aussies, Pumpkin. Pumpkin really enjoyed the treats and had similar results to what Aspen did. Smart dogs.

I do think the leash thing is affected by how well trained your dog is. It seems your dog is extremely well trained as commands are not repeated often so she knows better than to get super hyper and run to the door or grab the leash.

I love these dogs. I personally have one myself and although he’s a bit bitty because he’s still a puppy he’s very smart. These dogs are pretty quick learners. :)

I have 4 Australian shepherds. They are extremely intelligent. My mini aussie Marley knows the English language and that's the truth. Full sentences Of all 4 dogs I've had him since he was 2months old. I talked to him all the time and still do. He's 8 years old now. Everyone says he's a human in a dogs body lolo. It took me a couple times to train him on the 7 basic commands and more. He dances when I say dance, rolls over, crawls, leave it, no barking, be nice and much more. he also knows hand signals so if he can't hear me and can only see me he can still follow commands. If I say Marley go get your blanket he will go get it. Or Marley let's go this way and I point he knows and does what I say. He's such a good boy. He never chewed up anything he wasn't supposed to, dug etc..I have had different breeds of dogs my whole life and Australian shepherds are definitely the smartest, sweetest and most easy to train.

yeah, if I pull out a leash my dogs just bark like crazy and follow us because they know we always put the leashes on before leaving, and that if they want to leave they need the leash first. That's the reason they get excited to see the leash because leash = walking, not door.
I also have a black tri Aussie and he’s still a puppy, but yet he can do just about anything BUT sit still. He’s very energetic, even with our big field there’s no slowing him down, he’s never tired XD

My Australian Sheperd is very intelligent as well she looks a lot like this dog. My dog is afraid of thunder and refuses to take a bath in water so I have to do the waterless shampoo. She tries so hard to talk to me She is a rescue dog so I do not know how she was treated before but she loves to be brushed and is a very calm and loving dog The one problem I have with her is she tries to herd my cats

We have an Australian Shepherd Dotty who is the smartest dog I’ve ever seen. Like she can understand simple basic conversations, if you said like on that show Lassie, Timmy is stuck in the well go and get him out, she would know what you said and go get him. It’s only certain dogs though, because we have a younger Australian Shepherd, her “sister,” who doesn’t follow what you say most of the time like she does and really doesn’t care. Dotty goes crazy when you blow bubbles and tries to pop every one, if you never have try that with your Australian Shepherd and see what they do. She also is absolutely terrified of taking a bath (and she’s given one every week by the dog groomer), when she thinks the Mobile Dog bath truck is there, she gets under the bed and trembles and shakes she is so scared until she is convinced that Melissa is not there lol.
First time i tried to put the towel on my aussies head, he jumped back and smacked it off before it even settled, lmao 😂 took him 10 seconds to get it out from under the towel, but he hesitated to dig at it and instead chose to push it with his snout because I've had to teach him not to dig at my blankets and sheets because he was putting holes in them when trying to move them around so i think that slowed him down, saw him lift a paw then think better of it. Used his paws to get the treat, and sat in front of me before walking to the door when i asked him if he wanted to go for a walk. He's 11 months old, they're smart dogs. I lived with a couple border collies for a couple years, he seems just as capable in most ways, he's just a little more stubborn and lower drive, though he's only half working line aussie so it's not a completely fair comparison.
Aussies don't need an intelligence test. Mine's smart, sneaky, crafty, and has a personality and a sense of humor. He smiles. He laughs when he sneaks down the hallway and jumps out at me when I come out of the bathroom. He thinks it's hilarious! Best of all, he senses when I'm in a rotten mood, and he knows how to make ME laugh!
He also know his boundaries. One time, ONE TIME, he crossed the line. It was Thanksgiving, and the spiral-sliced ham had been in the oven for over two hours. He could smell it, you know he could. When it was finally ready, I took it out, sliced it up, and arranged the pieces on a platter on the kitchen cutting board. Five minutes later, I saw "Luke-Dog" gently put his paws on the counter and EVER-SO-GENTLY take JUST ONE thin slice of ham, then haul his butt into his favorite corner "hiding spot."
How could we be mad about that? The whole family laughed, because that was just Lucas' personality!
The door thing looks like you've just raised her differently. Like she only expects go go out certain times of the day or for you to put on the leash first. We put on the leash in the hall by the front door so when we take the leash she'd probably automatically go into the hall by the door. (When she was younger, now she's old and doesn't want to go) Though we also have a (Dutch) cue... so not 100% sure what she would have done without the cue anymore.
If I leave my three yr old aussie-wheaton's leash where she can get it, it's a game, I say "goobye car" she carries it to the door and bounces the screen door open and runs to the car and sits .. I had to resort to getting several puzzles for her, or she gets bored and mopes.
Luckily she's not ever been destructive. I saw how your girl acted toward the box.. I bet she would have left it alone if you weren't there to say it was okay to have. They really have a conscience between right and wrong. My 15 year old russel runs off and my wheaton-aussie won't ever leave the yard, but to find her lil buddy after franticly wagging and vocalizing to tell me he wandered. Dang smart dogs even when mixed with a large terrier, best of both worlds!! The negatives of either breed is muted. Both of my dogs passed the test btw, I'm not sure whose more clever, it's a circus around here!
The thing is that Australian Shepard’s are technically one of the smartest breeds, and I know because I have a Australian Shepard Puppy, but yeah. I just love Australian Shepard’s about how playful they are and there personality, their just so energetic and silly along with them having good looks. By the way...YOUR RED TRI IS SO PRETTY!!!! I have a Blue Merle! All of the colors of them are so pretty! Another thing I love about them is there eyes, their either a really pretty ocean blue or there two completely different colors! So yeah, just some facts and opinions about Aussies! ;)

Just out of curiosity, how did you teach her to only rip things up when she is on her bed? Looking at getting an Aussie and that seems to be a pretty valuable thing!
I know you were asking her. but, train your dog WORDS. First train them to listen, and that you are communicating. Aussies are brilliant! and if you are consistant with the words you use, the dog will know what you are saying to them. So to teach this, teach the word no. and Here. If you see your dog tearing up something, or found something they have tore up,take it and place it in the area that the dog is allowed such activity. When they begin to do it in the correct spot, simply praise them. If you teach them words, then you can communicate many things, without actually teaching each indicidual behavior. Hope you decided to get one! I simply LOVE the breed!!!! Got my newest puppy two days ago for my grandson!
