Safety Edge for Paving

  • When roadway paving leaves a dropoff (in non-curbed road sections), vehicles that leave the roadway can have difficulty regaining control and the result can be crossing the centerline when the driver over-corrects, with potentially catastrophic consequences (head on collision, in particular). Even when the pavement is backed with shoulder material, it can be soft or erode, leaving a vertical edge.
The Safety Edge is a safety countermeasure used in paving for such roads that allows the vehicle tire to more easily recover onto the road surface and make the transition back into the travel lane. It is now common in most states for such roadways, it is an inexpensive addition to the paver, and the durability of the unconfined edge has not been a problem when proper rolling techniques have been used.
The Delaware T2/LTAP Center provides direct technical assistance, training, and technology transfer to Delaware local agencies relative to their transportation challenges.
