Good info & yet another frustration point for me trying to integrate this discussion with load capacity & towing capacity to other RV-r's when camping. This is another reason most people overload their 1/2T pickups. It's difficult to convince them that it's an "and" situation; not a "or" situation. They think because the trailer is under the tow capacity then the other doesn't matter. State Weigh-masters could have a field day running all the RV's thru the scales and reading the tags on the receivers & door jams.
This is why I subscribed to this channel. The camper reviews are great but this type of content is arming me with the info I need for when I trade-up my camper as well as my tow vehicle. I feel more confident that I can go shopping for a truck and camper, knowing that I'm pairing them properly for safe towing.
Perfect timing! We are currently looking at a 22k dry weight travel trailer. I will be receiver shopping since the sticker is gone off of my cab chassis F550 receiver.

The 'Weight Carrying' and 'Weight Distribution' numbers are a result of a design of the truck or the receiver? Can I change my receiver and install something else to avoid having to use a weight distribution hitch? I have a 2000 F-250 SC 6.8 and the hitch has ratings of 10K w/ WDH otherwise it's a 5K tow capacity, seems a little low for a 3/4 ton truck.
JD thanks for putting this information out there. It can be very confusing. I was not aware of the manufactures designing their hitch's like this. I will need to do some more study on this issue to ensure I understand it fully. Thanks again.
Accurate info. No more than 3 hours ago I test drove a new truck with 9250 lb towing capacity but when I looked at the receiver it was limited to 8000 lbs.
Makes sense since there's still payload weight on top of that 8k. You can't just tow full capacity. It probably has a 1400-1600 lb payload. Now you're over 9250. With those numbers, you should max at a 6k dry weight camper and be in the 7-7500 range when packed up. Therefore, 8k is fine.
Other items that can reduce your tong weight. 1) a very heavy hitch. 2) the ratio of how far center of ball is from rear axle. I worked in a hitch shop. Person came in with a short box camper (8 feet of camper, 6 foot box of truck). This was a half ton truck. Camper was already near max weight, then he wanted to tow a boat was 2500lbs. Tong weight was about 200lbs, and he wanted a hitch extension to tow his trailer. We told him it was unsafe to tow, and the shop did not do the work. Another vehicle was a 2012 Dodge Grand caravan. He had a 1 1/4 inch receiver. Then he had a 2 inch adaptor. Finally he had a weight distribution hitch, towing a 3000 lb trailer. The trailer dealer sold the hitch extension, the weight distribution, and trailer. Said he would be ok. When he got it to the shop where i worked, He had bent the receiver hitch, and maybe the unibody of the van. The fix for that was to sell a new 2 inch receiver, and a lower waying weight distribution hitch.
Very important information JD! I'd love to see a video comparing the Class 3/4/5 factory hitch specs as well from the top 3 truck makers in their 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton versions. Also, some tech explanation on how much hitch weight is actually on the ball when using a WDH. I think your best explanation of a WDH in a prior video was the comparison to the handles of a wheel barrow. That alone was so beneficial to me. Thanks again!
One thing you almost touched upon with the tags, So close, but not quite there. Half Ton trucks have a much lower weight carrying number because the truck is designed to tow with a ball in the bumper itself, and the limit on most is 500 pounds, I believe GM is 700 pounds bumper weight. They transfer this capacity to the receiver as well since it is the design of the truck to only carry 500 or 700 pounds without a WDH. Medium Duty trucks don't use a ball in the bumper, they use a Class IV or V hitch to tow with, so there are no limitations at the Receiver. They can also carry more weight on the ball without upsetting the front axle steering and handling like what happens with half ton trucks. If you notice, most trailers towed by Medium Duty trucks don't use a WDH, the usual exception would be a Travel Trailer, but for the most part, trailers towed by MD class are dropped right on the ball. Drop that same trailer on a half ton, and the nose will be in the air and headlights lighting the way for comets, thus the reason for the lower weight for weight carrying on half tons.
Every new vehicle that I have seen tow uses a receiver. Half tons have a softer suspension and lighter axles, drivetrain etc. It has nothing to do with bumper towing
@@ryanhessler8966 You do know a base half ton without a tow package does not have a receiver, right? They have a hole in the bumper to attach a ball too. That is the limitation of the truck. It carries to the receiver when installed.
I bought two sets of two a set of two Intercompt PT300 digital truck scales through a military surplus auction hoping they would accomplish the same goal for tongue weights and loading. These are 20,000lb capacity each and weight me fairly accurately. Good luck!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure both of those are the same meaning. Its tounge weight which is different. Towing capacity might be that of the truck, and carrying capacity might be that of the hardware (receiver etc.)

Now, how many could you carry with your arms full extended? Weight impacts your vehicle dramatically different depending on how and where the weight is positioned.

A properly loaded 6 x 12 enclosed is less likely to sway than a heavily loaded to the rear flatbed trailer, A horse trailer is far less likely to sway empty or loaded than a mid axle travel trailer. A horse trailer is probably one of the easiest towing trailers I ever towed loaded or empty. The axle placement puts the weight of the horses directly over them for a well balanced trailer, and empty guarantees more weight up front than in the rear. Sway is all about where the weight is placed with the axles, more weight in front, less likely to sway, regardless of length of trailer. Now BACKING, thats a different story! ☺
Anxiously awaiting the pin weight comparisons to what the manufactures say they are. Always wondered if the Oem's may fudge the numbers just to advertise the 5th wheel as 3/4 ton capable. I realize it would be a pain but would love to see the difference possibly on your own 5th wheel of dry pin weight compared to loaded ready to camp pin weight. On my 2011 F-250, the Ford sticker gives both 2 1/2 inch and 2 inch reducer weight limits. The limits with a reducer are about 75% of what the 2 1/2 inch receiver can handle alone.
Upgraded to a curt 20,000lb trailer, 2800lb tounge weight hitch. the factory 2017-2021 Ford hitch was annoying at best with its tiny hook holes and low 1500 tounge weight rating. 2017 f350 SRW.

I have a Ram and wanted to know what I could tow. I went to their web site and found towing weights. Put my serial number in and it said what I could tow, but didn't say what the hitch itself was capable of. Not sure if there is a sticker or not on mine.
Alot of new hitches will have a max trailer weight, max tongue weight, and max ball weight(if you can change balls) on a sticker usually on the front. used that alot

Thanks for another instructional video on towing capacities and hitches. Question: my SUV did not come with a towing package. I found an after market tow bar specifically made for my Outback. It is bolted on, and that worries me a lot. Bolts snap, although I will never be towing more than 1,000 including the weight of the trailer. What are your thoughts on bolted on tow bars?
Random question that the hitch commentary brought to mind. Would you recommend going with the 3” hitch (believe this is only available on F350 and F450 currently), or go with the 2.5” and use the adapter Ford provides? Thinking there will be way less rattle with the 3”, but will only fit a superduty - not planning to change trucks, but...
So for the numbers on the receiver if the numbers are greater compared to the numbers on what the manufacturer says on like the towing brochure of that company should you follow the weight of what the manufacturer says or the receiver if the receiver reads higher?

Long time viewer question- Do you think a ram 3/4 T needs weight distribution with a travel trailer that has 900lb tongue weight and 7300 GVWR? Would prefer to get a weigh safe hitch like you have that works for both boat and trailer.
I once saw a one ton chevy pulling a 60' geni arial boom lift on a trailer with a pintle receiver hitch. Not saying it was safe. The hitch was dragging on the ground. 😂 Just saying trucks aren't made out of glass. They're tougher than the numbers on the door say they are.

Can a weight distribution hitch cut the weight in half????? For example if I have a camper with a hitch weight of 1000lbs. Will a distribution hitch make it 500lbs ? Tow vehicle is 2021 Chevy Silverado High Country with 3.0 diesel.
Well, it doesn't really cut the weight, it moves the weight and changes the forces applied to the hitch and receiver. In some cases it pulls weight off the receiver but puts more on the hitch head itself. It create a bowing effect.
Owners manuals tend to have the information since the hitch is usually the same on all 1500s, then again the same on say all 2500s, all 3500s, etc of a given brand/year
@@BTBRVReviews not always the best idea. Lots of misinformation out there. I always try to go to the primary resources first, owners/service manuals. Then resort to Google if it comes down to it.
VIN lookup at a dealer to find out what tow package was installed would be the only way to truly know. With Ford's up until recently, there were three different receivers ranging from 10,200 pounds to 13,200 pounds, only the VIN can tell what was installed.
Hey JD. Always love your videos. One question about the weights specifically to multi-axle trailers. I own 3 trailers myself. We have a 36' Sunnybrook Brookside 5th wheel, 22' flat bed car hauler (tandem axle) and then a small single axle utility trailer. On multi axle trailers, I would be curious to find out if the tongue/pin weight changes if it is not towed level? My theory is that if you are towing a tandem axle higher (lifted truck without drop hitch), then the weight on the pin or tongue would be greater. Is this true? I see so many trucks out there towing that are lifted and they are sagging really bad, but the trailer is level. If they used the proper drop hitch, I think the weight would still make the truck sag but not nearly as much. Is this something that you can confirm with the scale or have you run into this before? Thanks in advance!
I don’t care if I’m overloading anything. If it pulls it without dragging my exhaust on the ground. I drive an 03 3/4 ton Duramax and I regularly pull 30,000 plus pounds. I don’t know for sure but I think the pickup is only rated for something like 15,000. But then I’m a farmer and I’m not Mr Safety

I have a neighbor who thinks his tow capacity is what the car can pull 3500lbs plus his hitch weight. I'm like no, it doesnt work that way....

On my 2004 f250 with the factory hitch the W/D is 12,500 with a tongue weight of 1250lbs and W/C of 5000 with a tongue weight of 500lbs

Actually it's pretty common. The receiver hole breaks away from the body. Most of the time it's not a complete failure though.
