    As a retired truck driver, I can’t express how much you need to do a pre-trip inspection. You might’ve noticed differences if before every time you traveled you actually looked at the suspension not busting you all I can say is I drove a tractor trailer for 25 years, keep your videos coming I am subscribed

      Flatbedder here and to add to what the previous person said making a habit of walking around will help you notice when things start to look different and may be the difference between a $100 fix and a $1000 fix. We know these trailers aren't exactly heavy duty but it's just a good step to add to keep ahead of things. Safe travels.

    I have a 2018 Solitude 310GK, several weeks ago I installed my 3rd set of leaf springs since the trailer was new. My first set had poorly constructed spring eyes and the bronze bushings were deformed when the trailer was almost new. I caught the issue while fixing greasy brakes when I got the trailer home from the dealership 400 miles away. I am a professional mechanic (semi-retired) so I just fixed it on my dime. After 5 years my leaf springs were looking like they had lost their arch and were flat. My springs were 6 leaf 3500 lb capacity. I replaced the springs with 7 leaf 4000 lb capacity springs to try and make them last longer. The 7 leaf springs have a longer second leaf that fully supports the main leaf (the one that broke on your trailer) 3500 lb springs are relatively inexpensive but the 4000 lb springs are about 3 times as much. I noticed that your new springs have nylon bushings in the spring eyes. The nylon bushings don't typically last very long in heavy trailers. Your factory springs should have come with bronze bushings in the spring eyes and they need to be greased often to last. They are pretty easy to add to your new existing springs. You should also inspect your springs eyes on the other side of the trailer. You might be surprised at how much wear the bushings will have.

      Morryd sells a heavy duty shackle kit with wet bolts, this gives you double thickness shackles and a bolt with a zerk fitting so you can easily regrease the bolt without any disassembly.

    • @davecamilleri9411
      @davecamilleri9411 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I installed the heavy duty Morryde shackles on my Solitude when it was brand new. It already had wet bolts at the equalizer, but had solid bolts with bronze bushings on the fixed ends of the springs. I replaced those with wet bolts also since the bronze bushings need grease. I also had the Morryde shackle kit on my last 5th wheel and they are great quality.@@andrewfidel2220

    • @CHRnorton
      @CHRnorton 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have never seen car or pickup truck springs break, So why not get springs for a car or truck, even used ones from a pick and pull yard. Even if you couldn't find ones that fit right in, you could modify the mounts/ brackets to let you fit most any type of spring in. I've never had to grease auto or pickup truck springs. grease. So they seem up to the job.

    • @davecamilleri9411
      @davecamilleri9411 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need to have wet bolts installed. A wet bolt is a bolt with a hole drilled through the center and another hole about halfway down the bolt and a Zerk fitting to allow grease to be applied. A lot of upper end 5th wheel trailers are installing these from the factory. These fittings need to be greased every 500-1000 miles to make the bushings last.@@johnaz1018

    Very smart move replacing both leaf springs, always replace in pairs. The next move is to replace the other side springs! You always want to match spring ratings on both sides. Matching the springs is critical to how your RV tows behind your truck. Here’s a big question for you guys, do you weigh your RV to ensure that you aren’t overloading your rig? Too much weight can play havoc with your rig’s suspension. Be safe in your travels and take care ❤

    I'm in Texas. When I need service on the frame/suspension/wheels of my RV, I take it to a company that builds/sells livestock trailers.
    These guys are serious businessmen and do great work. No, they can't tune your TV or shine your chandelier, but they can fix the
    serious parts under your trailer, right, the first time. Most RV dealers aren't that good at service. Since I travel mostly in the summer,
    I usually have them check it in the spring. This spring, they replaced a lot of worn bolts and tightened every fastener on the chassis.
    Also had the brake controller replaced and all trailer wiring checked out. Before I head out for my next trip, it's tire time!

    You should do all four leaf springs.
    Leaf spring metal fatigue is very real, they are constantly flexing. As many miles you
    have on they trailer I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.
    Alaska I'm sure really did a job on them.
    I'm a retired mechanic, I would most definitely do all of them. They have all gone
    to the same places.
    You guys were lucky the front of the leaf didn't brake, it would have done more damage.
    Be safe please have all replaced.

I've been a mechanic all my life (nearing retirement). I wish I could haul all my tools and jacks with us everywhere we go but that's not feasible. Driving from PDX to AZ we go I-5 thru Sacramento. For the last several years; by far the worst stretch of road we travel. ALWAYS under construction, full of sharp zig-zags and potholes big enough to sink or 30' trailer. Been to the east Coast & back & nor roads as bad as Sacramento!

    @kenttalcott8428 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I am not a mechanic but have replaced/upgraded leaf springs on a few trailers and cars. I am a DIY'er all day. While yes this is a feasible DIY roadside repair do not underestimate how easy it looks when someone with proper tools and experience are doing the work. Remember, there is some danger whenever one is prying on rusted bolts with their body under a trailer that is only supported by a jack that relies on a narrow base and/or fluid and "O" rings to keep you safe. Make sure to use all four trailer supports in addition to a jack on the suspension parts. "Unattached" jack stands and hydraulic jacks do fail from time to time and the consequences can be fatal. About 5-10K people a year are seriously injured when performing work on a car that is supported by a jack. Trailer carries the same risk. Also, an old rusted bolt on the suspension of anything can be difficult to remove without the proper tools. One could spend hours of frustration trying to remove one stubborn bolt that seriously takes seconds to remove with a proper tool (ie impact gun, breaker bar, etc). If you plan on carrying an extra leaf spring to install on the road you need to equip yourself with proper tools to make the repair quick, successful, and safe. If you have the skills great and good on you. If not, call the mobile techs and enjoy a glass of wine in a chair while they fix the trailer properly.

    We had an incident with our toad on I-10 in the middle of Tucson, AZ during rush hour(s?)... a LONG way from home. Our tow bar mount failed on our Jeep and when we got stopped all that was left was ONE safety cable! We found a repair shop who was an advertiser in the RV Park brochure we received about 15 minutes later at check-in and verified with the office that they were good people. They were LIFESAVERS! They had the parts overnighted, worked us in and sent us on our way. RV travel is stressful, but that's just life. Your RV doesn't have it in for you... Try to stay positive and keep a good attitude. OH! and do a pre-flight check EVERY time you move.

    Because of your advice, I've been able to get a mobile tech to come out and assess all of the things wrong with my NEW 2024 RV. The water heater was incorrectly installed and the HVAC in the living area does not work. There are a slew of other issues, 17 in all, and we had to get Forest River to agree to the repairs. Two mobile techs are coming out Monday and Tuesday to hopefully get things fixed so that I can finally move in. The RV has been here since last September. The tech, Tim, has 40 years of experience and has lived in a 5th wheel for 10 years. Hopefully! Finally! Thanks for your advice. I follow you faithfully!

    I would say the initial cost of the service call and hourly rate for labor is very common. Glad they took care of you. Another thing that will ruin your day is tire failure, and it's common with travel trailers. The tires the manufacturers put on are trash, I have replaced mine with heavy duty 14 ply Hercules steel wall tires.

    i could go on a lil more but you get the idea, not only is the above something they "should have" done but they also should have asked if you wanted it done?? it is a huge peace of mind knowing these above points have been done and now you have these items checked off your maint list..... it's your hard earned $$$$ 🤠

    Good job at changing both leaf springs on the axle. I tend to change all leaf springs, equalizers, shackles, bolts, and u-bolts for peace of mind, because when one component fails, I’ve found that others are soon to follow.
    Also, when replacing leaf springs; you need the eye to eye measurement, the front eye to center pin measurement, the width of the leaf pack, the number of leaves, and the weight rating of the leaf pack.
    I have a rig (Ambulance) that was converted from air ride suspension to a leaf suspension. The shop that completed the conversion did not get the front eye to center pin measurement, which moved the axle forward about an inch to an inch and a half. This caused the driveline to bind which led to a lot of expensive reared and transmission repairs…
    A simple measurement cause thousands of dollars of damage to the previous owner.
    We all learn as we go. I’m sure that you’ll add this to a pre/post trip walk around inspection 😉
    Thank you for Awesome videos and keep up the good work 😊

    Great video guys. Big thing to remember when considering weight capacity it is not just the springs. Other things that have to be considered is axle capacity, tire and speed and weight capacity, but most importantly you have remember your frame is only meant to handle a certain amount of weight. As you get closer to that rating the torque put on the metal and the welds increases and with a hard enough jolt and surpass those ratings. Keep the great videos coming.

    Just an FYI. Almost any utility trailer dealer/repair shop will do your springs for you. They will most likely have the springs on hand and will be cheaper then a mobile tech. Also, I agree you should do a walk-around every time you stop. After getting fuel, eating lunch, stopping for a stretch, etc. I happy for your washer purchase. We have had ours for a couple years and love it. You will get some error codes from time to time but don't worry it is usually nothing. The manual will tell you how to clear them. Keep up the great videos. You Hanks know how to entertain.

    We are full-time and have been down the same road with our suspension system. During a rough patch of road our suspension equalizer articulated up to the frame and broke the hanger and bent the frame. To try and NOT have that happen again, we installed a Lippert Center Point Suspension System (replaces the equalizer with air bags) and Sumo springs. We also had the welder (per Lippert Techs....I know...) add 3/16 2x2 crossmembers between each hanger to add lateral support to the frame and hangers. That was 2 years and 10k miles ago. All has been well since. You might also consider new wet bolts with brass inserts and your hangers should have 2 pieces of steel welded inside the hanger to add support. Let me know if you need pics :)

    You really need to consider having a jack and an impact wrench to change a flat tire. The retail price for your entire leaf spring kit is about 100 dollars and they couldn't be any more simple to swap. Amazon even has them in stock. Full timers really need to learn how to do their own repairs, however many people would rather just watch someone else do it. Watching is fine as long as you don't mind paying. Great video!

    I CALLED IT!! See my comment in part 1! Anyhow, I recommend anyone who tows their 5ver frequently, is above GVWR, etc needs to upgrade the entire system (leafs, shackles, hangers, and add a lateral crossmember)! The crossmember is MANDATORY if you frequently travel rough roads and/or make lots of u turns or backing into tight spots or parking spaces while jackknifing the tow vehicle-ESPECIALLY WITH triple axle 5th wheels.

    I had to replace my Dexter axle (for the second time) after my big midwest trip last year, along with a set of tires. No leaf springs on mine. At some point during the trip, the axle failed, and I only caught it by looking at the tires.
    The funny part was when I contacted Dexter about it, since they have a lifetime warranty. They claimed that it wasn't covered--and then sent me a new axle for free, anyway.

    You were so lucky to find these mobile techs. It was a big job for sure. At least you could sleep peacefully at night knowing that the issue has been resolved. These roads are horrible - our Morryde Independent Suspension needs to get an alignment every year or we will tear up tires! See you on the road!

    Great work, thanks! I'm slowly collecting spare parts to hopefully minimize any potential down time. Even if you find someone to work on it parts might not be readily available. I have 2 spare tires (and yes, I used both on one trip), spare shackles,shackle bolts (I have seen some trailers with loose or missing bolts) and a right and left brake assembly. Next on the list is a leaf spring and hub/bearing assembly.

    Since you increased your spring rate on one side of your rig, make sure to check the center to center measurement on your axle. Stiffer springs will move the axle centers apart resulting in abnormal tire wear. My trailer weighs more on the drivers side and I added a leaf to my new spring set (making the driver side springs 4000#) and installed 3500's on the passenger side. Changed the axle center to center by 0.50" and now they are aligned. My Goodyear Endurance tires lasted 10K miles and were shot before swapping springs. Now tire wear is even and fingers crossed I get more than 10K on this set.

    Fifty years ago when I was a kid the leaf spring on my family's pop up camper broke while on a trip. Of course it happened on a weekend, and the temporary fix was welding things back together until we could get back home and get a replacement spring. My dad was a mechanic and this drove him batty!

    Might be a good idea to upgrade your shackles and bolts to wet bolts with the thicker shackles. This is one of the biggest suggestions we have been told many times and learned in rv tech training as to why. Next time you have your bearings done (at least 1x a year) you could also have this done

    Very good vid and info one thing. Wd 40 is originally made as water displacement and that was the 40th formulation. We used it years ago on engines with distributors. Moisture git in distributer cap, vehicle would not start. So take the dist cap off and turn over then sprayed wd 40 in cap and on rotor, put together n start vehicle did not wipe out / off wd40. But it is not a good penetrating oil. The 2 good ones. Best is Kroil Amazon or other places, used my most mechanics. I just got it from Amazon. Some home depot Lowes Walmart and some auto parts stores. Just more expensive so harder to find. The next best is PB blaster. Home depot lowes Walmart etc. I have revived many pliers and rachets in socket sets that were rusted and got free with Kroil.that is a penetrating oil. Pb blaster is a penetrant and also lubricatir. So when I have revived a tool then I spray it with pb blaster and no problems since. The other thing as a master ASE mechanic you went fro. 3000 lb springs to 3500 or 3600 lb springs on one side. You will prob feel as you drive esp on rougher roads the left side. Drivers side will do more bouncing than the right ( passenger side) I would have considered replacing all 4 springs so the trailer will " bounce" equally and not more on one side and less on the other. The problem I see with this is more trailer frame flex I stead of trailer handling road bounce equally drivers side will bounce more than pass side so will go to the 5th wheel since that is not on a pivot type connection. Like a bumper pull will. The hitch can float / flex over / across the ball. With the 5th wheel your pin does not flex so the flexinggoes back to flexing the trailer frame. May want to consider doing other side springs. Love your travels and adventures. Stay safe

    I had to watch the video a second time to see if what was said in another comment was right and it blew me away that they were right that they only changed the right side only and I’m wondering why when you lose a spring and have to go with a upgrade they should have loaded the axle the same on both sides so you don’t have a towing issue or a weight distribution issue that can cause a pulling issue like it’s out of alignment, if I was in California and with their crappie roads I would probably look to have the other 2 done because the old saying is everything always come in pairs so now that you have seen it somehow you can save money and as you said with a few tools you can do it you self, love you guys and the effort you do to keep us informed. Thanks hanks

    Really enjoy your videos! We are fellow Pennsylvanians, with a home base in the Pocono Mountains. My wife and I have been travailing all over North America in travel trailers for the past years. This was a very informative video. Yes your leaf springs are what supports all the weight in your RV, and they can be overloaded. Especially if your heavier on one side of the RV vs the other. We are not full-timers, but I am always concerned about what my real world weight is on each wheel and on my hitch. Leaf springs do tend to fail over time just from the constant stress.

    This is not the first video I have seen with broken leaf springs, I am definitely going to get a set to keep on hand. I usually carry a jack and some tools. As for the coffee I gave up cream and sugar years ago when I was boarder line diabetic, I changed my diet started exercising and and taking daily vitamin, and fish oil supplements. every time i go get checked i am back in the normal range for sugars and triglycerides. Most of my sugar was from the 6 cups of coffee a day and a lot of pasta. I hope you get to go down to San Diego I loved it there.

    I use a local mobile mechanic here in Fl. I had him come out recently and inspect axles, springs, roof etc and then had him do maintenance/upgrades that I have not had the time to do myself. It cost $500, if I had brought the RV to the dealer it would have been closer to $1000, if not over that.

    I own a 2013 solitude and have probably put about 20,000 miles on it. This year before making our yearly 3 month trip to Florida I plan to change mine. Very easy job. Kyle you might consider getting you a bottle jack and carry you a piece of 2 by 6 board to place it on if you use it. You two travel a whole lot and having tools along with TH-cam can save you some trouble.

    Very serious topic for those pulling 5th wheelers and Trailers. I will say, you absolutely picked a couple of good mobile service tech's. You showed that they used Snap-on Hand Tools (hammer, hand ratchets, sockets) with a Snap-on High Torque Electric Ratchet. Those were all well worn, and those tools were helping them make the monthly payments on that GMC work truck for sure. They did a nice job explaining the Why/What/How and based on the video, and they did the "extra" things experienced tech's know to do. It is not a complicated job, however, the inexperienced can quickly do more damage to their towable rigs and themselves if they do not have previous experience. Hope the new Power Jack Heights will work out better for you guys! #leterrip

    I am also a retired truck driver, and it pays to do a pre-trip every time you move, or if are in travel mode, the start of every day. Also, have you weighed your trailer since adding washer/dryer and any other stuff? You might ought to check it and make sure you are not overloaded. 41 years of over the road here.
