Yeah I was actually hoping the 167 orange one would be less stable. It'll probably be a ripper with a bit of wear but it definitely wasn't linear with the other lighter ones
Thanks for the field testing, I think the bottom line is that general guidelines aren't always absolutes, and the proof for any given mold is in the throwing. Unfortunately I rarely have more than 2 of a given mold! I would like to try one of the lighter eagles😀
I think that's a great point. It's also a great reason to keep buying more discs 😆 I had a 157 Shryke for years that was as stable as this max weight Wraith, sometimes you just gotta throw it to know 🤷 Got you down for the giveaway, good luck!
Thanks for starting a good investigation of impact of different weights of discs (and for including 2 different speeds of discs while doing it). I know you saw some minor trends, but I also noticed some release variations. There were a few discs released on slightly more hyzer than others so they didn't have a chance to flip up fully. But worse than that, there were a number of throws released on a much lower line than others, which didn't let them fully flex out and fade back. I'd recommend doing the exact same throws at least 2 or 3 more times, to find a more average set of data for each disc. Additionally, I noticed you always started with the lightest. Try a few rounds starting with the heaviest. (I find when I throw 5 discs in a row, my final throws are usually a little better, so that gave advantage to heavier discs in your throws). For me, a Star Destroyer is currently my go-to driver for most longer holes. But I don't feel I'm quite at a 12 speed arm yet. I'm RH forehand dominant, and there's pretty much always wind when I play so overstable is important. I'd love to bag a 170g+ Wraith.
Yeah, human error is always going to be a part of it, which is why it's nice to have a whole community looking over things such as you mentioned. Unless maybe we get that guy that built the disc launcher to test it all for us haha Those are some good ideas, I'll incorporate some of that in future videos! Good luck with the giveaway- as another RHFH player who leans on Destroyers, I can tell you that you'll most likely looove heavier Wraiths as well. Great compliments to one another
Hey brother perfect timing all I've thrown for the last 15 years is a wraith 171 I would love try a wraith 167. I was questioning the difference in weight ratio yesterday thank you for answering my questions
such consistency and dedication to the 171 wraith, I love it! #wraithgang Good luck on landing this 167, I think it would be an interesting disc to see get beaten in over time bc right now it seems pretty stable (as far as 167 wraiths go)
Thanks for the test! I have found very similar results in my testing. I prefer 167-173 fairways and max weight distance drivers. Mainly because I don't rip my fairways hard enough to really turn them over (just throw them max of 80%) so I can keep them in the lighter weight to get that touch more distance in the woods. And then max weight in the distance drivers for the consistency and stability. I would take a either the 167 eagle or the max weight wraith! Thanks for the chance!
I would wager that the reason you saw different results with the eagles is that the eagle is a lower speed disc, this means it doesn't require the same armspeed, so you may hit that armspeed to get full flight on it even at max weight, while Caleb who from what I can see has a slower armspeed will be a bit closer to the required speed on the lighter ones compared to the heavier ones. In regards to the distance it's mostly just gonna be a wash with weight... a lighter disc will come out of the hand a little faster, but since it has less mass the momentum won't really be any higher and it will be more affected by air resistance. In short, it will loose it's speed faster. A heavier disc may not come out of the hand as fast, but it has more mass so that means it's likely to still have a higher or similar momentum... All in all it's pretty much a wash, max weight goes just as far as light discs, unless wind is a factor in which case a lighter disc can get carried further in a tailwind, but conversely also slowed down faster in a headwind.
If one wants to get really in-depth about it you can just calculate the momentum for a lightweight and max-weight disc my multiplying the mass with the speed. But beyond that it starts to become more complicated... A disc flying through the air will for example create lift, which is basically an upwards force, this force will have a bigger effect on a lighter disc, but that lighter disc again will lose it's speed and rotation faster and without air flying over the disc that force becomes lesser. So doing the actual real math would be super complicated, but all in all I'm pretty confident in saying it doesn't really make a difference
yeah, it reminds me of my old 157 Shryke I used to throw. It looked like it was absolutely ripping down the fairway for the first 80% of its flight then it just kinda hovered and fell out of the sky. Versus a heavier weight one that looked slower but kept pushing down the fairway
There is a whole segment of disc golf players (like me) that don't have the arm speed for high-speed or heavy discs. Plus, I live at high altitude (Denver) which makes everything more stable anyway. I get the most distance and best results from lighter discs (drivers and fairways < 150, mids 150-160, putters 160-170). I don't think the wind effect on lighter discs is that great either. You just make the same adjustments you do with any disc - more stable into the wind, less stable with it. I love my 148g Star Eagle, but with my arm speed, it's the most overstable fairway in my bag.
It would have been interesting to test at lower arm speed as well, but the hope was by showing 2 different arm speeds throwing these we could extrapolate both up and down- because there's also a lot of people that throw a lot farther than us. But that's interesting to hear, especially about mids and putters. I wonder if it's because I'm near sea level or something, but even the guys I play with that top out around 250 still prefer heavier mids and putters. The variability of disc golf is one of the things I love about it, it's interesting to hear how others approach the game 👍
I have a couple wraiths but for some reason I have never thrown an eagle always thought they were a little too stable for my arm but I am getting close to the 350 mark and I loved the flight I think I need to give one a try now
I've found wraith stability to be very sensitive to weight. Which is great for folks who want to bag only one driver covering many slots. I keep a 150g wraith in the bag for huge tailwinds and throwing up very steep hills.
I don't know if I'd go as far as to put anything in the 150's in my bag ever. But to get maybe a little more high-speed flip out of the box, I would venture into the 160's. High-speed difference in weight was probably the most notable, like you mentioned, but I think that makes sense with how the line can be drawn between "distance" drivers and "fairway/control". Was a fun experiment!
Hey cool video! I think I would really enjoy that 171 purple wraith as it seems to have a little more turn in it. It seemed like there was a definite increase in stability for both discs, especially when Caleb threw them. As for the weights all being from the same run, I'm wondering if different weights get ran at different times or at least under different machine parameters? It would seem like something has to change. But the blue and orange wraiths seemed to be total opposite ends of the spectrum. I've got an orange 167 wraith that flip up nicely lol
thanks and good luck! That's a good point about different weights being run at different times- I'm not sure how disc manufacturers space production of weights, but that's a good theory
Thanks for the comparison. I'd like to see the same test done with a mechanical launcher inside a warehouse/dome to eliminate the variations in throw and wind. I'll take on of those Eagle's of your hands.
I've always wondered about the weights and how much it matters. I've heard also that if you have the strength, it's better to throw a heavier disc. If I win the giveaway, I'd like an Eagle, please. Thanks for the content!
This video got sent to me via the algorithm today, and I'm glad it did! Great content, loved the video. Time to binge a new disc golf channel... And I'd love to fling that max weight eagle.
Really enjoyed this video, interesting results for sure. I lean heavier for my discs due to what I feel are stable based on how I throw. Would love to get a hand on one of those heavier wraiths. Thanks for sharing guys! Great video!

this was a cool test; i've had bad experiences with lightweight discs, but that's probably just because i didn't think to modify anything about my form when throwing them. i bag a wraith and an eagle currently, and would absolutely bag another of either. i would want a less stable eagle (currently have a beefy champion) and would want a more stable wraith (have a star that loves trees a bit too much). mostly i want an eagle that flies like calvin's does, but that might be asking a bit too much 😋
Thanks and good luck! That wraith would be my choice of driver from the bunch as well, had a good amount of turn but was still heavy enough to push through wind
Eagle - I have a 150g Eagle and a 175g Eagle. I do notice a difference in the flight so I’d say the science is correct, lighter weight disc are easier to turn 😄
Good luck on the giveaway, maybe you can add one in the middle 👍 I definitely noticed the difference with the Wraiths, I think it might have been more pronounced since I was throwing over the "speed threshold" for the Eagles anyway. Which might explain why Caleb saw more of a difference
Great video! Really enjoyed the content. I've never thrown an eagle, but after watching you throw them I would love to give one of those a try for sure. That 167 Eagle Would be a great addition for my bag. I would love to see a video comparing similar discs but from different companies to try to solve the "which company is better" question. Thanks!
Thanks for the encouragement and suggestions, that sounds like a fun idea! That 167 Eagle was my favorite disc of the entire group as well, best of luck bringing it home
Well the Eagle is a 7 speed and the Wraith is an 11 speed. Like I said, I don't really hear of people throwing lightweight mids or putters, but it might be an interesting thing to test. Good luck on the drawing!
i have a 167 gram Eagle that keeps telling me that it wants to be in the bag. I anticipated a stable fairway, but i’ve found that it’s mostly a neutral disc. I would LOVE a 164-168 Star Eagle to keep the 167 Infuse Star Eagle company…. ps, the infuse star is really Domey. Nice video.. i’m also finding that my low 160’s discs fly similarly to 166-169, and they’re harder to find. Now i’m back to hunting 165-168g as a findable sweet spot
I would love to try a Champ Eagle. Flight looks great! I would also love to see review videos highlighting lesser known disc manufacturers. Mint Discs comes to mind.
Eagles don’t typically fly like the first guy threw them, he was leaning into those shots heavily and against a headwind. Eagles are typically very stable, one would say even more stable than a teebird. But nonetheless, the Eagle is a very very underrated great disc, it’s basically a shorter destroyer.
Mint is one of our specialties in the shop! We've got a couple disc reviews for them and next week we should have our Phoenix review posted 👍 Thanks for the feedback and good luck!
I miss my 149g blizzard wraith, that was a hyzer flip machine, so fun to throw bombs with even when I was a noodle arm Now I've got my eye on that 175g Eagle, looks like it could be a good compliment to my Barsby
@@ArmoryDiscGolf The '22 Barsbys seem to be the perfect level of workable stability, and I think its going to beat in well. Been thinking to get a more overstable eagle to pair with it since its going to see a lot of use.
Keep using the phone camera. It looks better. I think I'm too new to the game to know which disc I'd prefer, or would work best for me. I never win anything anyway.
thanks for the input! For a beginner I'd recommend one of these light to mid weight Eagles, I think anyone can get a lot of use out of them forehand and backhand
Ive got a dx wraith 170 it's chewed up a little bit but the wraith has always been a favorite of mine but i also have a gstar katana 149 you'd think it's Flippy 13 5 -3 3 but it beams flat forhand and half the time goes farther than my wraith also i probably throw between 160 and 225 feet on average i believe
@@ArmoryDiscGolf my wonder/guess would be that at your arm speed, you’re getting full flight out of pretty much all the eagles and not seeing a considerable difference in the 7 speed disc. With the Wraith you begin to notice a bit more variation as the disc speed jumps. Also curious if you’d see more variance with a more neutral disc like a 0/1 or -1/1
I think that's highly likely the case, because as mentioned in the video Caleb _did_ see a bit of difference in stability with the Eagles. Had I known it would have gone like this I definitely would have grabbed a more understable disc, but when buying them I fully expected the 150 class Eagle to be wayyy flippier. I'll revisit this in a later video because it would be interesting to compare a few other things like you said
@@ArmoryDiscGolf I notice a significant difference in my Infinite Centurions from max weight down to those in the low 160’s and a slight difference in the Infinite Exodus (the old Eagle L mold) - but my arm speed is also slower than yours. Great stuff!

The giveaway has happened on this one, all those Eagles have found new homes. Idk if you want to stick with Eagles specifically, but the C Line FD1 from Discmania could also be a good option in that slot if you want more stability than what you're getting from whatever Eagle you've currently got 👍

Fascinating results. The similarities between the eagles and big jump in stability to the 3 heavier wraiths was the big standouts to me. Thanks Nick

i have a 167 gram Eagle that keeps telling me that it wants to be in the bag.
Now i’m back to hunting 165-168g as a findable sweet spot
it's bittersweet to find that exact disc you like because then it's hard to replace/find another JUST like it
I would love to try a Champ Eagle.
We've got a couple disc reviews for them and next week we should have our Phoenix review posted 👍 Thanks for the feedback and good luck!
yeah, to your point even a 154 Eagle on anny into a headwind still managed to fight out of it haha. They're slept on for sure
@@ArmoryDiscGolf thanks!
I'd love to give the 157g Eagle a try :)
got you down, good luck! it's a great disc
surprising seeing the Eagles fly so similar! I'd take an Eagle if I won!
Got you down for one, good luck! I was also surprised, I think that there may be more variation if they weren't being thrown as hard
I miss my 149g blizzard wraith, that was a hyzer flip machine, so fun to throw bombs with even when I was a noodle arm
Now I've got my eye on that 175g Eagle, looks like it could be a good compliment to my Barsby
it WAS a lot fun to throw those flippy wraiths. The Barsbys are more stable, right?
@@ArmoryDiscGolf The '22 Barsbys seem to be the perfect level of workable stability, and I think its going to beat in well. Been thinking to get a more overstable eagle to pair with it since its going to see a lot of use.
the Barsby Eagles look sweet too. Sounds like a win win to me
I'd love to try the 164g Eagle

171 wraith! great video
Thanks! Got you down, good luck
If I won, id want the heaviest Wraith you have.
got you down, good luck!
I'm also a big Wraith fan. Katanas are slept on, GG bombs those things in distance championships year in and year out haha
@@ArmoryDiscGolf how would you rate each of innovas plastics stability?
@@77zarick champion, Star, GStar, pro, DX from most to least stable
I got a gstar 167g wraith recently it has a higher plh then the highest part of the dx one and it does fly further for me by a noticable amount
100% enjoyable, send me an Eagle!
got you down, good luck!
love a good lighter weight eagle - mid 160’s seems to be a sweet spot 👌🏼
that 167 Eagle was my favorite disc of the bunch 👍
I would like to win a wraith honestly because I've always wanted to try one. And some lsd content would be sick. Hopefully y'all make it out to circle one tournament
We love Lone Star! Super pumped about trying out the Copperhead when they release
@@ArmoryDiscGolf I want to try that and the lone wolf really bad, seems like an lsd lobster
@@theodoreroseveltadept5272 that's exactly that I thought when I saw it. I LOVE my Lobster so it'll be interesting to see them compete
@@ArmoryDiscGolf yeah my buddy uses his constantly and I saw your video on it but I gotta hold out for the lsd lol
@@theodoreroseveltadept5272 won't be long!
I'd love to huck a sidearm Eagle! Great vid guys!
Thanks and good luck! I was really pleased with how the Eagles felt and flew sidearm as well 👍

@@ArmoryDiscGolf Awesome! Thank you, I messaged you on IG!
First video I've seen from you and the first thought was "woooaah buddy... if you're going to film outside, invest in a higher quality personal microphone."

Any video you make should include drawn flight paths or discs thrown at camera POV. I would like to win a soft Berg.
thanks for the feedback, best of luck!
i would love to have one of the eagle.
got you down, good luck!
Same music has the "in the bag podcast"?
Oh that's interesting, guess we source it from the same place
Would love a 160 g Eagle for my Son
Best of luck! Eagle seems like a great disc to learn forehand and backhand with
I'm still trying to find one that has stability so I would like to win a eagle & try one out
The giveaway has happened on this one, all those Eagles have found new homes. Idk if you want to stick with Eagles specifically, but the
C Line FD1 from Discmania could also be a good option in that slot if you want more stability than what you're getting from whatever Eagle you've currently got 👍
175 wraith
classic 👍 good luck!
I would love to win EAGLE MCMAHON CREATOR SERIES SPECIAL BLEND S-LINE CLOUD BREAKER from your website link since he is my favorite player! The eagle in the video is very interesting to see how it flew and still learning so much about disc golf and been playing very casually for 2 summers now. Knowledge videos like this helps out especially me lol
best of luck! I really enjoyed throwing these Eagles as well. The Eagles and Wraiths are the ones eligible for the giveaway, but if you want a Cloud Breaker you can use the code TH-cam10 for 10% off at our website!

yessir! This was a look at how it plays out in "real world" conditions, especially given that we got to throw in headwind and tailwind
Nice video. I’d go with anything in the 167-169 range. ⛓️🥏⛓️🤙🏻
Got you down, good luck!
