- Are single hooks effective on trout lures? In todays video we find out, replacing the factory standard treble hooks with small single barbless hooks, you can see how I got on during a 2 hour lure session on the river fishing for trout!

I myself use solely single barbless hooks on crank baits.
Never failed me.
Even when I'm using treble hooks on other type lures, mainly big spoons, I will usually turn them into a double hook and de-barb them.

Class video Senan,thank you..lovely trout..i was on the lake today pike fishing and did well,they definitely in shallows now..loads of mayfly on the lake as well.

@@senanstanleyfishing thanks Senan,i have,got two today jerkbaiting and 2 trolling ..all in dromineer bay,two windy to go too far out but very happy with session..i was jerkbaiting one of mels handmade jerkbaits, a red and black colour, very effective..also found the fox replicant lure very good.
All of the bays will be great for the jerkbaiting from now on, soon as the weeds come up it will be even better 👌😎
That’s a pretty lure and some beautiful trout. They look quite similar to the “Brookies” we’ve got here in the states.

Great informative video Senan , I’ve tried the very same . I opted two crush barbs on all my trebles and it’s way better and easier on releasing. Singles work but not as good imo . Still fellas can make their own call . What jacket is that you’re wearing. My Simms G3 is finally wore out 😂atb Tony 🇮🇪

Great tips again, any chance you will gove BFS a crack on the stream? Osnyour casting accuracy as good asnwothnthe spinning gear?
Finding it so difficult to cast them small trout wobblers accurately with all the overhanging trees on bfs reel, but il get it done eventually 👌🤝

Get your hands on Strike Pro Dwarf Swing minnows, have tried them all and they are my go to for trout in west of Ireland

Great video as always thanks. Have you a preference for a particular type of single hook to swap in for the trebles? Some lures now come with both options but if you were buying a pack of singles to use on lures what type and sizes would you recommend?
Thank you. Gamakatsu do single inline hooks, I think size 8 and size 6 would do most of the smaller wobblers, BKK also have their own versions, similar quality. There’s actually a load of different brands, I have only used those two though, but I would definitely recommend buying a micro split ring pliers, them tiny split rings are impossible without them 😅👌

I've been using the Abu Solv hooks for sea trout and they come with a split ring attached (double split rings helps with sea trout including in line lures). sizes are too big though for the smaller brown trout lures so will check out the Gamakatsu. Agree on the split ring pliers being necessary kit!!

Hi, I use both fortis bays and wychwood, they are both good, I generally try to find ones that cover my whole eye, if the light gets in at all after a long days fishing it leads to headaches for me

I prefer removing the rear treble hook and leaving the front treble, putting a swivel where the tail hook was, for balance. I just missed too many strikes when I tried single hooks. Good sized fish usually hit the front of the lure anyway, so I'm not missing good fish having only the front treble.

Hi, I would recommend going for sinking wobblers, anything from 5-7cm will work for trout, even bigger 9-11cm twitch lures will work, Sakura phoxy minnows are great, salmo minnow, rapala xrap countdown, any of those kinda lures will catch. Keep on the move 👌
Have you ever been trout fishing in Longford or around the midlands? Or heard of any good spots to head to there? The fish must be gone on holiday this year or something haha can’t seem to get many bites apart from the odd perch and roach.
I’d be friendly with Brendan Sharkey he’s a guide up that direction, they can be hard to catch at the best of times man, wait for some heavy rain and the water levels will be up, the fish will feed more aggressively again 👌

i swopped all my lures last year for singles, even when you try to avoid it you end up maulin the mouths of the we browns and the singles help, its great bein able to just flick a single and thats them off, the only neg i can say is my own fault of not using a heavy enough gauge hook, id a 6lb whitetrout straightin my single last summer at the beach, but great video mate 👍

Just nice to show them in a video, any of the smaller lures on the river suit them single hooks, get less weeds and snag the rocks less. 👌 I wouldn’t use them on the lake though, we’ve a good number of ferox on derg, I wouldn’t fancy a single against a feroxs leathery mouth 😂👌
@@senanstanleyfishing have to agree mate its preserved my mepp collection since ive changed lol, big seatrout are the same mate mouths that tough a normal hook just scratches there skin and rubs off, need somethin a big meatier then for sure

It was just the standard one that came with the lure

Thank you! Ya it’s the best one I’ve used so far, it does keep me dry, but like all waterproofs, it’s only waterproof to a certain extent, if the rain is heavy enough and lasts long enough, it will always find a way through with Time 🙈☺️
Does Ireland require specific permits for river fishing?
Yes a lot of the rivers are club owned require permits, some are private, and some are day ticket

20 euro for 6 and a half months on that river - not bad,
If only they would invest the money back into the stretch a bit more, you’d wonder what they do with them memberships every year...the river should be full of 2-3lb fish, them signs with 4 fish bag limit and 10inch size need to all be removed! pollution pipes everywhere also. I never ever name the river on any of the videos, have to protect these places. 👌

Is it legal to use treble hooks in rivers and lakes?
Yes.
Fish never bite spinners for me they only bite worms with a float above any tips for spinners or any other ways to catch trout with out live bait
Worm fishing for trout is basically way too easy and it kills so many fish unnecessarily from deep hooking. Cast your lures upstream and keep moving 👍
Thanks for the tips the rivers I catch trout in streams are a lot smaller than those ones with small pooles In between the really shallow water are spinners the best or minnow shaped lures they are only 5 to 15 inches long like 1/3 of a pound

Couldn’t recommend naming rivers on social media lad, I never give locations. 👍 nothing personal, just is the wrong crowd see a location it can ruin an area.
That lure is far to big for water that low.
