Oooh! Did not expect to see one of my tattoos on here! It’s the Calvin and Hobbes one. The rough aging is partly my fault though. I never put on sunscreen and I love the sun. It’s also a tiny piece, about 6.5cm. So, friendly reminder, use sunscreen guys! 🖤

11:48 Pitakkm is a very well known Korean artist, and his work has only gotten better over time. He goes over all of the lighter parts of his tattoos first and let's that heal before doing the darker areas. Definitely an interesting technique that he started doing after the spirited away tattoo that's paid off!

Tattoo artist here; love these videos, they’re not only entertaining to watch but also a great learning experience! With most of the healed tattoos you can see that the pieces lacked contrast in colour / details and most importantly enough space between lines. The tattoos Korean artist Pitta does are a great example how to do small, detailed tattoos that heal well; contrasting colours next to each other, "empty spaces" next to more detailed ones and the artist simply understands what they’re doing perfectly. Love from Germany 💜

I loved Calvin and Hobbes back in the day (and still do, but I believe the cartoon ended quite a while ago). I used to have a Calvin and Hobbes tattoo as well. In fact, it was the first tattoo I ever got (about 30 years ago - yes, I'm OLD). Anyway, the artist really janked up Hobbes' (the cat) stomach - the curved line of his stomach had a hitch in it, part of the way through. Because of that and because I want to get a back piece (and this was on my shoulder blade), I had it lasered to make room for a future back piece. It's not 100% gone, but about 85% gone.

@@treacletattsit's actually very philosophical, and the strip has a unique place in Americana. The artist did not wish to develop merch, so people stole his work & did, and he wrapped up the series much earlier than expected, for artistic integrity. It would have been as popular as Peanuts/Snoopy or Garfield, but Bill cares more about his vision & a happy lifestyle than becoming a fabulously rich man. I have the collected works, you'd love it, it's appropriate for kids but written for adults. The strip deals with things like grief, but we also got the great snowman massacre and Bats: The Bug Scourge of the Skies! And spaceman spiff. But Calvin never peed on anything in the strip (lol Google "Ford vs Chevy USA rivalry pickup truck stickers")...

A big factor is pigment stability. Some carbon blacks and pigments are more easily broken down by your body. This doesn't include other factors like sun damage which also greatly affect the progression of how it ages. Over the years I've stopped using certain pigments because they were too easily broken down by the body, and certain blacks because they got too hazy on long-term healed pieces. Finding the perfect black, reds, oranges, and yellows for long-term stability have turned into quite the holy grail quest.

I also thought that those "patch" - like tattoos would not age well. They look super cool fresh, but enjoy it while it lasts people! But to be fair, that patch tattoo faded SO much, that I wouldn't be surprised if it got exposed to a lot of sun. I'm probably one of the older people that follow you (I'm 62 ) and I have a fair amount of tattoos. I didn't start dipping my toe into getting tattooed until I was 30 (still, a loooong time ago!). Anyway, my oldest tattoos I got lasered then covered, but I have some tattoos that look pretty darn good (faded, but still quite acceptable) at 15 + years old. All of my tattoos are big and bold in a neo-traditional style. I also am not a sun-worshipper and if I'm in the sun, I'm pretty good about putting sunscreen on my exposed tattoos. I think sun damage is probably the biggest factor in how a tattoo ages.

@@treacletatts It will be interesting to see some of the more modern style in 5-10 years. I have a micro-galaxy style that has some "stars" in it that I'm watching too - about 3 years in and it's holding up relatively well, but not quite as well as the bolder watercolour (with black outline) I have that has more space between the colours. In the corners, the colours have blended together and with the black outline to create a few muddy spots.

I’ve been binging your channel for the last few days. Your videos are really entertaining and interesting looks into a world I know very little about. My mother has had cosmetic tattoos/microblading done and got two colourful wrist tattoos as a 50th birthday present to herself, and has been really happy with the outcomes. I haven’t taken the plunge yet, as I don’t really know what I would want, and even if I did I tend to take a _long_ time thinking about this kind of thing before I get around to doing it. I always heard that tattoos fade. Even that tattoos stretch. Had no idea that tattoos actually blur and spread! Whenever I heard someone say "oh that tattoo won't hold up over time" I always thought that just mean that it would lighten, not that the lines themselves would lose definition and blur together. As someone planning to get tattoos soon these videos are SO helpful.

It was done by an apprentice who had only been working for a couple of months, and a few of the lines blew out and there's some scarring. It's still a nice tattoo honestly, but it's not what it was meant to be. Said apprentice did a lot more tattoos on me over the years, so my body has a timeline of how she's improved and grown into a really good tattoo artist!

The one around the 10:00 minute mark, some of the reason the moon might not be as reddish anymore is that may have been a bit of irritation in the initial photo. My fresh photo of my one tattoo the sunflower and cheeks of a doll look red but healed it’s yellow and the cheeks are just a grey wash as intended. The colours have held incredibly well though and it’s about 8 years old (I’m very on my sunscreen😆). My friend has one by the same artist, probably at most a year older, and they told me they haven’t been as good about the sunscreen and it’s still held the colours really well too, they also have yellow in it. A good artist definitely goes a long way towards the longevity of the tattoo along with proper care.
I also think the bug was a cicada!

The colour is pale but still visible. The black line work though is almost invisible as a drop shadow. Add the lightest shades being super light now (but can still see them). My biggest tattoo was done in 2018 is a watercolor tattoo it's like a black splatter of ink that there's a crescent moon in yellow - orange - red colors and in the center of the crescent moon in the splatters of black ink there's a black cat kinda hidden in it, and we still see it 🥰the eyes and the whiskers are not as readable obviously but I love it so much still 💕 And for my first one I don't have a freshly done photo in my phone anymore 😅I had my first one when I was around 22 so it was 2015. 8 years with my first watercolor tattoo and it had aged not so badly but it did lost all it's saturation. It was done by an apprentice, she wag quite good for an apprentice but she's way better now obviously. I had have my second tattoo done by her few years later around 2017 and this one healed so much better, the colors are more saturated, the line were better etc. I only have 4 tattoo so far haha but yeah still love them even if my first one looks meh today.

That patchwork tattoo is of the Minnesota State Fair mascot, Fairchild the Gopher, and I just never considered someone would get a tattoo of that lmao, I kind of dig it tho. I bet when it was fresh and not so rough looking that anyone who saw it at the fair complimented it lol.

I think my first tattoo just turned 12 years old and it looks almost new. It's a traditional piece though, so that's to be expected. The yellow faded a little but is still clearly yellow, the only other thing is lots of white dots in it that I think came from having my legs waxed, but you have to go pretty close to see them. Still love it, still love getting very colourful tattoos!
Put on sunscreen guys, your skin and tattoos will thank you!

I'm sure a few people before me have brought up sunscreen, but hydration too! I'm usually chronically dehydrated but have been better about it over the past few weeks, and I had someone ask if my tattoos were touched up recently. Take care of your body folks, it keeps you pretty 😆

So I have my ear tattooed. I message my artist after the first time I washed my hair because the parts around the outside of the ear faded in that first wash, and quite dramatically. The parts on the flat of my ear have healed really well so far, it’s 2 and 1/2 months old x

Calvin and Hobbes is a a funny and adorable comic it’s about Calvin the boy and Hobbes is actually his stuffed animal tiger but in the comic he is presented as if he’s sentient and he’s more sarcastic and reasonable like an adult and Calvin can be a menace if he wants to
I loved reading it as a kid, there’s one where the parents are on a walk in winter and they say “you can always tell when you get to our house” because the snowmen were normal up until their yard where Calvin built a 2 headed mutant of a snowman

One of my oldest healed tattoos is a skeleton key with a green ribbon, still love it though the green is a more yellow green tattoo. Though I have some ish feelings about the tattoo because I wanted it down my spine but I was younger and told they couldn't do that with a ribbon (which I compeltely disagree with) so it's across my back. It wouldn't be difficult to get that touched up. That's about 15 years old. Another one is lettering that the ink has definitely spread. I do have a tattoo thats more of watercolor esque tattoo that had good outlines thats 5 years old where the color is really faded, but the outlines are still there. It's a decently large piece so I'd be up to getting that one touched up with more vibrant colors.
I do have a behind the ear tattoo that's smaller, not fine line, about an inch or so in length though. It's a little simple line mouse that has faded and spread a bit.
I guess needing touch ups will make up for when I don't have space for brand new tattoos 😂

I think a big issue with a lot of color having faded is the fact that the client doesn't wear sunscreen when out in the sun.

I have a question, do newer tattoos hold better? I'm wondering how advancements in tattoo technique and tattoo technology have influenced things? Like would a modern day American Traditional last better than one that was done in the 60s?

Still haven't decided if I should go in for within one year-touch up that my artist offers because it looks fine to me and I think it's healed quite well but who knows... definitely need to send her some healed pictures though

you can really tell from aging photos who takes care of their skin and who doesn't. my artist has sleeves from the 90s and the black is still black and the color is still bright. his top tip? take care of your skin! stay out of the sun, wear SPF, and body butter is your best friend. and a good exfoliation every now and then is good to remove that top layer of skin that makes tattoos look less bright. only exfoliate healed tattoos though. but yeah take care of your skin and your tattoos will thank you.

I really think you need to make a distinction between lines that have naturally blurred with aging and blow outs. Calvin and Hobbs tattoo and the script tattoo were blow outs. Blow outs don’t have to be deep and blue. These lines are so thick because there was too much ink packed in one place so when it settles it spreads and this is absolutely not because of aging it because he application. Those tattoos probably looked like that a month after they were done.
