Just to set things straight before we begin, this video was shot on April 5th of this year, and I think the logical question would bee why is it being posted 7 months after it was shot. Now, the answer to that question would have be that swarm season came on like a storm, and I posted video after video on all the swarms I was catching. By the way, and Rooster if you are reading this, it was more than 50 of them for me....not counting the ones in our own yards. OK, now that the mystery has been solved, I can move on to the topic of this video, saving bees in a tree.
I'm not going to mince words here, this was a very sad removal. The tree was felled the prior day, and the entire hive was exposed to the elements for over 12 hours during which time the temperatures dipped into the lower thirties for several hours. Not only had the hive lost thousands of bees when the tree initially hit the ground, but the cold took care of all the brood in the comb. By the time I got there, the bees had abandoned the comb and were clustering in the trunk of the fallen tree.
Still, as I am always hopeful, I started gathering bees and put them in a box that had old brood comb in it, searching for the queen against all odds. I probably got 5,000 bees to get into the box, but there was no sign of the queen. However, I did find a viable queen cell on the comb I had removed, and I placed it on one of the frames of comb I had brought in hopes the queen inside would emerge and bring this hive back.
The following day, I transferred 3 frames of bees and two more frames with comb on it into a 5 frame nuc, and I waited to see if the queen would emerge. After 2 weeks, the queen never emerged, and the bees were beginning to dwindle in number. It was at this point I combined the bees with a healthy hive in the yard. Needless to say, I was disappointed, but at least I gave it my best shot.
But on a brighter note, the out take on this video was shot in June, after we had processed and bottled our honey, and I wanted to credit the wonderful ladies who helped in that process. There is no way I could do all the work that is necessary for our honey operation by myself, and I rely heavily on the help of wonderful people like this continually. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

Like you said, this was heartbreaking. A healthy strong hive like that, lost because of circumstances out of their control. I'm thankful that there's someone like you, who will go out and take a chance on bees who need your help. Our world is better for it.

I hope the girls made it one of my hives was an RV rescue they moved the RV causing the hive to collapse. Unfortunately most of the bees parished but I managed to save the brood and a few bees. Now they are one of the strongest colonies I have.
These bees never recovered, and I wound up merging them with another hive in the bee yard. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

My name is with 3 of the major tree cutting companies in our area. They will and do call me whenever they are cutting a tree that has bees in it to save them. The company was unaware of the presence of the bees in this tree and that's why I had not been notified before it was cut. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Good Friday morning compassionate sir. It almost broke my heart to hear this. Its better to leave them alone in the wild I think. But when you have a situation such as this, you have to do what you have to do. Just hopefully all will be well once they are secure. Bless you Mr. Ed for helping the world.

the problem now with varroa mites is, wild colonies will die without help. varroa came from asia, with our shipping trade with china. apis millifera, (our honey bees), are almost defenseless against mites, and now hive beetles. they can stand off wax moths, but varroa mites bring diseases, that also affect them heavily. so man brought them here from europe, and now has brought something horrible to them as well. I keep my bees with oxcylic acid, which is a natural chemical, or organic chemical, and is 70 times as toxic to the mites as the bees.
I enjoy seeing the "inner workings" of honey production!!! And it is a special treat to have a little something extra after the end of the bee wrangling!!! Thanks for another great video!!! 🐝💙🐝

That's one sad story. Once bees have abandoned the comb, chances of the colony making it are next to none. I would probably have newspaper merged them with a healthy hive right away. They say you win some, you lose some, but that doesn't make losing feel any less bad. You gave them the best chance you could, that's what counts! Thanks for another sad but great video!
I pretty much knew it was over for them when I saw they had abandoned the comb, but when they clustered the queen cell, it gave me hope. Had I merged them sooner , it would have really helped the hive they joined, but that hive is still very active today. God's peace brother.

@Jeff Horchoff It was a small colony without brood, with at best one queen that had to hatch, mate, and start laying, just after winter. The numbers would have dwindled at first anyway, and checking for new brood would have further stressed an already struggling hive. I'd have done the same thing. I never merge bees from a colony I don't know the health status of.
I'm not a fan of merging bee either, you never know if they have a virus, but I felt it was a safe bet seeing the size of the hive when it was in the tree. God's peace brother.

@Jeff Horchoff When after a month you saw no abnormal patterns of demise, I'd say it was safe enough to merge them. Especially if, like you said, the fallen hive looked healthy. What a shame though. I saw at least two huge combs full of brood.
Kudos for also showing the sad stories. It's the sour that makes us really appreciate the sweet.

Thank you for loving the bees. I hardly ever see a honey bee, wasp or hornet or bumble bee. North Central Indiana. I have many water sources, flowers + flowering bushes, do not use sprays or chems, only herbal or spice weed killers, have frogs + toads + birds of all kinds, chem trails have damaged trees + just now seeing grasshoppers, praying mantis again. It's sad these bees wouldn't make it on their own. They never stood a chance without some help. Now I hope the next cutout is more successful that they can make it. I would like to see a December beehive removal if you can after October and November hive or swarm removals. Peace!
Despite my intervention, I was to late and the hive never made it. I ended up merging the bees with another colony, and that one is thriving. I have several cutouts in the next few weeks and will continue doing them through January. They have all had a tremendous survival record. Till then, God's peace.

I shot this video in early April, and it was abnormally chilly for us at the time. Most of the videos I will be posting in the next few months, I post a new video each Friday, are all back dated as I was posting all my swarm catches and it took 2 months to do that. It's not quite that cold here in Gulf-Coast Texas. I've got a fallen rotten tree that has had bees in it for a couple years. It continues to rot and I'm afraid the hive limb will fall apart soon. I'd like to capture and rehouse them. I'm not a bee keeper but these types of videos inspire me. But I don't want to do it wrong and wreck it for them.
Removing bee from trees is not an easy job, unless you can open the trunk up. Over the next few weeks I will be showing videos of tree removals, and it may give you the confidence to try it yourself. Keep me posted, and thanks for watching. God's peace.

I'm curious about that too. I know of its existence, but nothing like it is sold here in northern Europe. If it's not banned, maybe we should think about starting to import it. I've had several situations where it definitely would have come in handy.
Honey Robber is the liquid used to run bees off their honey supers in a bee box. I use it as well to run bees out of inaccessible spaces, they can't stand the way it smells. Unfortunately, the cold killed the queen cell as well as all the brood. The remaining bees were merged with another hive which still is thriving today. @@JeffHorchoff I am glad that you were able to give those girls a new home with other bees. I do not know much about bees and their habits of living with other bees but I do know that they all work for one purpose, to breed and survive. I watched a video of a guy here in Southern Arizona who gets rid of "Killer Bees" we have a lot of Africanized bees here and although their venom is the same as regular honey bees They are 20 times more aggressive than those sweet honey bees in LA. Here the man does not use poison, Praise God, but uses soap water to kill them. Believe me not only do they produce much more honey and much more aggressive, but they also have stronger queens which produce more bees. Our swarms here are normally 40 to 60K bees. It would take only one to kill me as I am very allergic to bee venom. They have killed many people across South, Central and now North America. The man who gets rid of the bees tries to get their honey which he has turned into a lucrative business.
I thought of the bees in your area being so calm even when they swarm and are angry, hundreds do not go after someone who disturbs their nests for a quarter mile with one intention to kill the disturbance. I am so thankful that your bees are not THESE bees. Smoking them seems to just make them more aggressive. But this Honey Robber is something they could use here to gather the fruits of these bees. Even with the destruction of hundreds of thousands of A bees here they are spreading. They seem to be adapting to cooler temps up north even as far as Wisconsin. Of course with harsh winters many of them die. I was hoping to put this guy into getting the Honey Robber stuff so that he could get their comb without so much destruction. I hope and pray you never have to face the full onslaught of a killer bee attack. It is a terrible thing to see. I love my honey from you and am willing to donate to the Abbey every year for another pound of it. Being it is pure and not mostly corn syrup I do not have to use so much. It helps me fight off colds and cold sores. It is in my tea, my oatmeal and in my yogurt. You are so dear to me as a friend (albeit on the net) but also as a brother in Christ. Keep doing what you do and know you are prayed for with every capture. God be with you. JJ
@Mr. Ed, I tried that, but Mann Lake can't ship it to the EU. The active ingredient, N-Butyric Anhydride, is sold as a chemical here locally, but about 5x more expensive than Mann Lake's prices.

Shame here, it’s sad there what I see is these bees have the best chance of survival because your there. No sadness I rejoice that those bees live close enough to you for you to swoop in and give them the best chance as possible to recover and thrive. What would be sad is if this hive was out of your reach. Because of you that hive will probably be productive and producing so much by next fall your will be able to harvest honey from them. It is you and other professionals like you that I have hope that bees will still be alive and well in the future in North America. I enjoy your videos and I know just how important your work is for the bees and humans.

Just curious and I wasn't able to find the answer in the comments. Why was the queen cell savable but the rest of the brood was a lost cause? did they instinctively protect that cell at the cost of the others? thanks for all the great videos!
Very often the queen cells offer more insulation to protect the larva, but even that was not enough for this queen, she never emerged, and the bees eventually were merged with another colony. If the rest of the capped brood and larvae were chilled and dead, how would the Queen cell be viable? Is the queen cell walls thicker and more protected?
The queen cell had perished as well, I was just holding out hope since the bees clustered on her when I placed her in the box. To my knowledge, a queen cell is no more protected than a workers cell. Thanks for watching. God's peace Mary.

Unfortunately, there will be no follow up, the bees were merged with another colony as they were failing due to the fact their queen never emerged. That's the agony of bee keeping for you. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Question on putting the hive in a nuc, could you just leave them in the 10 -frame box, but take out 5 frames? Or, put in empty undrawn frames? As long as the entrance was small they could control the space they have. I’ve observed and surmise that bees can control large empty spaces just fine. I.e., have three small combs in a log that is 20 gallons large. I’ve been watching some German and Brit videos, where they don’t use many nuc songs, but put splits into 10 or 8 frames. I could use a Devi’s Simon board too? The top bar hives often have have a lot of open space too.

I'm always worried about giving the bees to much space on cut outs. The bees are very stressed to begin with and I believe that stress releases pheromones that hive beetles detect. If there are not enough bees to patrol the area, this becomes an easy target for the beetle. I just play it safe that's all. I'm curious about something. If I'm correct, in the New England states it is illegal to disturb, alter, destroy, move another fisherman's lobster traps. What laws are there to protect a hive in this manner? By placing your box there do/have you staked a claim on those bees?
Pat Bubba I’d think the law wouldn’t apply as the bees originally were not in a hive, but in a natural space, i.e., feral. If the bees were previously in someone else’s hive and Mr. Ed came in and took the bees from one hive to put them into his hive, that probably would be theft.

He's wrangling feral bees into his box. If they adopt Mr. Ed's box, or he catches them, does his work in this situation equate somewhat a similar protection afforded to Maine lobstermen and their lobster traps?
There is no protection of the claim other than what God provides. It's always a risk to leave something unattended even if there are laws to prevent obstruction or theft. Often, I rely on the remoteness of the location to prevent theft or disturbance as was the case here. Very good question Pat. God's peace brother.

That early in the year bees are pretty comb-ridden. Most likely the lumberjacks didn't even know the hive was there when they axed the tree.
Mmm, makes sense. Given they called you as soon as they realized it, they surely would've called you before if they'd known. It was just sad to hear you saying how strong and healthy the hive had been before the tree went down and then spend that cold night out without the protection of the tree around them to hold in their heat. Hope they make it after all.
The company never knew the bees were in the tree until it hit the ground. I guess it was so chilly they weren't flying so they weren't noticed. Generally, the tree companies will call me before they cut the trees so I can be present when it is felled, this one got past them. The queen never emerged, and the bees were merged with another colony a few weeks later. God's peace Carole.

hey i have a question, i was just outside throwing a ball for my dog, and out of nowhere a massive swarm of bees flew by and it lasted about 10 secs, i wasnt able to record it though, so i was wondering if u knew what just happened

How do you know that the brood is dead? Just by the temperature of the prior evening, or something else?

Honey Robber is a liquid that stinks to high heavens. It is used to drive bees from honey supers so they are not on them when you collect your rent. You can but it from any bee equipment supplier, I buy mine from Mann Lake Bee Supplies. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
