The bees had had a nice safe defendable nook and then in minutes were opened up to all manner of hazard and left impossibly to fend for themselves. The previous bee men need greater experience and more competent follow through - even given an emergency where they couldn't continue their work they could have trim stapled a piece of sturdy tarping to secure the incomplete job for their successors or their own return with better help.
God woke up one morning and as he was yawning and rubbing his eyes, he heard a buzzing in his ear. He thought "I know I know, todays the day we get Mr. Ed over there and finish up what someone else started". Knowing the job will be completed in a timely manner and stately fashion, and it was. A removal is very stressful for bees. By giving the bees their own comb, it greatly reduces the stress level, and helps accelerate the recovery process. Yes, in my opinion, it is very important to give the bees as much of their dry comb as possible, and this is why I take great care in framing up the comb. To see it all piled up IS very sad. Putting on that "Life Alert" is like wearing a life jacket when you are on a boat. I was very happy how this whole removal ended up also. Not only that, I split the hive a few weeks later, and I pulled over 4 gallons of honey from the split 3 weeks ago. These are some great bees. Thanks for watching. God's peace Marty. Mr. Ed
No dumb question, there are a few easy ways of spotting her if you know what to look for. 1. Her abdomen is about 1/2 and inch longer than other bees, consequently making her larger. 2. Her wings do not cover her abdomen but reach only about 1/ 2 the length of her body. Other bees, the wings cover their bodies. 3. There is a big black dot on the back of her head, and finally, 4. She's the one wearing the crown, but you have to look really hard because it's very small.
@@rosamariamendoza1466 Since no one else has answered your question.. a Life Alert is an emergency call device, in case someone has a medical emergency and needs competent help. Jeff didn't say, but in his case, I think it's meant to signal he's been hurt, so someone can call 911, though some similar devices are monitored and when a distress call goes out, local emergency services are dispatched. Some but not all models have voice communication as well.
I have to admit, my first removal was not good. But I learned a lot, and never made those mistakes again. Fortunately there are many great keepers on TH-cam, and they share knowledge. Thanks Mr. Ed.

You know, there is something so satisfying about watching a man who loves his work. I don't really enjoy my job, so watching this guy almost squeal in excitement, while earning his paycheck, just makes me happy.

There is NO WAY the first people were beekeepers. They might have some hives....but they OBVIOUSLY don't care about keeping bees healthy....A Beekeeper diligently work to keep their bees healthy.......piling comb into a box shows that there was absolutely no consideration for the health of the hive. I am so glad you were willing to come in and clean up that mess and help the hive to thrive.
I can remember the first cut out I did, it was not pretty, and the bees absconded. There is always a learning curve when we venture into new areas, and it is with great hope that we learn from our mistakes and not repeat them. The real tragedy in the learning curve is that the bees are the ones who suffer most for our ignorance. I've seen a few instances where people have gone out, caught the queen, took a bit of comb, and packed it in. I get the impression that sometimes people figure just because they are beekeepers that they're also cut-out and removal specialists. But good on you for getting a nice colony!

Boy, there is a huge difference between people who know what they're doing and people who don't. We had bees in the common walls of our complex and the first guys knocked two big jagged holes in my wall and then shrugged and called it a "nightmare scenario" and had no suggestions other than "big deal, maybe you should leave 'em be." I insisted on getting some good people and they came out. Took a long time to figure out where they were, but they were behind my neighbor's closet! Now the bees are living in a community garden, and the homeowner's association is probably mad about how much it cost, but I personally paid for half. I am for saving bees and taking care of them. Thanks for caring about them so much!

@@JeffHorchoff Would love to keep bees but am seriously allergic to insect stings and bites. I do what I can; over the last couple of years have been planting St Johns Wort which all different kinds of bees go crazy on collecting pollen. Looked more like vandalism then an attempted removal. Even as new as I am to beekeeping I could have told them they was doing it wrong. No way the bees could fix that. Thank god for you sir.

You make removals look so easy and clean. When I first started I had honey everywhere. It take practice on keeping the mess down. Very sad to see people throw out all that perfect comb. I try to make 2 brood boxes if possible. That one looked like a monster hive for sure.
Keeping the removal site as honey free as possible is always a priority for me. The less honey spills, the less likelihood of starting a robbing frenzy. Still, it is almost inevitable there will be honey spilled, but to minimize it is my goal. This was a large removal, but I have done a few much bigger. At least these girls were removed at the right time of the year, and they have done exceptionally well. Not only did I split them early on, but I harvested over 4 gallons of honey from them as well. I am always amazed at how and where bees build their hives. When I look upon the beauty of a hive with all it's intricacies, I lose myself in the wonder of it, and see the hand of God. I done my first cut out this year! I made my own bee vac got the bees caught the queen got 100% of the cone and replaced all soffit back. Of corse iam a self-employed carpenter for 26 years and a 3rd generation bee keeper. It helped knowing wood ,bees , and how to work professionally for a client

Hi, some of us are getting into bees. We are good people and sometimes get in over our head. It takes experience to do what you do. We love to learn and learn by trying, but it takes experience and that comes by trying and sometimes failing. I hope the first guy talked to the customer with the truth. Sometimes it is hard to admit we are in over our heads. We move on and try another removal. Thanks for the encouragement.
I am all in favor of folks who have never removed bees to dive on in, that's exactly what I did. I made lots of mistakes initially, and I'm still learning even after doing more than 100 of them. Mr. Ed. I enjoy your videos and enthusiasm. A suggestion, if I may. If possible when making a still shot from your video, finding a sharp image of the queen and not one that contains fuzzy, digital artifacts or graininessthat would distort your queen "money shots". Then, move that money shot to a just off of center in the screen with perhaps an enlargement of double the original size. If you don't want to worry about losing the original video for this, cutting down to the specific money shot for a short clip then adding it as a new track over the original video. Them you could zoom in and crop the new clip to show off the queen for a few seconds and then cut back to the original video.
Wow, if only I could do what you suggest, it really is a great idea, and I love it. My problem, I'm old and inept when it comes to fancy editing. I'm sure if I had some special tutoring, about 3 days worth, I could make an attempt at your suggestion. I will say in my defense, I did a VERY modified version of your suggestion in the video I edited Sunday. I took the frame, a queen being released on a frame, froze it, chopped it, enlarged it, and then reinserted it on the timeline. I'm afraid I was at my technical limit of creativity. Working up high is not my idea of fun, but sometimes it is necessary. At least I was working off of some really nice scaffolding. The joists were 2x12's so the comb was extra tall. This was a very large hive, and in a sense, the fella that attempted it first, made my job a bit easier. Sometimes in the field repairs are required, and duct tape is usually the means by which the repairs are done. It may not fix it permanently, but it can finish up the job. God's peace David. Mr. Ed

This was a large removal, and the comb was built between 2x12's so it was extra deep. In a way, the fellas before me saved me a bit of work. That's really sad they just threw all that comb in the box. What did they think the bees would do carry the comb out of the box?!! It's just really sad. If they knew they couldn't do it they should have just stopped instead of tearing it up and leaving all those dead bees on the ground. But I'm so happy you're getting them and giving the a wonderful home at the Abby, they'll be so happy there.

I wanted to suggest to you to find a bee club in your area and join it now. You do not need to have bees to belong to a club, just a love for them. You will meet some really great folks who can give you valuable information on keeping bee in the area you live and that is very important. I'm planning on going to a club meeting this coming Tuesday. I live about an hour north of Austin, TX, so pretty mild winters compared to what they go through up north. Mr. Ed, starting at 10:25 you start throwing the shook frames from the bee vac - I presume from that that in your youth (but a short time ago - for sure) you and a dog were a pretty competent frisbee jump/fetch team.

1. That is very kind of you to say, thank you! 2. The bee vac is specially designed NOT to harm bees. It allows me to remove the bees from the comb, unharmed, so that I can remove the comb and place it in frames. Later, the bees are released from the bee vac and rejoined with their queen and comb. 3.The abbey is called St. Joseph Abbey and Seminary College. It is located in St. Benedict, Louisiana, about 50 miles north of New Orleans. It is home to 34 monks who's life purpose is to serve God and all His creation. It was sad to see that the first person just put the combs willy-nilly into a box. He should learn more about bee wrangling before going after a hive...it’s vitally important to my way of thinking for a person to know how to do their job properly, for their own safety, and the safety of the bees... I’ve seen how you put the comb you cut away by rubber banding them into a frame, and then putting the frame into the box...didn’t this joker even watch a few TH-cam videos before making a mess and botching the job? Poor bee! I pray that the first guy studies up on bees before ever attempting to remove another hive! You are awesome, Mr. Ed! As I look back on the many mistakes I have made over my years of wrangling, it is easy for me to understand how something like this happened. I do not feel it is my place to pass judgement on someone else's work, but rather I should judge the work that I do. That I have control over and can do something about it. You are right in that God makes all situations work together for our ultimate good. One of my favorites is Genesis chapter 50, where Joseph forgives his brothers for selling him into slavery, and tells them that God turned their evil plans and actions into blessings for all-the Bible says it better than I ever could! Bees are very much effected by events such as a removal, and believe it or not, it causes them a lot of stress. That stress can lead to the demise of the colony, but fortunately these bees were able to bounce back. In general, the hives with a lot of bees tend to recover when disaster strikes. These girls did so well, I harvested over 4 gallons of honey from them just a few weeks ago. Talk about tough bees. Thank you for the videos. I tried beekeeping for a few years here in Arizona, but now 100% of our feral hives are Africanized. Some local beeks work with them, but I can't recommend it in an urban setting like mine. So... I'll just get my fix watching you work with your girls!

Great video Mr Ed, but July in Louisianan and it's only 60F? We have had a really hot summer so far in the UK, by our standards anyway, even up here in Scotland it's been in the high 80's which is hot hot hot for us.

Is there something that you do to ensure that the area you cleared in the ceiling does not attract other bees? In years gone by I regularly had to have bee colonies removed from the same place even though the only thing left each time was a bit of wax where the combs had been attached
It is a very difficult task to prevent bees from reinfesting an area they have previously been. The best defense is making sure there are no entry ways for bees to find. Fortunately for this location, that job is not to difficult to achieve. im so angry with who ever was there before you, and just destroyed most of the bees and most of there hive, useless clueless people that should not be doing that job, they couldnt even handle it and left it half way through, thank god for people like you, your amazing everything you do for those little ones to move there little home somewhere else for them, not just come along and destroy them, god put people like you on this earth for a reason, if i were you, i would be really really proud of yourself, from an animal fanatic... Our first removal we told the guy it was outside our skills. He said "I'll do whatever it takes" and starts tearing up the wall. Then after a couple of hours he lost his nerve and said to stop. Needless to say it was an absolute failure. Now he has a torn up wall AND bees. And now we lost a day working in 95º weather and didn't accomplish anything.
I have one or two unfortunate bee removals in my history as well, but if we can learn from them, hopefully the event will not bee repeated. It's just unfortunate the poor bees suffer for our ignorance or pride. Thanks for sharing your story and for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

The bees had had a nice safe defendable nook and then in minutes were opened up to all manner of hazard and left impossibly to fend for themselves. The previous bee men need greater experience and more competent follow through - even given an emergency where they couldn't continue their work they could have trim stapled a piece of sturdy tarping to secure the incomplete job for their successors or their own return with better help.

A removal is very stressful for bees. By giving the bees their own comb, it greatly reduces the stress level, and helps accelerate the recovery process. Yes, in my opinion, it is very important to give the bees as much of their dry comb as possible, and this is why I take great care in framing up the comb. To see it all piled up IS very sad. I have a dumb question. How can you tell the difference between a queen bee and the other bees.?
Putting on that "Life Alert" is like wearing a life jacket when you are on a boat. I was very happy how this whole removal ended up also. No dumb question, there are a few easy ways of spotting her if you know what to look for.
1. Her abdomen is about 1/2 and inch longer than other bees, consequently making her larger.
2. Her wings do not cover her abdomen but reach only about 1/ 2 the length of her body. Other bees, the wings cover their bodies.
3. There is a big black dot on the back of her head, and finally,
4. She's the one wearing the crown, but you have to look really hard because it's very small.
I'm sorry, but what is a Life Alert?
@@rosamariamendoza1466 Since no one else has answered your question.. a Life Alert is an emergency call device, in case someone has a medical emergency and needs competent help. Jeff didn't say, but in his case, I think it's meant to signal he's been hurt, so someone can call 911, though some similar devices are monitored and when a distress call goes out, local emergency services are dispatched. Some but not all models have voice communication as well.
I have to admit, my first removal was not good. But I learned a lot, and never made those mistakes again. Fortunately there are many great keepers on TH-cam, and they share knowledge.

You know, there is something so satisfying about watching a man who loves his work. I don't really enjoy my job, so watching this guy almost squeal in excitement, while earning his paycheck, just makes me happy.

There is NO WAY the first people were beekeepers. They might have some hives....but they OBVIOUSLY don't care about keeping bees healthy....A Beekeeper diligently work to keep their bees healthy.......piling comb into a box shows that there was absolutely no consideration for the health of the hive.
I am so glad you were willing to come in and clean up that mess and help the hive to thrive.
I can remember the first cut out I did, it was not pretty, and the bees absconded. There is always a learning curve when we venture into new areas, and it is with great hope that we learn from our mistakes and not repeat them. The real tragedy in the learning curve is that the bees are the ones who suffer most for our ignorance. I must have binge watched ten of your bee videos last night, being in a city I have to live vicariously when it comes to bee keeping unless we ever find a breed that eats cars, I think they are amazing creatures.
I've seen a few instances where people have gone out, caught the queen, took a bit of comb, and packed it in.
I get the impression that sometimes people figure just because they are beekeepers that they're also cut-out and removal specialists.
But good on you for getting a nice colony!

Boy, there is a huge difference between people who know what they're doing and people who don't. We had bees in the common walls of our complex and the first guys knocked two big jagged holes in my wall and then shrugged and called it a "nightmare scenario" and had no suggestions other than "big deal, maybe you should leave 'em be." I insisted on getting some good people and they came out. Took a long time to figure out where they were, but they were behind my neighbor's closet! Now the bees are living in a community garden, and the homeowner's association is probably mad about how much it cost, but I personally paid for half. I am for saving bees and taking care of them. Thanks for caring about them so much!
At least the bees in your story and the bees in this video had a happy ending to their removal, many hives are not that fortunate. @@JeffHorchoff Would love to keep bees but am seriously allergic to insect stings and bites. I do what I can; over the last couple of years have been planting St Johns Wort which all different kinds of bees go crazy on collecting pollen. Looked more like vandalism then an attempted removal. Even as new as I am to beekeeping I could have told them they was doing it wrong. No way the bees could fix that. Thank god for you sir.

You make removals look so easy and clean. When I first started I had honey everywhere. It take practice on keeping the mess down. Very sad to see people throw out all that perfect comb. I try to make 2 brood boxes if possible. That one looked like a monster hive for sure.
Keeping the removal site as honey free as possible is always a priority for me. The less honey spills, the less likelihood of starting a robbing frenzy. Still, it is almost inevitable there will be honey spilled, but to minimize it is my goal. This was a large removal, but I have done a few much bigger. At least these girls were removed at the right time of the year, and they have done exceptionally well. Not only did I split them early on, but I harvested over 4 gallons of honey from them as well. I was wondering wondering whether the other beekeepers went there just for the queen then left. Strange they got that far then quit. Nice video from a U.K fan. I'm sure they wanted the entire hive, but they bit off more than they could chew, and flew the coupe when they realized that fact. I am always amazed at how and where bees build their hives. When I look upon the beauty of a hive with all it's intricacies, I lose myself in the wonder of it, and see the hand of God. I done my first cut out this year! I made my own bee vac got the bees caught the queen got 100% of the cone and replaced all soffit back.
Of corse iam a self-employed carpenter for 26 years and a 3rd generation bee keeper. It helped knowing wood ,bees , and how to work professionally for a client

Hi, some of us are getting into bees. We are good people and sometimes get in over our head. It takes experience to do what you do. We love to learn and learn by trying, but it takes experience and that comes by trying and sometimes failing. I hope the first guy talked to the customer with the truth. Sometimes it is hard to admit we are in over our heads. We move on and try another removal. Thanks for the encouragement.
I am all in favor of folks who have never removed bees to dive on in, that's exactly what I did. I made lots of mistakes initially, and I'm still learning even after doing more than 100 of them. There's always a learning curve in trying something new, as long as we remain open to learning, things will eventually level off and begin to work. I wish you well in your bee rescue endeavors. Mr. Ed. I enjoy your videos and enthusiasm. A suggestion, if I may. If possible when making a still shot from your video, finding a sharp image of the queen and not one that contains fuzzy, digital artifacts or graininessthat would distort your queen "money shots". Then, move that money shot to a just off of center in the screen with perhaps an enlargement of double the original size. If you don't want to worry about losing the original video for this, cutting down to the specific money shot for a short clip then adding it as a new track over the original video. Them you could zoom in and crop the new clip to show off the queen for a few seconds and then cut back to the original video.
Wow, if only I could do what you suggest, it really is a great idea, and I love it. My problem, I'm old and inept when it comes to fancy editing. I'm sure if I had some special tutoring, about 3 days worth, I could make an attempt at your suggestion. I will say in my defense, I did a VERY modified version of your suggestion in the video I edited Sunday. I took the frame, a queen being released on a frame, froze it, chopped it, enlarged it, and then reinserted it on the timeline. I'm afraid I was at my technical limit of creativity. Glad you had your life alert on, looks like it was a tuff one. Good job on the removal.
Working up high is not my idea of fun, but sometimes it is necessary. At least I was working off of some really nice scaffolding. The joists were 2x12's so the comb was extra tall. This was a very large hive, and in a sense, the fella that attempted it first, made my job a bit easier. By the way, I harvested over 4 gallons of honey from these girls as well as making a split from them to boot. Great bees. God's peace brother.

This was a large removal, and the comb was built between 2x12's so it was extra deep. In a way, the fellas before me saved me a bit of work. That's really sad they just threw all that comb in the box. What did they think the bees would do carry the comb out of the box?!! It's just really sad. If they knew they couldn't do it they should have just stopped instead of tearing it up and leaving all those dead bees on the ground. I wanted to suggest to you to find a bee club in your area and join it now. You do not need to have bees to belong to a club, just a love for them. You will meet some really great folks who can give you valuable information on keeping bee in the area you live and that is very important. Folks up north keep bees different from folks down south, food and climate have everything to do with it. Let me know how you progress goes. God's peace brother.

I'm planning on going to a club meeting this coming Tuesday. I live about an hour north of Austin, TX, so pretty mild winters compared to what they go through up north. Mr. Ed, starting at 10:25 you start throwing the shook frames from the bee vac - I presume from that that in your youth (but a short time ago - for sure) you and a dog were a pretty competent frisbee jump/fetch team.

1. That is very kind of you to say, thank you!
2. The bee vac is specially designed NOT to harm bees. It allows me to remove the bees from the comb, unharmed, so that I can remove the comb and place it in frames. Later, the bees are released from the bee vac and rejoined with their queen and comb.
3.The abbey is called St. Joseph Abbey and Seminary College. It is located in St. Benedict, Louisiana, about 50 miles north of New Orleans. It is home to 34 monks who's life purpose is to serve God and all His creation. By the way, it is my intend to become a monk here as well, and I plan on being their bee keeper just like I'm doing presently.

It was sad to see that the first person just put the combs willy-nilly into a box. He should learn more about bee wrangling before going after a hive...it’s vitally important to my way of thinking for a person to know how to do their job properly, for their own safety, and the safety of the bees...
I’ve seen how you put the comb you cut away by rubber banding them into a frame, and then putting the frame into the box...didn’t this joker even watch a few TH-cam videos before making a mess and botching the job? Poor bee!
I pray that the first guy studies up on bees before ever attempting to remove another hive!

As I look back on the many mistakes I have made over my years of wrangling, it is easy for me to understand how something like this happened. I do not feel it is my place to pass judgement on someone else's work, but rather I should judge the work that I do. That I have control over and can do something about it. Still, it is very sad to see that the lowly bee is the one who carries the weight of our mistakes, but even this, God will bring good from. It's great to hear from you Carolyn. God's peace always.

Jeff Horchoff I am of a contrite heart, Mr. Ed...I was too harsh on the person who had started the job...I do sincerely apologize, and pray that not only he, but all of us have learned from this hasty judgement I made; I both apologize and ask for forgiveness, that my transgression be forgiven. You are right in that God makes all situations work together for our ultimate good. One of my favorites is Genesis chapter 50, where Joseph forgives his brothers for selling him into slavery, and tells them that God turned their evil plans and actions into blessings for all-the Bible says it better than I ever could!

19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?
20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

Nice rescue! I wonder why they dumped the comb in a box. Seems like they'd have at least taken it with them.

Bees are very much effected by events such as a removal, and believe it or not, it causes them a lot of stress. That stress can lead to the demise of the colony, but fortunately these bees were able to bounce back. In general, the hives with a lot of bees tend to recover when disaster strikes. These girls did so well, I harvested over 4 gallons of honey from them just a few weeks ago. Talk about tough bees. It was not a new smoker, but once I get a new bellow fro it, it will bee practically brand new. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Big hive! Are you having to deal with Africanized bees in your area yet? That was my first thought when you showed the Life Alert...
The Life Alert is an on going joke between the 628 Dirt Rooster and myself, and I like joking around as much as I like bee wrangling. Fortunately for us in Southeast Louisiana, the Africanized bee is not present, and I won't be sorry if I never find out about them. Thank you for the videos. I tried beekeeping for a few years here in Arizona, but now 100% of our feral hives are Africanized. Some local beeks work with them, but I can't recommend it in an urban setting like mine. So... I'll just get my fix watching you work with your girls!

Great video Mr Ed, but July in Louisianan and it's only 60F? We have had a really hot summer so far in the UK, by our standards anyway, even up here in Scotland it's been in the high 80's which is hot hot hot for us.
diecast jam. That was back in march. July here i Louisiana is 90s yesterday July 12 was 93 no wind and 74% humidity in Baton Rouge the state capital city. About 70 miles west from Lacomb.
When I made the video in March, it was 60F, now in July, day time highs are in the mid 90's. Keep cool. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Is there something that you do to ensure that the area you cleared in the ceiling does not attract other bees? In years gone by I regularly had to have bee colonies removed from the same place even though the only thing left each time was a bit of wax where the combs had been attached
It is a very difficult task to prevent bees from reinfesting an area they have previously been. The best defense is making sure there are no entry ways for bees to find. Fortunately for this location, that job is not to difficult to achieve. im so angry with who ever was there before you, and just destroyed most of the bees and most of there hive, useless clueless people that should not be doing that job, they couldnt even handle it and left it half way through, thank god for people like you, your amazing everything you do for those little ones to move there little home somewhere else for them, not just come along and destroy them, god put people like you on this earth for a reason, if i were you, i would be really really proud of yourself, from an animal fanatic... Our first removal we told the guy it was outside our skills. He said "I'll do whatever it takes" and starts tearing up the wall. Then after a couple of hours he lost his nerve and said to stop.
Needless to say it was an absolute failure. Now he has a torn up wall AND bees. And now we lost a day working in 95º weather and didn't accomplish anything.
I have one or two unfortunate bee removals in my history as well, but if we can learn from them, hopefully the event will not bee repeated. It's just unfortunate the poor bees suffer for our ignorance or pride. Thanks for sharing your story and for watching. God's peace.

The prior bee wranglers who came before you need to watch your videos and take notes! I barely know what I'm doing and could've done a better job than that! Those poor bees deserved better and they got it when you come through for them Mr Ed god bless you keep up the good work!
