Thanks to this review, I went out and bought this radio. It does remind one of a 1980s boombox. Not the greatest shortwave radio ever made, but a nice addition to my collection.
Great little radio. I got one as a gift for my 53rd birthday. I have an Lasonic 930i, but this having cassette player on it is wonderful. I had several boomboxes in the 80 so this takes me back to a very happy and fun time.
Kudos to QFX! I very much appreciate how they are giving you a fine mixture of old and new technology. If there's ever going to be a revival of interest in shortwave among the young, I think hardware like this could play a major role. Thank you for posting this!
So, I have J-220BT version of this unit, and I was wondering (since the manual seems a bit vague on this detail), can you record a cassette tape onto a USB/thumb drive? I don't believe it can but just thought I'd ask. Thanks. Nice video.
hello, have this exact model, but i purchased that to record K7 from MP3 ... the audio from the MP3 pendrive is awesome ... however, when i record it into the K7, the sound quality becomes really poor, noisy, etc ... any tip for improving it ?
WON'T YOU PLEASE PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONS ON using the four buttons. How to record using those four bottom buttons for the USB and MEMORY CARD, especially "how to pause while recording via the USB or Memory Card"? Thanks in advance.
Question? In order to make a cassette mixtape, all I have to do is put a blank cassette in the boombox press record on the song I want n it automatically gives me the song I want?
Can it record in stereo or is it in mono? Does it have an adapter with power chord, because if it runs on battery and you use it as a recording tool, it will run out fast.
Hello sir, do you think you could please upload a video demonstrating the tape function more like recording voice (if possible) and stuff like that? Thanks.
Would you if not already, do a video on recording to tape testing the microphone built in. For say reference of musicians who like recording them selves or bands.? Just a voice test unless you have some one that does music. I would love to hear it.
I had this for over 3 years. It still works but the cassette player starts to slowly lose pitch after 2 minutes of play. Happens when it's plugged in or on battery.
this specific model J-21U doesnt have the record ability for the usb or sd. the J-22U has the usb and sd recording feature. you can record onto cassette via the radio, & usb/sd playback.
donde las venden porque lo que yo conozco de esta marca qfx son bocinas grandes amplificadas con blut sd card y usb pero esta radiograbadora se ve bonita y muy completa se parece a las antiguas de 1980 y 1990
Looking forward to buying it! I have 2 bomb boxes and I want a 3rd one ! ☝️ Oh and just a tip ! Bass is pronounced like “base”. Not Bah-SS”. That’s a fish Lol
Just ordered one of these so I can jam out to my tunes while unicycling. Walmart is apparently selling them online for like $25 with free in-store shipping, so that's what I paid. Modern bluetooth speakers are more convenient but really lack the awesome style of my childhood, so I pretty much bought it for the style. :) The only other retro boombox I've seen is the Lasonic i931x GhettoBlaster, which is way more expensive (although probably has a little better sound). Anybody know any other modern boomboxes with an 80s/90s style?
Radio is fine. Actually purchased a few years ago for the purpose of the tape player.' For one reason or another i never even tried the tape player for at least 2 years. Today i tried the tape player and it doesn't work and I'm stuck because the guarantee has run out, and I don't remember who I purchased from on the internet. That's what happens when your over 85 years old. Now what should i do?
I have bought one of these for myself plus a few as gifts. While most are still going strong, one did have a defective tape unit. As you have seen yourself and through comments, the tape deck appears to be the most likely part of this unit to fail. Walmart has the Sony CFD-S70BLK for $58, and it has both tape recorder/player and CD player. Based on reviews I have seen it might offer more robust construction. While we’re past the day when Sony reserved their name only for premium quality goods (we’re both old enough to remember the excellent Trinitron TVs), I think they can still be depended upon not to slap their logo on total junk. Obviously with this QFX you’re rolling the dice to a degree in order to pay half the price of the Sony, so it just depends how lucky you feel as far as whether you try another one of these or pony up an extra 30 bucks or so for the Sony.
On my J-22U model, it says "convert radio and cassette to mp3 files." This is the only reason I bought this. Not sure about j-21 models. There are instructions in English and Spanish. English is not the first language of the (Chinese?) instruction writers, so it is confusing. I managed to record my voice onto USB, but now I can't remember how. (Frankly, the controls don't feel that great; you can tell w/the lack of subtlety on the volume.)
You use antenna without pulling out the carrying handle ,it blocks access to the buttons in the top. And you got to extend antenna fully to get good wave of course. But you right about cvoletty,it is surprisingly good for $30-60 they sell this thing on e-bay,amazon department stores and etc. It is out there under 2 different brand names such as 'SuperSonic' and 'QFX' difference is only in little details of design, both comes with or without Bluetooth option,so pay attention if it matters to you.)) But overall it is a good radio and it is really good for catching FM waves in my area ,loud and clear!
I just ordered one off of ebay for $36 and free S&H. The model # is QFX J22U, and the one I found records to mp3 as well as to the cassette. It will also let you record from the cassette to mp3.
The most important feature: converts cassettes to MP3s. Good value; but the inserted freq scale is off! For ex, tune in to 1450 but dial shows 1600. That's aggravating but hey!
I actually was a little surprised at the size ... the pictures make it look bigger. but it's still a nice sized radio... quite heavy once you put 4 D cells inside
Your Thumb drive is not formatted correctly, works without any issues, same as using a SD card starts automatically you need to have it formatted on FAT32
Are you sure you've got mp3s? I had originally dropped files from iTunes, but unless you convert them, they're not mp3. Once I converted and played from USB, it worked fine.
Mine arrived broken. Fragile plastic casing. The internals were all over the place and I was able to reweld it. I also noticed that the antenna wasn't even connected to anything, it's fake but theres a coil inside that I rewired into the antenna. Made it work but internally it's cheap and ebay refunded me so it's a win for me. The hande is really fragile as well, if possible carry from the bottom and not the hande b

Looks like it should have stereo sound, but it does not. It's mono (same thing though both speakers) Even the tape head is the 1/2 track (mono) type. Fun little box just the same, though.
I bought one of these last year and it wouldn't play my tapes so I returned it in exchange for a new one of the same model and it worked fine for the first month but then it started eating my tapes wtf it was a great radio for the time that it worked properly and I'd like to buy a new one but I don't trust them anymore
you have to clean rollers that move tape and sound head(sensor)with strong alcohol. It is collecting dirt when playing cassette so tape stick to it and chewing tape.
I was wondering why the reception on my radio was below average, So I took off the back cover, Bad quality control on my unit, The main antenna wire from the circut board to the telescoping antenna, Was just coiled around the little screw holding the telescopic antenna to the radio. And the insulation around the wire was not even strip, No wire connecting the antenna !!! What a joke!! But I got working now, And is receiving good now.. 73s
bad-ass radio but remember if that system don't have a line out or aux you always cant buy those cassette tapes whit aux line input cheap at Walmart end hookup pc or another electronic device ......
Searching the internet (Amazon) I found many variations of this radio all with the same part number. Prices ranged from $29 to $79. Also various color schemes. Tpm
I got it on ebay from a US Seller... I also seen once with the Coby name on it .. that looks exactly like it. Radio was $25 + about $20 shipping ... so it cost about $45 US
This video DOES NOT DETAIL WHAT USB thumbdrive GIG SIZE FOR MP3 SONGS THIS RADIO CAN HANDLE? 2Gig, 16Gig? Anybody able to get info on what USB THUMBDRIVE GIG SIZE this radio can actually use, please post it on these QFX cassette retro 1980s mini boombox videos, because even the Google links to the QFX operators manuals PDF online wont show what size GIG USB THUMBDRIVE this radio can make full use of, the *so-called quality* of this reproduction of 1980s styled is so bad, the cassette player belt drive stopped working after 1 or 2 months, no wonder a guy used a steamroller to flatten it, thats where the USB thumbdrive info comes in, with the cassette player broken and now useless(*unless the cassette bay is rigged as a continuous playing COB extra bright L.E.D backlighted dummy cassette prop, having no tape spool on the reels for a bar mantle display ;)*) , The USB THUMBDRIVE PORT WOULD BE THE ONLY PLAYABLE OPTION LEFT AS A MP3(4?).
This retro 1980s styled boombox *REPRODUCTION BOOMBOX NOT WORTH ATTEMPTING TO RECORD FROM CASSETTE TO USB THUMBDRIVE-you will be majorly disappointed to learn this USB RADIO *CANNOT RECORD FROM CASSETTE TO ANY USB THUMBDRIVE, this radio cassette player is very deceptive and also *DONT HAVE NO INPUT RCA JACKS for Auxillary device linkup to like an Iphone or other cassette player* also this radio cassette player's cassette deck is very fragile, i only played tapes for less than a month before the internal belt drive(and pullys) messed up...this QFX radio cassette player wouldnt be so bad if this retro design boombox had more rugged durability engineering behind it like the original LASONIC 920 and 935, the CONION C-100f, and several of the Soundesign radios having the dual channel VU meters that was able to hold up longer than their 30 year life expectancy.
DO NOT BUY THIS! I got one for xmas a couple years ago from my in-laws. It sounds like garbage and will eat your tapes. It also only plays in MONO. It is worthless. Go find a retro boombox.
I bought the exact cassette radio 2yrs ago and has worked flawlessly without any issues whatsoever
Where did u buy?
Thanks to this review, I went out and bought this radio. It does remind one of a 1980s boombox. Not the greatest shortwave radio ever made, but a nice addition to my collection.
It is not the best radio ... but the mix of all that is included .. is nice and I actually love it

Winfield Doner What I like of this radio also is the fact that it reminds me of the 80's boombox that I had when I was abt 14 - 15 Years old ..
I like your analog short wave radio.
Kudos to QFX! I very much appreciate how they are giving you a fine mixture of old and new technology. If there's ever going to be a revival of interest in shortwave among the young, I think hardware like this could play a major role. Thank you for posting this!

Mike Zur No this is only for a USB thumb drive with MP3 files on it
If you purchase a USB bluetooth dongle to insert into the USB port - you can.
It has a aux jack

What is the diameter of the speakers? This is a really cool boom box!
+yoyo3856 about 4 inches ... sound is not too bad ... bot like a real good boombox ..but it is cool

Edward Belcher cool
Does this radio have a DSP chip?
I think it does for tuning
what type of batterys does it use
D
Can anyone tell me how to get mp3s off of cassette tapes?
Awesome saw this on Amazon and think I want one now.
Its a good vintage throwback.
The most important feature: converts cassettes to MP3s. Good value; but the inserted freq scale is off! For ex, tune in to 1450 but dial shows 1600. That's aggravating but hey!
Is it stereo?
no
It looks smaller than I thought it would be. Great find and it will be interesting to see how it performs on shortwave. Thanks for sharing.

Go find a retro boombox.
mine been working well for years
I heard that radio was a piece of garbage
