    Perfect!
I am doing this today in my bathroom. I am a DIY guy with more tools than sense or skill. Yeah, I have a multi tool. No, I did not think to use it for this job. You probably just saved me two days work, brother. Thank you!

  • @neilreid9005

Glad I saw this but a bit too late- used a hammer and chisel and ended up replacing the bottom vertical foot of concrete under the 4" tiles in a walk-in shower. I have one of these multi-tools and they're awesome. Looks like a pretty minimum amount of thinset was holding your previous tiles. Good luck and many thanks for this vid- a great DIY trick for the future.

I tried using a tool like that on one of my bathrooms. I swear the builder used liquid nails or some equivalent. There was no way these tiles were coming off without taking a good chunk of drywall with them.
I have some experience working with tile. I’ve done floors, back splashes, tub surrounds. I had to basically cut the drywall with attached tile out. Replace cut out area with new drywall and retile. I’m pretty sure I’ll be facing the same issue this week when I tackle our master bath while
    I’m off for the holidays.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Ive experienced the same. There are so many tile adhesives. Much of the time its easier to just remove the drywall. It doesnt cost much to replace...saves time and you can break off entire sections of the wall so less cleanup

I tried using this on the kitchen tile backsplash behind the stove and it didn`t work anything like this . In fact I quickly gave up because I was having so little success . I went back to using a hammer and various scrapers of different sizes .They worked fairly well although in some cases I went through the "thin set" and ripped the paper covering the gyproc . I will need to do some repair work before I put the new backsplash on .

Just the video I was looking for. I recently bought one of those oscillating tools for another project and I thought it was an awesome tool! I'm removing about 12 tiles toward the bottom of my shower that are bulging. I'm hoping not to find a bigger project upon doing that. I would also add that this did not work for me with ceramic kitchen tile over drywall. I gave it a solid 30 minutes and got two or three tiles partially removed with the aide of a hammer. Ended up just using a hammer and destroying drywall in the process. Multitool came in really handy with cutting out existing drywall, though. So, every situation is different. Probably depends on the wall, the tile type, and the age and location of the installation

The thinset or mastic under each of those tiles appears to be only about 20% coverage. That's likely why they come off so easily. It was impossible to get my tiles off without having all the thinset and a 1/4" of the wallboard coming off with it.

If it is in a tub/shower area then you should really remove the drywall as well and put a suitable tile backer board in. The reason being is you want something water and mold resistant. I use a product called Dens-shield, it cuts just like drywall and it has a built in moister barrier that will stop moister at the surface.

How can I "break" into the very first tile to insert the blade to pop the first one? I have a Dremel 4200 - not sure if I should use that, or perhaps use a hammer and a putty knife. Should I remove the grout on the first tile? Also, do these tools (like the Multi-Max) have accessories available to sand the drywall after I remove the tile? I will be using some kind of "peel and stick" backsplash or something similar so I imagine I need to remove any old residue from the old tiles . Any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks all.

Here in the US, "oscillating tool" is the common name. Of course, each manufacturer may have their own name. Should be able to get one at any home improvement store, looks like they even have them at Walmart here. Lots of choices in blades for different uses too!

That's the tile I am trying to replace. Where did you toss them?

I just threw them out. If you're looking for a 4" white tile you can pick them up at any Menards for around $0.11 a tile. They will match up to an older tile just fine.

+Alison Lewis I'm in Dallas. I'll look it up. If they have gold speckles I'm in business.
