      Have you ever tried Wild Wing Cafe a wings Restaurant in South Carolina? Ever since I've gone. I can't forget it. A big selection of wings and soup (chowder like soup) is pretty good.

      I stayed at the Atlantic View Motel in this video in January of 2020,then I paid the rate of $35 a day,but the rate was only $150 a week so I stayed a few weeks,the rooms were old school but it was clean and the staff was nice.Finally settled down in an old vintage senior mobile home park in Zephyrhills Florida but that's a different story.

      Adam, 3 minutes in the guy's car and you broke it. 🤦‍♂️ The N.J. shore town Wildwood has a lot of those old motels of that same style that is known as do-wop style. Unfortunately in recent years quite a few have been torn down and replaced with condos. If you ever get up this way, you should check it out.

    This video brought a tear to my eye. My dad had a 1967 Corvair, it was my first car I drove to and from college in 1998. He died in 2016 and my mom JUST got rid of it last month, it was garage kept in “mint” condition. Lots of memories with that car ❤️

    Spent many of nights at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion as a kid! There used to be a ride that was in the shape of a rainbow and it would go up so high that you could see the ocean. The view was worth the nausea it induced when it came down- LOL! I remember some of the vintage hotels when we used to go to "senior week" in the 90's. They were cool looking but they for sure drew a wild crowd. The rooms were basically 4 walls with 2 beds. There were no rules at those hotels and I sometimes wonder how I made it out alive at the end of the week!! Thanks for the video and the walk down memory lane

    These were great little cars. After Nader's book, there were lawsuits. When the dust cleared, the Corvair was vindicated but it was too late. GM had decided to nix it due to low sales. My Dad had a 1967 and was an insurance agent in WV. He drove that thing in all kinds of conditions. There are videos on TH-cam of the Corvair testing where they took them on WWII Jeep testing tracks and really put them through it. Enjoy the car!!

    That was interesting and fun. We had a great time in Myrtle Beach back in the late 80's. Enjoyed some really good seafood. We stayed at a high-rise ocean front hotel with a really great indoor pool for that time. I was into some money at that time and my van was brand new customized. I will have to save if I want to go back. We will see!

    Strand is a Greman word and means just plainly the beach, that's all. I had a chuckle as the little window nob fell, i was "ooh fudge" lol it's a pitty that they destroy so many old and pretty buildings, i can't understand why they don't try to save stuff like that! Thank you for the retro-tour! See you tomorrow.

      Because their old and depleted. Seriously would you consider taking a vacation here with dilapidated infrastructure just to go to a beach if so why when you have so many other places that are modern and don't look like Norman Bates just spent the night there. 🤔

    • @annegallagher4005
      @annegallagher4005 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@robertwiley8458 lol i understand your standpoint but they shouldn't let it fall to such despair in the first place, conserving a style, you still can renovate them to make them modern inside, instead of just bulldozing over, that's sad (i know, it's cheaper but does the great America need to be that cheap?) But hey that's just my European brain thinking!

    In my home town we have an area which is called The Strand, down by the river front. And in my current home city, London, there's a street called Strand, which was the river front road before the Thames was narrowed with its Embankment.
    Strand: noun -
    the shore of a sea, lake, or large river.

    One of my core memories as a child is staying at the Sea Mist on family vacation and walking through that underground tunnel to go eat breakfast. My favorite part of the underground mural was the divers painted on the walls. There is also a nearby small water park that I used to enjoy going to. Thank you so much for showing a picture of what the tunnel used to look like, very nostalgic!

    My mom worked for the Sea Mist Resort for 30 years. The little pools were known as the kitty pools they were for children to play in.

    I'm so old that I clearly recall our family "Every Other Year Vacations". One summer it would be to Myrtle Beach while alternating the next year with a trip to the mountains of North Carolina and/or Tennessee and the various tourist attractions there. On those Myrtle Beach trips we stayed in the old "Splinter Village" motels that were located just about two blocks west of the beach itself. What we all think of as "old style" motels, gas stations, etc. that have been abandoned, repurposed, torn down and replaced with much newer hotels, or have fallen into disrepair due to management/ownership disinterest were pretty much state of the art back then. Neon was a major thing along "The Boulevard ". Traffic was bumper to bumper 24/7 from about April through September and everybody looked forward to a visit to The Pavillion which was THE place to be in Myrtle Beach. I think that the beating heart of Myrtle Beach was The Pavilion and when it was torn down the city lost a huge chunk of its charm. But times change and vacation/resort cities like Myrtle Beach must change with them or die. But back to the present: I had no idea Jack Black lived in Myrtle Beach or that he had a TH-cam channel. Jack Black you ask? Just look at him. Who else could he be?

    We were here in the early seventies on our honeymoon. All this old stuff was modern in those days, even the car. Have a post card of the Motel we stayed at and looks like the one going to be torn down now. Lots of memories, made a few trips back, but lots have changed too. Like the tragic passing of my wife. But really good memories of how it was.

    I had a red 62 corvair monza that used lots of oil on each trip. One of the" unsafe at any speed" issues was the fact that at around 50 mph the front end would lift off and you would lose steering control. Very Scary. Smashed up the car while in college. Girl friend at the time sued me. Love the video Adam. Thanks

    • @RetroMyrtleBeachGuy
      @RetroMyrtleBeachGuy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that was actually an issue regarding tire pressure. You had to make the front end at least 10lbs less than the front. I get her up past 70 and she hugs the road. The camaro fender also helps with downforce but not nearly as much as the tire pressure. I actually did a whole video about when I figured that out and how much better she drove after that! I bet your 62 was nice!

    I had a 61 Corvair back in the mid 60s. It never killed me but it definitely did have strange handling dynamics. I was once following a Corvair on the road and watched it go out of control and fish-tail wildly down the road until spinning out. It wasn't just "a rumor". The problems were fixed on the later (65-69) models but it was too late to salvage their reputation. Actually I liked my Corvair and lately find myself looking on Ebay at restored examples.
    Thanks for the retro tour :)

    My Dad LOVED ❤️ his Corvair. He had a later model since it was more rounded not as squared off as this 63. He had a VW beetle before the Corvair. The only time I heard my Dad swear was about Ralph Nader getting the Corvair illegal. He said it was political and American carmakers said having an engine in the back was unsafe. Untrue. The Corvair was extremely good on gas why my Dad commuted two hours a day to work in it. And fun to drive and economical to maintain. My Dad cried when he had to take his Corvair off the road. It sat in a memorial in our backyard for a long while. I didn't know there were any restored ones around. They had Corvair clubs back in the day late sixties early 70's.

    Fact check: The '63 Corvair was NOT America's first rear engine vehicle, it was the Tucker 48 out of Illinois. Credit is due to Preston Tucker on his innovation and forward thinking of seat belts, steering following front light and pop-out windshield glass in accidents.

    My family used to go to Myrtle Beach every summer from 1990 to just recently. My last year going was 2007. The Pavilion was the greatest little amusement park. I believe there’s a little documentary here on TH-cam, it’s worth your time looking back.

    Grew up going here with my fam and definitely spent some wild beach weeks here as a teen. We don’t visit often these days, but I’m happy to see there are people out there advocating for preservation and taking pride in the design history. MB is kind of a hot mess overall, but could be a fairly special place if they had a design ordinance.

    The retro aesthetic is unbelievable in this town!!! Looks like they are going to be spending huge amounts of money redeveloping and all of the old buildings will be gone forever. They do this here in Australia anywhere there is beach and old retro style buildings all get torn down in favour of new buildings built by Chinese investment companies... Glad you were able to document it Adam it will be on the internet forever

    The railroad was actually active until the late 1980s. It was established in the 30s to support the growing number of people going there to vacation. The area was originally called the Arcady when the first resort was established in the 20's. Myrtle Beach came into official existence the year after the railroad arrived. There were efforts to resurrect the railroad as late as 6 or 7 years ago. Other areas like Charleston have retained certain lines to use as day trip/historical type railroad trips. I will disagree with the Retro guy regarding the old Pavilion all day and I worked there for a summer. They were always updating the rides and maintaining the classic ones. I never felt unsafe there at all. But to each their own. It certainly has not turned out well for Myrtle Beach since it's dismantling. Honestly it was more a case of the land value going sky high. The company that managed the Pavilion had like a very longterm lease... and eventually they saw the cost outweigh the profit. The city should have intervened but by then they had already hitched their wagon the Hard Rock Park idea..... sad... truly sad.

      @@TheDailyWoo You're welcome. I was literally born with "sand in my shoes"... (I was born while my parents were stationed at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base... which was considered a plum assignment at the time). That was a saying around the area... Once you get Myrtle Beach sand in your shoes, you will always return. My mother must have said it a thousand times

      @@TheBioExplorer back in the early 80’s, every time we came to the beach, my dad always drove down Kings Highway to show us the military housing. He was Army and I guess he loved the memories of when he was stationed in Texas. Thank you for reminding me of this.

      The area where the Pavilion amusement park seems so small now that it's a green space. As a kid I remember it being so huge. Also I remember many of the rides were an upgrade from standard carnival rides. At one time there was even a river raft ride complete with rock work. I usually go to Myrtle Beach once a year for golf and I really miss the Pavilion. So many great memories of Myrtle Beach in the 80's were tied to the place.

    Man, I always fantasize about driving an older classic car, like a basic VW van or an old Mustang or something, but since I know absolutely nothing about cars other than than how to check my oil or change a tire, I feel like after a while all the added maintenance and harder to find replacement parts would eventually overtake my enjoyment.
    This vlog today reminds me a bit of what I loved about "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee", but darn, even on that show Seinfeld's cars were always breaking down mid-filming. So whenever I do come across a still-running classic car out on the streets, I just sort of assume they're all mechanics, haha. Gotta appreciate the effort though. I always tend to applaud them as I drive by, because at least I get to enjoy the cars they all take the extra time and care to preserve, right? 👏👏👏 cheers.

    Awesome video Adam thank you both. Chevrolet had actually adjusted the suspension before the book was even published. You could also very easily retrofit the original 2 years. Much of the problem on those initial 2 years came from ignoring the tire pressure staggering front to back.
