Is that a fireball Plus ? Oh and it has the same wind down sound of the d740x and some of the other quantum drives. Too bad it cannot complete the seek test! Oh and the heads bouncing! I had. D540x do that when it was failing as well. It was a maxtor quantum drive. Failed SMART too

Ha il motlre andato, e forse non solo quello. 😢 I quantum erano buoni all' epoca.

That's a shame! I quite like this era of Quantum's, their late models have been quite good to me. I must admit, these Quantum's do have quite the loud click of death compared to a lot of other models. Certainly sounds very iconic! That really was.... quite the symphony at 5:25... Beautiful shot of the actuator arm.

I have a bad feeling the "Reckoning" of vintage drives will be this year. As many drives go through their service life.

It is sad but I agree with you... The community already had a few die this year!

at 2:36, for some reason it spun up to 7800 or 8200 rpm… Not a regular speed for modern drives!

The reason it does that, is because at first it thinks that the head lock which is actuated by the air from the spinning platters didnt unlock, so it speeds up to create a stronger airflow which would actuate the head lock in case it was stuck, but in this case the heads themselves are destroyed.

Quantum drives spin up like that if they can't complete their seek test in case the headlock gets stuck

there seem to be a lot of videos of dead drives floating around lately.

Sad to see a failed Fireball Plus LM....they seemed to be really nice and reliable drives. Do you have any backstory on this one? Was it working or have you had it for some time already and it was already bad? Also I really love the design and amount of care that went into the inside of the drive, especially the beautiful blue ring on the spindle Quantum did, it really is incredible how precise and well they manufactured that drive and the technology used to create it....quite amazing.

This drive got internal contamination from having the seals punctured and me not covering them up with tape before I powered it on.

@@thegeforce6625 Ah that is a shame, I've never actually heard of seals getting punctured before so that is quite strange...
