    The best type of boat to have is the one your friend owns and runs. I've got a boat like that, lovely little 19 foot bowrider. It's been bliss.....never need to worry myself with bills, repairs or upgrades. I can highly recommend it!

    My parents bought Steve Curtis's old family home back in the 80's when I was a kid. The garage was extended to make it long enough to fit his powerboat in.

    Oh this brought back memories as a small boy and thank you so much really.
    I can remember going each year with my Dad on his boat from the Hamble into the Solent in the late 60’s to watch this. The field then seemed much larger (unless memory……) and there were a lot of privateers. There was I think several classes and recall an entry from near to us which was a ‘Fairey Swordsman.’
    It was a race much like Le Mans and Monte Carlo with similar followers.
    Thanks for the memory.

      Yup, definitely used to be a far bigger event. There are some good vintage film clips of early races on TH-cam.

    My dad always piloted of the Marshall boats for CT then CTC back in late 60s and early mid 70s. It really was. Big race field then with many more entries than todays event. It was highlight of the year. They used to run to the Skerries bouy then under Berry Head and around bay to Torquay. I also had pleasure/fright of being driven by Steve Curtis in the Solent on a very choppy day. Rally driving over the water and very hard on the back and knees. Not for the faint hearted

    As a teenager Nick. I lived in the block of flats on St Lukes Road. The block with the pagoda roof. It had a wonderful view of the race and great to watch, all so Daddy hole plain. Seems to be many more boats back in the early 70s though. Thanks for the great video .

    my father used to offshore race for decades. We went to worlds 6 years in a row held in Key West Florida. We won our class twice in 3rd place over all. And one year the seas were really rough and all of the big million plus dollar boats dropped out saving themselves for another day but getting the points they wanted to place where they wanted. So that year my father and two other ran like hell until the last lap last leg of the last lap lol the boat broke down lol. We were 4th overall taking over 3rd. Would have been a great year for prize money that is for sure. But alas the boat had other plans. Top speed on that boat in the early 90's was 86MPH. Clocked on Lake Erie. Totally amazing for a 32 foot power cat with 3 400HP outboards. Back in those days no GPS was available there had to be a boat with giant flags on it and anchored for the whole race no matter conditions. I have been on those boats as a kid when the chop was throwing the boat left to right all day long at a high degree than sailing a monohull lol I got more stories if you want to hear.

  • @olavvalsvik
    @olavvalsvik ปีที่แล้ว +3

    We used to have the Class-1 Offshore here in Arendal, Norway, and they raced around an island several laps so they were much closer to land. Fantastic show. 🙂

      I went one time when Steve Curtis was throttling the Spirit of Norway boat. great party weekend.

  • @CharleyGeorge
    @CharleyGeorge ปีที่แล้ว +1

    at 19:14 when you see them cracking along it is probably about 70 MPH or so. I have done that for 30 to 40 minutes straight. Man you get beat up really bad. Your throttle man is really important and the navigator is second most important. The throttle man makes sure you don't get launched out of the water as the conditions change and he also changes the speed based on the conditions as well. If you throttle man is not experienced enough you break a lot. If your navigator doesn't keep an eye on rogue waves, the gauges and spot things on the race route your in trouble as well. The driver needs to take direction from the navigator and the throttle man and look for himself as well. Really fun especially on days like that when if your boat holds together you get first over all and a ton of points you were not expecting lol

    I watched the start of the race, in the Solent, about ten or twelve years ago. More to see because they had a rolling start - just up on the plane for a bit, then they hit the throttle as they crossed the start line. Iirc there were about 15 Class 1boats taking part. In the early days of the race , my late father - who was the importer of Bertram boats - crewed and navigated for Violet Aitken in her Bertram 31, Ultra Violet. In 1966, we were taken out for a run by Dick Bertram in Brave Moppie, a 36 (?) foot Bertram, specifically built for offshore racing, which he'd brought to Europe for the summer, he went on to win the race that year. Amazing stuff for a young kid :)

    Nick, you have excellent taste in watches, regardless of budget. I've fought long and hard to maintain an active watch collection consisting of a single piece (looking past the pair of vintage models too old to wear but too nostalgically precious to part with). After watching you (see what I did just there?) wearing a few striking pieces in your videos, though, the itch to get myself a colourful dial of some sort has become stronger and stronger. I love my one-and-only, but it is extremely conservative after all. Your green Spinnaker is simply beautiful!

    • @AQUAHOLIC
      @AQUAHOLIC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funnily enough, it wasn't my first choice, they do a very striking blue one, but it's different and I really like it. Looks and feels more expensive than it is too.

      Permit me a chuckle as well. If we (in our powerboats) did that to a sailboat in our harbour all hell would be let loose. Shouts would be raised “mind your wash”, “slow down” and an array of non smiling yachtsmen.
      You could tell it was the man in a hurry to get to his racing start line and didn’t give a monkeys about anyone else.
      I was hugely impressed by Nick’s calm demeanour and lassez faire attititude. Me, I’m more likely to point out (in the politest way possible) that “the overtaking vessel keeps clear”. And by that I mean slightly more than about 3 metres off the bow.
