West Highland Way Day 1--Milngavie To Drymen

  • After delays due to Covid for over two years, the day has finally come when I leave for Scotland and my thru hikes of the West Highland Way and Great Glen Way. I will be carrying everything I need on my back and I will be experiencing these trails by way of a combination of wild camping, campgrounds, youth hostels and guest houses.
Come with me as I embark on the journey of a lifetime-from Florida to Scotland- and take one entire month out of my life to experience one of the most magnificent places on the planet. My first stop is hiking the West Highland Way beginning in Milngavie to Fort William, where I will begin the next leg of this great journey, the Great Glen Way. After that I will be heading to the Isle of Skye. At the time of leaving Florida, my last few days in Scotland were unplanned. As most of my life is heavily scheduled, this was purposeful.
As someone who has dealt with mental and physical struggles, this trip was desperately needed. It is the first time in decades that I am able to focus on nothing but one foot in front of the other, what I am going to eat, do I have enough water and where I’ll be sleeping that night. Years of high stress, insomnia and the aforementioned mental (and physical) struggles have led me to re-evaluate my life and what I need from it. Many people (including myself) are finding that society's idea of what we need for happiness isn't all that it's cracked up to be. And sometimes, we discover the our place in it isn't exactly what we thought it would be. Sometimes we need to get back to simpler ways.
Sometimes we need to take a walk.
I hope that by sharing my experiences that I can show other women that they, too, can do hard things. That adventure is out there. That they are more than their jobs, their families and the (perceived) limitations they've often put on themselves. That it is not only ok, but necessary to take time for yourself and your passions and to reclaim who you are as a person. Life is meant to be lived.
Thank you all so much for your unending support and I hope you enjoy my journey.

Hi there Shan, we spoke about this trip a couple of years back and now you're here. Well done. I'm stoked with you and it's only part 1. I can feel your joy at being on trail. I'm looking forward to seeing how this unfolds. I just kicked back and let it roll. Fantastic stuff! See you in part 2. Mark

Well done Shan, especially on very little sleep, great video, I walked the Way with a crowd of 10 friends at the end of April, I think we hit the jackpot with the weather, I think the only rain was on day 4 of our walk, the scenery continuously got better, we were all pleasantly surprised and we live here 😂, and best of all, no midges 👍

Thanks so much! We were likely out there at the same time. I loved the no midgies! I did get a fair bit of rain but lots of lovely days, too.

Hi from 'Robin Hood Country' (Nottingham) in England. I watch quite a few TH-cam 'adventures in Scotland' and indeed, just watched a lovely couple from Connecticut (search for Nicky and Ryan on the AT) - it's so refreshing just to see a 'foreigner's first view' in comparison to the the usual more local TH-camrs - so my congrats on what you've achieved so far and I'm guessing you're going to complete the 'Way' in the fullness of time and in your own way and at your own pace. You've got some great and rugged scenery in front of you, notwithstanding the entrance to Glen Coe and its famous 'Buchaille Etive Mor' - they say it's the most photographed mountain in Scotland. Stay safe, be happy ....... and tell all your US outdoor friends where they should be heading at some time in their own 'outdoor adventures'. Take good care.

Hi Shan, really enjoyed both West Highland Way,and Great Glen Way. Good tips great views and vista's. Here's my tip for everyone, Ordinance Survey Maps. Possibly available as a trial?. Or by monthly/annual system. It is truely fantasmagorical. If you play around with it for West Highland Way, it also uses Google maps, you can do a Fly Through, it shows km markings, and altitude profile, follows the paths fairly well, sometimes from the route you can see the path. It is slow ish but an Eagle eye view of,the route. Truely Truely a m a z i n g. Long i know no other way of getting message across. Ciao

Great video! What time of year did you do the walk? Looks like early spring from the daffodils and lambs. I'm doing it in mid-April next year, so I am quite interested in the weather you encountered. It will be my first multi-day, long distance hike, so I'm spending a year training. Can't wait for the rest of your adventure!

I did late April. No midges but def some nights below zero. Right after I left the bluebells and heather really exploded. Thank you for watching!
