Looks fantastic, thanks for the details, I too, have the stair tread tool, and would not have attempted this project without it. Thanks for your video.

Did adding the new stair tread on-top of the existing tread make a noticeable difference in step height?

No. All treads are raised. The only tread that is higher at this point is the very bottom.

I’m hearing you should put the risers on top of the treads to prevent future stair squeaking and rubbing, is this true?

I am working on a similar project and cannot for the life of me figure out why nobody on TH-cam removes existing treads before putting new treads down. Putting treads on top of existing treads changes the rise of the first and last step, leading to a trip hazard (the bottom step rise is taller, while the top step rise is shorter). The existing treads on my staircase popped right off making it easy to lay the new treads down right on the stringers. Plus, there is no need to cut off the nosing and remove any staples since you're just throwing away the old tread. Is there a reason you decided to just go over top existing treads?

My lowest tread wasn't tall to begin with. I'm now at 7" height first step which falls within code.

@@diydozier3205 Good to hear. I appreciated the video. Still wondering why I seem to be the only one replacing the entire tread with new hardwood treads. Makes me think there is something I'm missing that everyone else knows!

@@robkittredge6031 There is less surface area to glue when attaching to a stringer. By leaving the old tread you can drive some screw through it then glue the new tread resulting in a strong bond and solid step.

Why did you have to trim the nose.

Because you can’t put one radius bullnose on top of another. The front of your step would have two curves…. You can build out the riser to match the existing bullnose but that would invoke more labor and materials since you’d probably need 5/4 lumber instead of just 1/4 inch finished plywood for the riser
