    I appreciate your use of math to figure out the radius. I am spoiled having been in CAD Design for my career, the computer does it and I don't know the formulas. I also like how you used a prototype chair to aid your design process. Great work.

    @MemphisApplegate I'm guessing by the size and use of carriage bolts and 2x4's it's meant to hold considerable weight. That step has me a bit concern...perhaps it should be reinforced underneath with L brackets

    First, I want to say that your description on this video is great. Grilling Chair would be a good name for this. The normal deck chairs are so hard for some of us to get out of and the "bag chairs" like you showed at the beginning can be a real challenge.
    I loved this video as, I am sure, you knew I would. Your explanations of using this formula were easy to understand. You also made the point of how necessary it is to use these calculations to get the proper arcs in your pieces.
    I do have a suggestion for an improvement to this chair.......a cup holder for your beverage. Of course, you are probably much more civilized than me and have a proper table to set your drinks on.
    The colors that you chose for this chair makes you think of a forest cabin. It is beautiful. Something tells me that these aren't the last two you will be making.
    It is funny, when you first showed the prototype, I was thinking that you would need some lag bolts at those critical points. You must have heard me. Hahhahahah I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. Winter has come to East Tennessee. Most of the fires are out. It is time for the big man in red to come visit us soon. I better be on my best behavior.

      1. Funny, I was so excited that I thought of something unique! No way. Not only are kingsize deck chairs common, but counter height chairs are the new thing. Heck, you can buy them at Walmart.
      2. I never assume you will like my work! Rather, I assume you will be nice to me; you will gently point out my foibles. For example, you once ask if my wood storage cabinet would be "adequate for my future needs." Of course you were right, as it isn't big enough for a guy putting out a new project every week. But you were nice about it.
      3. You are so right about those calculations. Frankly, I wish they would have been teaching algebra and geometry in woodshop classes in 1962, as I'd be better educated today.
      4. The chair needs a cup holder for sure. Thanks for being nice about it.
      5. My neighbor already asked me to make him one, so you are correct again.
      6. Part of good design is providing expected elements. We expect to see those carriage bolts. Who cares if they are needed.
      7. I'm loving the winter. Loving it. Sometimes I have my heater and fan running at the same time. Sometimes I put on my jacket and stand outside for no reason. Today, I sipped my coffee as my pickup warmed up and defrosted my windows. Sad I know, but this event was the highpoint of my day.
      8. I agree. You gotta love Christmas!!!! Even heathens like me love Christmas!!!
      9. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope On-grid shows up. I get so paranoid when my normal friends don't show up.

      ***** 1. What is that old saying about there is no new ideas?
      2. I may be nice, but I know that you are a craftsman and always put out excellent work. Of course we can all improve on some things. That doesn't make the work any less.
      3. Unfortunately, the importance of math is not specified enough outside of the Math classroom. Different sports utilize mathematical formulas whether they realize it or not.
      4. Cup holder ...again, not nice. Civilized people do use tables. Hahhah
      5. The word is out! You are a man who's talents are in high demand!
      6.Dang. I thought I was a genius for thinking you needed the carriage bolts. Turns out it was just my brain telling me that is what is usually there for these chairs.
      7. I will give you winter. I know it gets much warmer there in the summer than it does here. However, I will survive this winter until warm weather. I may have to sneak away for a cruise or something this winter.
      8.I am finding myself enjoying this Christmas more than I have in quite a while. Heck! I am just loving life in general these days!
      9.I have wondered where OnGrid has been. I hope he returns. As long as I have internet, you have me. Hahahhah

    To make the curves, l would bend a thin piece of wood and tie the ends with string like a bow, saw Norm Abrams do this on TH-cam,,.Regards Alf

      I didn't make plans, but if you google "High Deck Chairs" I bet they are out there. th-cam.com/video/hrh4LXOYwu4/w-d-xo.html There are also some good videos and you may like the link.
      Good luck on your build.

    is there a plan avail for these deck chairs?????

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, which is the reason I made two. The prototype was built up by trial and error, then the other one was copied from the final edition of the prototype.
      I wish I wasn't so lazy in my old age, as I could learn some drafting or Sketchup, etc. A few folks have asked for plans associated with some of my projects, and I'm always so disappointed to say no. All of my work is one-off, with only amateurish drawings, which I often show in my videos.
      For me, part of the fun of making stuff is the experimentation and invention aspect of it all. Don't recall exactly, but in this case I believe I reverse-engineered this chair design from a picture I saw on the internet. Google "Tall Deck Chairs," and you will see what inspired me, and also see some plans for sale.
      Thanks for watching and commenting.

      I think I will start using metric measurements when making calculations. Fractions are a but tedious and I have had problems.

    if you want to impress someone you could have put the bolts in right instead of backwards

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty harsh Marshall!! But I've made way bigger mistakes than putting lag bolts in wrong. Why not check out a few of my 300 other videos, where you will find many much grander errors. Check out the gun stock checkering videos, if you are looking for real incompetence.

  • @marshalllawhorn7874
    @marshalllawhorn7874 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    forget all the bullshit math, he was just trying ti impress someone,,, just sit a 5 gallon bucket up on the board an be done in one tenth the time

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Checking some of my other videos you will find plenty of 5 gallon bucket circles, and it works great. However, if you are going to draw an elliptical cutting board within a certain size blank, then you need the math. And thank you for thinking I was trying to "impress someone" with my math, as frankly the only math I know is what I've had to learn around the shop.
