One thing that I missed and should have led off with:
"1.2 These Terms and Conditions of Use apply to any use of the User Generated Content or Mods by the user" meaning that these rules apply to anyone who downloads and uses said mod.
One part of "using" other people's mods in your maps, or asking for permission to use / edit - is something I think is on Giants to solve - it's almost impossible to "contact" other modders to ask permission, unless you know them directly. At least for mods on Modhub, Giants _has the ability to contact_ any modder - but they keep that contact method to themselves. I'd love a messaging / contact ability to be added to modhub, which could either be restricted to creators (those who have logins to ModHub) or be public - and allow modders to contact each other. I've been told by Giants QA staff more than once to get written permission from other modders who's code / mod i was referencing, but they tell you that... without providing means to do the same; in my mind, that doesn't make sense.
Great video, and great discussion on making sure as a modder we're doing things right!
Agreed, it's very hit and miss when trying to contact certain modders. Some are easy, some are not. Awesome idea though! Adding a contact link in modhub would be great! I'll have to look, but I remember a discord channel that had a ton of modders registered and it made it very easy to contact any one of them. Well, you could send a message easily ... if you get a response is another thing altogether, LOL!
this was so needed the amount of battles ive had trying to explain to other up & coming modders that its our work and they cant distribute it,yes i do encourage editing for private use to learn or play in the game but just taking stuff is not called for...i think this video needs to be circulated with in the community to explain to them that stealing ppls work is not the best way to start modding for the game, you do get ya lazy modders who do this kinda thing to try get to the top or get noticed.
Some people just don't get it. When you have TH-camrs like Farmer Bob teaching this type of thing to people just getting into modding ... well, it certainly doesn't help. FB himself doesn't feel like he's doing anything wrong. Up and comers don't know any better and they find themselves "learning" all sorts of bad habits and incorrect information from someone that doesn't have the slightest clue. And then like you said, other people are just lazy and don't care one bit. I feel like it diminishes the community as a whole. When people are are being taught bad information, bad habits, and things like mod theft being ok ... what kind of work can you expect from the people being taught these things? These are not the types of things TH-camrs especially, should be promoting.
Lucky we have some good people like yourself to teach us how to do things in the modding world and in the right way too, i think people just take the lazy route instead of learning the correct way. For me, once i start modelling something, i have to finish it no matter how hard or frustrating it might be and at the end of it just like you were saying its something you can be proud of, even if not 100% perfect, because you can always go back and touch it up once you've learnt how to do it. I did go and find a particular video that you mentioned in your last video about this stuff and gave it a thumbs down for ya, i thought that was really crap and actually didnt realise how much of this was actually going on.
Keep up the good work 👍
Do you have a tutorial how to create normal/diffuse/spec maps for a new fillType texture? If not, I'd love to see one with your teaching style (beginner)
I don't have anything specific to fillTypes, but the process would be the same as any other texture. It could be done in materialize or any other image editing software. The trick to any Giant's texture is channel packing the specular map. We're going to get deeper into textures, so I'll cover this a bit more. I'm behind on videos at the moment due to health reasons, but I'll be back in the saddle soon enough :)
well said Bauer I agree 100%. modders are what make this game what it is, if they decide to stop making mods because people keep stealing their work, that would be the end of Farm Sim...
on the point of tutorials, is there any chance you could do one on how to make houses and sheds in blender??
Yup, I can do that :)
Hey Brummie I’ve just recently started making sheds and houses in blender and my advice is just start into it with a few videos tutorials in the background, it used to take me about 2 days to build and texture a shed , now I can make a rounded roof shed in about 1 hour and textured and I still have lots to learn so I expect through more experience I’ll get even quicker
@@FSLandscaping thanks for the tip, but most of the tuts i found don't really go from start to finish, or go into too much detail that goes right over my head
@@BrummieFarmer I can help you with a bit of advice, first work out how to move the camera around by holding the middle mouse button and shift middle mouse button, then work out how to change the size of the square cube by dragging the edges, for cutting you use a modifier called the Boolean, check out videos on how to use that with that other stuff I told you and you half way there to creating a mesh
@@FSLandscaping I do know some of the basic stuff from playing around in blender, it's more detailing the buildings ie. getting windows/doors and things to actually look properly and texturing using atlases... I have tried, but just can't get them to look right...
What about if someone alters a map and put it on a server and say you can't download the map nor play on it only if you with there patrion page is that ok or not
I would say that's perfectly fine. You're not redistributing it and making it publicly available. You can have 1000 people playing it, but since it's controlled by a single person and not available for download, it still constitutes private use. I'm sure some would disagree, but that's my two cents :)
Hi, i'm working on a map (fs22) and i needed palm trees. I used the Cali palms from the frontier map but i can't find a way to contact the map maker (zero oito) to ask permission to use them.
I'm not even sure if he made these palm trees because i also find them in a mod from ALiEN JiM but i also can't seem to contact him
What should i do?
It's just a stupid tree but it's kinda important for my map 😅
Maybe you know forums where these guys are still active?
I haven't seen the tree, but I venture a guess to say they were converted from the FS19 palms. I'm positive about that, but there's a good chance. Since it's just a deco object and an unassuming and insignificant one at that, I wouldn't stress over it too much. I would just use it and leave a note in the modesc giving a nod to the potential author, but I don't think even that is entirely necessary.
Unfortunately I don't know of any forums where they are active.
@bauerbrown with deco object, do you mean like a house or a pile of wood? Because they do work like normal trees. They can be planted, cut and sold.
I feel like someone put in the work to make them work so i need permission.
I really make it a thing in my map to grow en sell them 😅
Thought it would be easyer to contact someone when i started building my map. 😆
@@fpvnico If they can be grown and cut then I guess they are a bit more than just a deco object, but still not an incredibly huge deal. Sometimes creators are easy to track down, sometimes not - it's hit and miss really. The best I can say is lots of Googling. I'll have to find the address, but there was a discord that was nothing but mod creators and map makers, it's possible they registered there.
@@bauerbrown yeah, gonna give it one more try to contact someone while i finish the map but as you say, i'm not going to stress to much about a tree. If they want to get contacted about their stuff, they would make it more easy 😆
Im still into the video, but a point of confusion and something that is potentially very scary to me; is Giant's linking their rights to use your mods to mods submitted through modhub or to any mod created in their editor? I would guess this means the mod contains an i3d file. If this is the case, isn't it akin to Microsoft saying and document created in Word...or say Excel...they can use?
Both. It's akin, but then that would depend on the MS TOS and I'm not about to get into reading through that one, LOL.
It stops the dodgy modders from making mods for profit( as some have done in the past) as Giants can get the website shut down as it’s against t&cs
@@FSLandscaping And yet there are some popular paid mod sites that remain open? Not to mention Giants "sponsored" DLC like Pumps and Hoses or the one coming up? Not arguing with you, I just wish they were more consistent with their policy. I am not too bothered either way about this as much as I think it is a slippery slope when ANY software manufacturer tries to lay claim to things created by their software in the private sector. I have nothing against profits and protecting your intellectual property, but this is a two way street here. What kind of BS is saying the creator retains intellectual rights but the software company can use their creation at will? Though I do understand that most of this is just lawyer jive anyway and that Giants do treat modders fairly. I just don't like the precedence it sets.
@@seanobrien7169 yeah they are actually quite good with modders I’ve found, the bigger problem at the minute more so than mods being sold is the illegal mod and map conversions being done by people and because they are free there isn’t a lot can be done, I know of a few map makers who were converting there own maps on,y for some idiot so release their illegally converted version all over the internet first , they actually quit and I’m pretty sure you know who I’m talking about , I rekon even more will quit in the next instalment of FS due to these clowns
