I am fairly certain root cellars were one of the most prevalent and early “pantries” and had everything to do with food preservation over winter and nothing to do with social status or skin color.

My pantry is hard work!!! I'm putting up and canning all the time!!! My pantry is in my spare bedroom. If you come visit and need to stay over night you'll be sleeping with the potatoes and carrots!!! LOL!! I am retired since August and trying to live on 1/2 my previous income. I clean every day!!! Bathroom especially!! It makes me sad that when my children were small I didnt have the opportunity to be prepared other than shop sales..LOL! I just didnt know. Now I do!! Now my only problem is shelving...
When I was just married and had 2 small children I had to apply for food stamps. I remember going to the food stamp office with my babies and waiting to be seen. Sitting in front of me wass a woman with two children also. Her children were in diapers and t shirts..Pampers were so wet they sagged. She had plastic flip flops on and her feet were absolutely black with dirt..even under her toe nails. This was the 70s too. Babies had green snot hanging out their noses.
    I was horrified.
You can be poor..nothing wrong with that!!!
    Being filthy is uncalled for.
Soap is not expensive..heck the American Natives scrubbed with sand!
It costs nothing to wash and stay clean.

I very rarely comment, just giving thumbs up now and then. However, this was beyond ridiculous. We are full time farmers. In addition to our field crops, we have a garden, chickens and cattle. I put up food through canning, dehydrating and freezing, all year long. It would be very unwise to not do so. Our crops were wiped out this last year due to drought. Just like every generation before us, preserving insures food security during tough times. The only people who would see this as privileged, classist or racist, is someone who has never truly worked a day in their life. They need to get out of their desk chair and find out what a true work day feels like starting at 5 am and finishing after dark. Is it a privilege to work until you’re drenched with sweat and wearing blisters? Damn straight! Is it classist? Lol yes hard working class! Is it racist? Last I saw the fields, plants, and animals couldn’t care less what color/ethnicity or or religion we are. Neither does my God. People like this are so determined to keep stirring up trouble they don’t even make sense. Sorry for the rant. I’m just SO sick of this behavior! Patara I love your channel. Ty

Professors are professional students, they never hold real jobs or work a hard day's labor, only learn information repeated to them from others of the same mindset. I don't mind that there are those among us that would choose to curate history, language, science, as a chosen life endeavor, but when those areas are twisted, warped, bastardized and biased to particular agendas and one sided belief systems it's no longer knowledge and has become something dangerous and damaging.

My mom said that she hunted for things to eat-there were 11 children in their family and their daddy died in his sleep during the depression. The older children worked and helped their mother financially with the younger ones. One thing her mother would not allow was charity. My mother said that a charity brought a basket of food and there was a nice ham in it and she couldn’t believe it when her mother said “take it down the road to so-and-so’s house because I think they need it more than we do.” They had pride back then, pride to find a way to do for themselves. We sure could use that amongst our people now. Now they expect the taxpayers to support them and all the babies they can make even though they have great birth control now.

My aunt and uncle on my dad's side went through the Depression, lived in a cold, Iowa, one-room shack in the beginning. Then, through working at a local slaughter house gathered enough $$$ to build a modest ranch style home. To this day, I remember visiting them in the 1970's. Stacks and stacks of canned goods were all over the house, including the dining room and living room floors. The Depression affected them so much their whole house was a pantry.

I called them on it as I was older than them and didn't put up with garbage. Only classes received a grade of C in. Price for speaking up and speaking truth for younger ones in class to hear. I was only adult, over 21, in class. Still speak the truth at 72. Stick with your major so you can speak truth to young ones in class. My grandma also always says “soap is cheap”. She raised six children in poverty and she survived and kept them fed by cooking basics from scratch and foraging. No matter how poor they were, she took pride in keeping their hair cut neatly, everyone always washed and clean. I cannot understand nowadays, so many people do not take pride in being clean and neat. Both in personal appearance as well as their home.

Well, I can honestly say my pantry wouldn't impress anyone! It's gotten to the point where I usually just open the door and toss stuff in...I keep planning on getting in there and cleaning it all up but I've just out grown it. I'm trying to figure out some other area to use but haven't as of yet. Now my long term pantry in the basement is much better organized...I've even color coded the totes. Just need more shelving. My Dad was born in 1932, dirt poor (literally) and his mother (my Memaw) was the most organized and neat person I've ever been around. It does all boil down to pride: pride in what you do, pride in what you have, no matter how much or how little. If you look around today, people don't even take pride in how they look anymore - they go to the store looking like they just rolled out of bed. Seriously, this so-called professor needs a hobby or something. Maybe she should start Canning, gardening, dehydrating, etc. I think she would find she'd be a lot happier.

Would like to share some information about cans of food
My food service friends and military friends have said that if push comes to shove
... that if the can is not severely damaged or compromised and you look at the date
... you can safely add 10 years to the use of the food in the can
I am not saying to abuse this practice, just saying that it means starving or eating
food from a past dated can, you probably won't die
I have opened cans that were 10 plus years old and not compromised
    The food was fine
