Im a native hindi speaker. I stand with our people in the south. You cant impose a language on anyone. India should celebrate its diversity rather than making it a tool to fight over. I also request the south Indian community to maintain peace over the issue and not discriminate among the north Indians studying, working in your states because they have nothing to do with what an ignorant man says.

Why should we adhere to such push when I love my mother tongue Telugu? I can speak in Telugu, Hindi and English. Though my second language was Hindi while studying and speak well in Hindi, I really regret not learning Telugu as this has caused a huge barrier in the level of Telugu I can speak in my state. As long as one can speak in their native language and English as global language that should suffice the requirement. What is one supposed to do by learning Hindi as I don’t see any benefit in learning that language. In the past 25 years since I learnt Hindi I have never once used this to read or write in Hindi other than speaking to few Hindi speaking people. So what good is that language when it is hardly any use. Now my kid has to learn 4 languages when he comes to 5th standard because of Hindi being made mandatory for CBSC syllabus. English as a mandatory first language , Spanish as international language, Hindi as mandatory language and his native language Telugu.

I studied in National institutes for almost all my life. One thing, I have understood clearly is that NorthIndians are least interested to learn any south Indian language, although some exceptions exist. However, they speak to us in Hindi, even though many of us can't understand it. There are some good guys, who start speaking in English directly. The irony is when they are in south Indian states, they preach about us not learning Hindi and say that south Indians are not interested in learning other languages. Some guys even argue that Hindi is a national language. I mean when they are in South Indian states, don't you think that you have to learn the regional language rather than telling us to learn Hindi? Still, many south Indians are well accommodating and most of us tolerate them and even try to learn Hindi to not create a toxic environment. I hope India stands for its diversity.

That aside, if you want India to break apart into pieces by shutting down people's preferences, cultures and languages, this particular Indian has no support for you whatsoever. At the same time, equal opportunities are also given to learn our own Mother Tongue language, even though Mandarin is spoken by the majority. The far sightedness of Mr Lee Kuan Yew in the 1960s to have this bilingual policy in place is commendable. Learning a third language is by our choice only. We live peacefully, because no language is deemed "superior" to another with English being the connecting language, and yet preserving our own cultural heritage via our Mother Tongue.

My case is also same. I was born and brought up in West Bengal and fluent in Hindi,English and Bengali, but had no knowledge of my mother tongue Telugu, which I learnt later. Still I express my thoughts in those above 03 languages and write in Hindi and English. But I am sorry to say, when non-speaking people are being pushed even though mildly as a starter, I feel pained, disturbed, alarmed and uneasy. There is a world beyond North India. Already many of the policies have created division on the Iines of caste, religion, region. So, further division between the brothers of South and North on linguistic basis is not desirable and would do no good to the nation.
