    This video is phenomenal! I feel like a lot of people just publish a list of 5 laptops without going into too much detail (and I get that this works for most people), but I hate spending money without actually understanding what it is I'm buying. I felt like I was back in a college lecture, and LOVED this presentation! Thanks so much Ben!!

    I sent my rig to the shop cause i was having problems with it, I'm not the most tech savy in terms of PC tinkering but i do know quite a bit. It's 3am and I'm youtubing/googling possible replacement parts for my rig, looking at the specifications of some parts i was like "huh, I don't even know what half of these means". So now here i am, a little knowledgeable, knowing all these different terminologies and their purpose. Thanks for explaining it in such a way that's easy to understand by breaking them into pieces. Going from the top all the way to the bottom. Subbed!

Even with one core working on one thing don't forget about all the other hundreds of things running in the background automatically. I'm still shocked to even hear that a dual core still exists lol. Android OS on phones and tablets is even worse! All kinds of apps working and updating in the background even if sitting there looking a picture only lol. Now tablets and phones are coming with 8 cores.....almost like a mobile Xbox in your pocket....pretty cool!

    Ben- your explanations of CPU ,cores, threads, are brilliant! I’m sold and subscribed your channel. I have one question- In term of speed, should base clock speed to be considered or the turbo speed value ? As I understand ,base would be the better unit as turbo will throttle back and eventually slow down. Is this right?
    2. 12 cores 16 threads processor @ 3.4 ghz - turbo max 4.7 ghz, what does it mean? Total speed of the 12/16 processor base speed is 3.4ghz? Or each core has base speed of 3.4ghz ( total 40.8 ghz which seems wired) :). Thanks

    Takes a few minutes to sink in but I actually understand it now. My current CPU is a 4 cores/4 threads, that's basically just 4 cores. I guess that's the bottleneck when I'm trying to do some heavy stuff with multiple programs.

  • @joshuastanlick6217

    I just run everything real-time priority on a 13900KS. Ultimate Performance with core-parking fully enabled. I just play games, and although the PC is not useable during benchmarks like R23 or Passmark, once they complete, the scores increase significantly and everyday use like gaming has the absolute lowest delta for processing. Running everything real-time priority on a computer whose 32 threads are rarely saturated is just fine and almost 100% harmless, for a noticeable improvement in performance that I'd say is even better than what a hefty overclock would grant on its own. I run my 13900KS stock save for Re-BAR and XMP in BIOS. I use Process Lasso for the priorities, CPU sets, and CPU affinities. I didn't touch the actual Windows Scheduler at all.

    So... If I don´t multitask why do I need more cores? Assuming they're at the same speed, why do I need 6 cores for 4k editing?over 4 cores. Isn't it 1 core used only anyway?

    • @NoEgg4u
      @NoEgg4u 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Alexandre Fernandes, even if you are not multitasking, your computer is multitasking.
      There are numerous background processes that are running (also known as services). If you have only 1 or 2 cores, then they will compete with your efforts with whatever you are doing.
      Also, video editing is one of the types of processing that can bring a computer to its knees.
      Not all single things that you do will use a single core.
      Video editors will generally use however many cores you have, and will even use the processing power contained within your video card (GPU -- graphical processing unit).

    I can't tell you how helpful this video was! As well as your other videos I've been binging on today. :) I recently had an issue where Photoshop kept crashing on me, as I was trying to edit 50+ TIFF files. To add to the frustration, with all the TIFF files open, I couldn't get on the internet - Chrome just didn't want to open. Thanks to this video, I'm starting to understand why. I have a 4 Core / 8 Thread processor currently. I'm now on the hunt for a laptop that can handle my current needs as a designer. What would you recommend as a MINIMUM for cores and threads? I'm a graphic and web designer. I do heavy photo editing and often layout 90+ page books. I have PSD and INDD open simultaneously, sometimes AI gets thrown in there as well. I also need Chrome open and maybe an FTP client and text editor, at a minimum. I also like to dabble in video, though I haven't had any video projects from clients...yet. :)

    As far as I know Adobe Photoshop has had multi-CPU (SMP ) capability as far back as 1998 and maybe earlier. I ran a Dual Pentium Pro Intel Motherboard on my Desktop computer at home in 1999, and had Compaq Proliant and IBM Servers with 2 and 4 CPU's when I worked as a Server admin for IBM Global Services 1996-1998, and we had multi cpu Dell servers at Intel Online Services in 1999 and again in 2006. Also a single threaded Program will never use additional CPU's or CPU Cores.

    Hello there, I'm a graphic designer and I'm planning to build a budget pc. I'm currently stuck on choosing a processor. I'm aiming for a mini-itx build and I need to consider the height of the cooler for the cpu. So here's my dilemma, should I go for a 4c/4t cpu (which has the included cooler just right for the case/chassis) or go with a 4c/8t cpu but need to purchase a separate cooler. Again, I don't have that much budget. I usually only open windows explorer, chrome (about 5-25 tabs at times), photoshop, illustrator, and silhouette. So, that 5 processes at most.

    the example at the end you give is all like x core 2x threads. I'm thinking about getting ryzen 3500 vs 3600. their both 6 cores, but 3600 has 12 threads (3500 only has 6 threads). How much different would that be? Their both 6 cores, so I assume multitasking is fine, but the threads thing, does that mean the 3600 would run software and render the result faster? if so, by how much?

    Ben, I seriously can't thank you enough for the valuable info you've shared with us. I've been researching extensively (putting it very lightly lol) the last week or so for my first ever PC build, and this video has saved me a ton of money in the process! Was considering the Ryzen 9 3950x processor with an expensive x570 motherboard, but I feel as if the 3900x will be plenty good enough for what I'm doing in premier pro.
    The questions that I still need answered is what is the best solution for playing back footage via the timeline in Adobe Premier without any lag? I currently have a mid-2014 macbook pro and recently subscribed to Adobe Creative Cloud, and I CAN NOT begin to tell you the frustration associated with editing footage and scrubbing the timeline in premier pro. So, what would be your best advice on a PC build that's strictly geared towards video and photo editing with Adobe? Am I better off with Intel or is Ryzen going to combat better clock speeds for an overall better performance??
    Dear PC community: I Would greatly appreciate any suggestions!

    Sir as you say one core will work one task at a time so when we use adodepremier for video editing how many tasks work during this single software and why processor with more cores work better?

    I thought your point about the specific application software needs to be written to accommodate multi- threading was important. Old apps less multi threading, newer apps more multi-threading. When did Windows become multi-threaded?

    As I'm watching, I'm saying to myself, "Holy crap, I actually get this now!!" But I do have one big question: at 3:09, you say that a 2 Core processor at 2.0 GHz will be slower than a 4 Core processor at 4.0 GHz. Assuming each core is utilized, does each Core in this scenario takes 1 GHz of power? And if so, wouldn't that mean that the comparison of these two computers would result in the same exact speed of processing, just that the 4 core can do 2 extra things just as fast as the 2 core computer?

    • @kaimizan
      @kaimizan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thats not how cpus supposed to work, because the 4 core processor would each have a clockspeed of 4.0 Ghz as per explained in 1:55. A quad core at 4 Ghz is much much faster than a dual core 2 Ghz processor, hope this helps!

    I was considering building around a 3950x, but it doesn't look like I need too.
    I'll be editing some 8k, but if I can save some money, then I would prefer going that route!

      Video editing is one type of processing that can bring a computer to its knees.
      Video editors will generally use however many cores you have.
      For occasional video editing, you can save some money.
      But for frequent editing, and especially for editing large video files, you can never have enough cores -- and you can never have enough power in your video card, too.
      Depending on the size of what you are editing, the rendering time could take between a few seconds to a few hours (or even days, in extreme situations).
      Having more cores reduces what might have taken 2 hours down to 30 minutes, etc. Or even from 10 minutes down to 1 minute (it is no fun waiting even 10 minutes).
      Cheers!

    I have Hp elitebook revolve g3 i7-5600U @ 2.6 base speed. I love my labtop very much but i am confused from your video as much as it is very vey useful video. Ilalong 3 yesrs my labtop was very capable as i thought but one time i got excel sheet with a big amount of data like 30.000 rows with multiple columns. I experienceed a shocking low performace or speed when applying somthing to all cells like font or formating ....etc. I tooks 5 minutes to complete what i apply. Do you think my very speedy 2.6GHz dual core is slower than 2GHz 4 cores i7 these days specially as i understood from your video that if i have one task like excel it will be enough for me. I am realy confused what to do and i am afraid that if i upgrade i may lost money whithout solving my problem.
    Thanks for your video i will by extremely greatfull if you hepled my to decide specially my labtop are blazing fast with any other task i do other than excel.

    If I am running only 2 programs at the same time. There's a dual core with 4GHz and 8-core with 3GHz. Does it mean that the dual core will be faster? Or the 8-core will work together for the 2 programs?

    So if every core runs at the same clock speed, is this the same case for the threads? Will 2 threads in a core share the same clock speed, or do they have to share? In other words, if a core was at say 2.8ghz, will the threads be more like 1.4ghz if they're working at the same time?

    • @BenGKaiser
      @BenGKaiser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The threads simply assist the cores, they are not actual operating cores. They are helping process the information before sending it to the core to complete the task. I hope that better explains the situation.

    You are not explaining what a core is. You are explaining what a cord does. There's a difference. A core is a series of transistors laid out on a board. The closer the transistors are to each other the faster the processing is dependent upon the clock speed. The difference between what a core is and what occurred does is essential.
