Yeah, but after playing something like Lego marvel that actually had a fairly large open world, (For a Lego game) and a much more detailed roster of heroes and villains,(he even mentioned in that review that you can play as moon knight....like really...moon knight) it would be a huge let down for the things that were starting to define what made the Lego superhero games (Apart from the charm and comedy) weren't in the newest installment of the DC side of it.
***** That's like comparing a television animated avengers show to the avengers movies, well they could both be amazing shows/movies, there's a clear story/production quality difference, the arkham games are much more complex graphically and in story line, for example I just finished arkham knight and there were soooo many moments in that game I was on the edge of my seat and so many intense combat scenes that made you feel epic for winning and beautiful cutscenes and scenery. The lego batman games are tons of fun to play and very humorous and one of the best feelings is finishing it 100% and having all the characters. but at the same time it's not the same. I don't know if that all makes sense but hopefully you get what I'm trying to say

Conan and Daffy Duck being in this is actually a plus for me. Also the open world portion of previous Lego games hasn't been all that great... I actually prefer small levels because the controls for flying characters are still not that great and the game stutters anytime too much stuff is on screen.
Sooo... you didn't like it because you expected something else?? You were disappointed that the Brainiac fight wasn't in a DC location like Metropolis. You were disappointed that the pacing was off, in a LEGO game, when they decided to throw in cameos of Daffy Duck and others that the parents playing would know and relate too. You were then disappointed about not having it more open world so you can visit certain places, so you gave it a 7.8. But when COD: AW campaign can be beaten in 5 hours and have the villian openly declare war on the UN as soon as he got into the UN, throwing suspense and possible cleverness of the plot out the window, then well I expected nothing less out of COD so who cares because the multiplayer is just SO AMAZING, and so 9.1/10.

Also the Lego franchise has always had a history of being critized by IGN for it being more of the same and not improving as much as a nearly annual franchise with how many games they make of different properties. On the other hand, while Lego goes from Marvel to DC to Star Wars the COD franchise has been set as a military shooter just with a time jump for reskinned guns, the newest COD is the first time in years they actual pulled something new like lazer guns. Myself and many have grown up on the LEGO games and have grown to love them, but now it is being bashed still after all this time while the younger generations "game to grow up with" , like how it was for us and Lego games, is getting 9 and 8.8's. That's the problem, is that enough clarification?

I think this game is a step in the right direction. I'm glad that there isn't a huge world you HAVE to explore to find the missions. Am I the only person who want's a return to the simplicity of the earlier LEGO games (Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones and the original Lego Batman).
dntm123 Partially agree with you, but the open world has become somewhat of a neccessity with lego games, and i think its good cause it extends playtime, where as with a simpler formula you're describing i think would grow tiresome after a few days. Thats where this game faulters. It needed more life in the hub worlds you could explore, and especially for Oa (the "Gotham city of this game) as it was supposed to be the biggest and main focus of the hub world.
I just want a batman game like the original, there 3 stories with six levels where you play as robin and batman. You then unlock the villains side and play through as them
I don't feel like being a game for kids makes this game free from criticism. Lego Marvel Super Heroes was an extremely enjoyable game and I highly recommend it, but it was also a game full of problems, and problems typical of the Lego series too. I'm not going to pretend that it's flawless and the best thing ever just because it's targeted at a younger audience, and the same goes for this Lego game too.

I fully agree with the review. Completely disappointed in the lack of open world when I played the game. The title and previous entries in the Lego Batman universe suggest that it will be even more open world than those previous games. "Beyond Gotham" ends up being "little pieces of other places and no Gotham." The worlds they give you to play on are incredibly bland, stale, and lifeless even though they are meant to be sci-fi it really detracts from the game. Kids game or not it is disappointing. Lego Marvel Super Heroes was also a kids game made by the same company, and it did everything this game does and more, and does it all better. The only addition to the franchise I liked with this installment was the use of costumes.

As much as I love this game, I have to agree with the fact that we get freakin' weird cameos. And my belgian friend didn't understand the Conan or the Kevin Smith references.... Why have them there in the frist place? With Marvel, Stand and Clark Gregg as Coulson make sense because they're beloved parts of the universe or the fan-culture, but Kevin Smith? I also miss not being able to go to Gotham or anything, as mentionned, but I get why they left it out... We already saw Gotham and it'd be redundant... However, Metropolis would be fun. Still, as a Lantern fan being able to free roam Lantern worlds was a PURE BLAST!!!!! :D A pure fanboy treat.

Some hate it because they may be young generation and simply not for them .. some may not like the genre . I liked flying trough new york rather than being stuck in the watch tower for the most part that would be like lego marvel keeping you in the hangar the whole time not that exciting.
I just bought this game because the gold edition was on sale for 18$, and ive gotta say, the amount of DLCs for this is sweet! LEGO Marvel Super Heroes was amazing, no doubt about that, and the free roam also was amazing. But one thing everyone seems to be ignoring is that no matter how big the free roam area is, it gets boring no matter what. Just look at GTA V. I love that game, but after a month of playing it, it just became the same things over and over. The same goes for LEGO Marvel. Everyone should just accept the fact, or just pray for a game to have a free roam of everywhere on Earth, where you can go in every building, and do anything.
Hi Ign there is a glitch I can’t fixed. I have 99.99% sine the game and I check all level and the planets and I’m done all of it. It says in one with the rage level I need to find one more golden brick but I’ve collected all of them in that level. Please respond
Fun fact; there have been more Lego games this year than Mario games. And all were below the traditional Lego standard for me (like releasing Lego The Hobbit before the third film comes out and then releasing the final films as DLC? Cmon WB, Lego The Lego Movie came out just after it, could you not have waited a little longer till December or heck even January or February to release it?). As a longtime Lego fan since Lego Star Wars, this makes me dislike the WB takeover of TT even more than before.
aero roger True, I like Disney's films but recently they've been making some poor decisions, at least when it comes to Star Wars. Cancelling 1313 and Clone Wars and then saying the extended law isn't canon. Thats just a slap in the face to fans. Hopefully Episode 7 (which again is stupid that its not called Episode 7 at all) will be good. Heck I even liked the prequels so to me if I don't like 7 they've ruined Star Wars for me, even though many fans hated Episodes 1 - 3.

I have to agree with this review. I always enjoyed the free roam in the recent lego games. And when I heard they were taking it out I actually reconsidered getting this game. I'm glad I didn't buy this. I expected way more.
i found this to be a fun game and would recommend it to fans of the DC universe. how ever it isn't perfect,so i'll mention some issues i came across. can get stuck in gaps from jumping and flying. worst was when getting the spacesuit for batman.i switched to robin and he was still inside the machine. could not do anything had to reset. the VR story stage where you need to get to brainiac. on the second part (there are 3) there are several blocks on one of the sides of the current challenge. and if you fall down on them...there is no way to get out. since you cannot jump high enough to escape back to the main area...need to reset game. i had 1 random crash, runs fine usually. - and that's it. it works well enough most of the time.
If you want to get technical, we've already had Lego Marvel, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones games, all of which fall under Disney. A game starring more Disney-esque characters doesn't seem out of the question.
They swapped out the open world from Lego Batman 2 in favor of the new gameplay mechanics, It honestly did disappoint me how the only full scale Lantern world was Oa I was even more disappointed after learning that Oa was the only planet where vehicles could be used but with these minor letdowns I must say that I still did enjoy the game, the ability of being able to equip the different suits without having to go to the equip points like in Lego Batman 2 was something I always wanted since the first game, also I loved how they added much more characters like Zoom/Reverse Flash. The game's not bad but 7.8 because of the cameos are kinda a BS reason.
There are noticeable signs of being rushed and it is not as polished as other LEGO games! The Story Mode and the Level Packs are the best part of the game
I'd admit that coming from Lego Marvel Superheroes, this game is a tad bit restricting you but in the small scale is densely packed content. Maybe it's because Lego games are my guilty pleasure, but I enjoyed this game immensely. We all have our own reviews, thoughts and opinions, I'm just saying mine. I enjoyed the story and what happens in it. True, it did become a bit hard to follow but I got back on track. *SPOILERS...maybe* The idea of all the Lantern emotions projecting onto villains and heroes was funny and seeing each character behave in their ways made me LOL for reals. Having to go to each Lantern planet was fun and after the story being able to go to them again in a bigger scope was great. I understand what he was saying about the inconsistent tone to it, but for pete's sake, it's a Lego game. It took itself seriously when it needed to, and it does have weird side quests to say, like Kevin Smith and Bat-cow, but they were side quests that were funny. The character roster is great with everyone you can think of, even freakin' Polka Dot Man for christ's sake! This turned out to be a long comment, so all in all, yes, this game is not as good as Lego Marvel or Lego Batman 2, but it comes damn close for me. Feel free to respond with any "hate" or love you might have with my opinion, if anyone is still here anyway lol.
So disappointing. The open world was a HUGE step down and none of the story took place in gotham. Besides the opening title scene, it didn't feel like a batman game at all. I hope they make a Justice League game after the new movies

As much as I love this game, I have to agree with the fact that we get freakin' weird cameos. And my belgian friend didn't understand the Conan or the Kevin Smith references.... Why have them there in the frist place? With Marvel, Stand and Clark Gregg as Coulson make sense because they're beloved parts of the universe or the fan-culture, but Kevin Smith?
I also miss not being able to go to Gotham or anything, as mentionned, but I get why they left it out... We already saw Gotham and it'd be redundant... However, Metropolis would be fun. Still, as a Lantern fan being able to free roam Lantern worlds was a PURE BLAST!!!!! :D A pure fanboy treat.

Each to their own , I praise it so much because I been a Lego fan for over 25 years, I played neatly every game of Lego and also build Lego in brick form .
Some hate it because they may be young generation and simply not for them .. some may not like the genre .

I liked flying trough new york rather than being stuck in the watch tower for the most part that would be like lego marvel keeping you in the hangar the whole time not that exciting.
Lego batman 2 and lego marvel are better than lego batman 3 because they both had open worlds and the new one didn't !!! That's what bugs me!!!!

I just bought this game because the gold edition was on sale for 18$, and ive gotta say, the amount of DLCs for this is sweet! LEGO Marvel Super Heroes was amazing, no doubt about that, and the free roam also was amazing. But one thing everyone seems to be ignoring is that no matter how big the free roam area is, it gets boring no matter what. Just look at GTA V. I love that game, but after a month of playing it, it just became the same things over and over. The same goes for LEGO Marvel. Everyone should just accept the fact, or just pray for a game to have a free roam of everywhere on Earth, where you can go in every building, and do anything.

Hi Ign there is a glitch I can’t fixed. I have 99.99% sine the game and I check all level and the planets and I’m done all of it. It says in one with the rage level I need to find one more golden brick but I’ve collected all of them in that level. Please respond
Fun fact; there have been more Lego games this year than Mario games. And all were below the traditional Lego standard for me (like releasing Lego The Hobbit before the third film comes out and then releasing the final films as DLC? Cmon WB, Lego The Lego Movie came out just after it, could you not have waited a little longer till December or heck even January or February to release it?). As a longtime Lego fan since Lego Star Wars, this makes me dislike the WB takeover of TT even more than before.
Be happy it's not Disney taking over TT.
aero roger True, I like Disney's films but recently they've been making some poor decisions, at least when it comes to Star Wars. Cancelling 1313 and Clone Wars and then saying the extended law isn't canon. Thats just a slap in the face to fans. Hopefully Episode 7 (which again is stupid that its not called Episode 7 at all) will be good. Heck I even liked the prequels so to me if I don't like 7 they've ruined Star Wars for me, even though many fans hated Episodes 1 - 3.
True that man, im a LEGO fan since Star Wars, but lately the games have been underwhelming to say the least, they need to stop rushing them out and give us another fantastic game like Marvel or Batman 2
MichaelTheKing Yeah Lego Batman 2 and Marvel were great. I also liked LOTR alot. The main problem with Lego the hobbit is that a third of the game isn't out till next month.

I have to agree with this review. I always enjoyed the free roam in the recent lego games. And when I heard they were taking it out I actually reconsidered getting this game. I'm glad I didn't buy this. I expected way more.
i found this to be a fun game and would recommend it to fans of the DC universe.
how ever it isn't perfect,so i'll mention some issues i came across.
can get stuck in gaps from jumping and flying.
worst was when getting the spacesuit for batman.i switched to robin and he was still inside the machine.
could not do anything had to reset.
the VR story stage where you need to get to brainiac. on the second part (there are 3) there are several blocks on one of the sides of the current challenge. and if you fall down on them...there is no way to get out. since you cannot jump high enough to escape back to the main area...need to reset game.
i had 1 random crash, runs fine usually.

If you want to get technical, we've already had Lego Marvel, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones games, all of which fall under Disney. A game starring more Disney-esque characters doesn't seem out of the question.

They swapped out the open world from Lego Batman 2 in favor of the new gameplay mechanics, It honestly did disappoint me how the only full scale Lantern world was Oa I was even more disappointed after learning that Oa was the only planet where vehicles could be used but with these minor letdowns I must say that I still did enjoy the game, the ability of being able to equip the different suits without having to go to the equip points like in Lego Batman 2 was something I always wanted since the first game, also I loved how they added much more characters like Zoom/Reverse Flash. The game's not bad but 7.8 because of the cameos are kinda a BS reason.

I'd admit that coming from Lego Marvel Superheroes, this game is a tad bit restricting you but in the small scale is densely packed content. Maybe it's because Lego games are my guilty pleasure, but I enjoyed this game immensely. We all have our own reviews, thoughts and opinions, I'm just saying mine. I enjoyed the story and what happens in it. True, it did become a bit hard to follow but I got back on track. *SPOILERS...maybe* The idea of all the Lantern emotions projecting onto villains and heroes was funny and seeing each character behave in their ways made me LOL for reals. Having to go to each Lantern planet was fun and after the story being able to go to them again in a bigger scope was great. I understand what he was saying about the inconsistent tone to it, but for pete's sake, it's a Lego game. It took itself seriously when it needed to, and it does have weird side quests to say, like Kevin Smith and Bat-cow, but they were side quests that were funny. The character roster is great with everyone you can think of, even freakin' Polka Dot Man for christ's sake! This turned out to be a long comment, so all in all, yes, this game is not as good as Lego Marvel or Lego Batman 2, but it comes damn close for me.

So disappointing. The open world was a HUGE step down and none of the story took place in gotham. Besides the opening title scene, it didn't feel like a batman game at all. I hope they make a Justice League game after the new movies

lego batman 3s only complaint is that the hub should have been bigger. like..... give us some cities to fly around in! or how about a city thats a combination of gotham, west city, coast city, and metropolis that could be brainiacs way of fusing cities together for convenience?
