  • Miss South Africa finalist Chidimma Adetshina has been facing a lot of xenophobic comments about her, and many wanting her to not participate in the competition.
    Pretoria Girls High School may be suspended some white pupils due to alleged racist comments said on a WhatsApp group.

      I agree with you. This reminds me of the controversy surrounding the first Miss Japan, who was not fully Japanese. She was half black and got heaps of abuse and negative reactions from Japanese people. From a Japanese perspective this woman does not represent what a Japanese woman looks like. To most Japanese she looked fully black, despite having one Japanese parent. Now, this case is actually worse, because the contestant in question has no ties to South African ethnic groups. So, she should not be representing SA.

    Nigerians are very particular themselves about 'who' is Nigerian. If a South African/Ghanaian child born and raised in Lagos were to enter Miss Nigeria, they wouldn't entertain it for a minute. They didn't want to accept a half-Nigerian girl in their own contest - someone with actual Nigerian blood. By the way, the FBI has a division that deals only with Nigerian criminality. The notion that SA is particularly xenophobic is gaslighting, Nigerians are known for their behaviour inside and outside Nigeria. Also, we shouldn't allow ourselves to be gaslighted for enforcing our laws. They also enforce their own laws without fear or favour. If you overstay your visa in Zimbabwe, you will be deported. It's gaslighting to call SA xenophobic, worse coming from people in countries where they don't even respect or recognise their own fellow citizens of different ethnicities. As SAns we need to restore order and those coming from outside must respect our country and its laws. Also, why come in the numbers to a country you believe to be xenophobic. Stay home. Great analysis, refreshing to hear someone not just regurgitating popular sentiment.

      You are a typical middle class South African living abroad. You entered a foreign country legally, and followed a rule of law. The problem we have in South Africa is that many of the Africans from other countries come here illegally. Once here they engage in in criminal activity, such as drug dealing, human trafficking, identity theft etc.. Nigerians are the worst offenders. Also, Africans perpetuate the narrative that we black South Africans are all lazy, and wait around for handouts. Truth is.. we are just not geared to survival peddling of trivial goods on the street the way Africans are. In SA, we have more of an industrial/ western type economy, whereby most people are geared to working for companies and corporations. The other Africans think we just don't like to work period. Which is part of the disconnect between us.

    Citizenship law falls under 2 categories: Jus Soli/Rule of Land and Jus Sanguinis/Rule of Blood. A country like the USA has Jus Soli, meaning that if you are born there you are a citizen. The majority of the world applies Jus Sanguinis, meaning that you are the nationality of your parents. If you are born in China of SA parentage, you are South African not Chinese, nor do you automatically qualify for Chinese citizenship. It comes with conditions that have to be met.
    In Africa, only 4 or possibly 5 countries apply Jus Soli: Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Chad, and possibly Lesotho. If you are born of foreign parentage in those countries, you are considered a citizen. The rest of Africa, including Nigeria, apply Jus Sanguinis, meaning you do not automatically qualify for citizenship.
    In the Jus Sanguinis nations, when a child is born, you receive a Certificate of Notice. The foreign parent takes that document to their embassy or they travel back home, and then apply for the relevant citizenship documents from their countries. It is not the duty of a particular country to issue national documents of another country. The SA parent Notice of Birth certificate has an SA ID number, issued at birth for the child to claim at age 16.
    I'm saying all this to explain that if Chiddimma has SA citizenship, she must have gotten through a parent who was naturalised in SA. Most likely her mother would have obtain SA citizenship through a process of naturalisation. She wouldn't have gained the citizenship merely by birth in SA.

    There is a larger issue here that everyone seems to be ignoring and South Africans are not really saying, maybe because they just don't know how to. Personally, as a South African, I don't have any issues with the half Nigerian lady representing South Africa, especially if she loves the country and she is a legal citizen. That is my personal view. At the same time, I think it is disingenuous to paint South Africans as xenophobic. South Africa is full of immigrants from all across the African continent. Some of them have been in the country for many years and have become quite successful, often at the expense of South Africans. The question is if South Africans are so xenophobic, why would all of these foreign nationals even be in the country in the first place? The larger issue that everyone seems to be ignoring is the rivalry between South Africa and Nigeria. That definitely is the biggest factor, and it seems to be quite bitter. It also goes much deeper than I actually realized. I don't think that Chidimma would have been responded to that way if one of her parents were from any other African nation instead of Nigeria. It's not that South Africans are necessarily xenophobic, as much as it is the fact that the rivalry between the 2 countries is deep. Consider how Nigerians responded toward Tyla when she won the Grammy award. All over the internet she was called all kinds of derogatory names while her Africaness was denied. Some even said that the whole of Africa should boycott the Grammies for giving the award to Tyla instead of to a Nigerian. Consider the continued hate they spew out toward Tyla every time she makes a move. Read the hateful comments from Nigerians every time she just randomly posts something on her social media accounts. These things create resentment in the hearts of South Africans who love Tyla so much that they would gladly go to war over her. Hardly a day ever goes by when Nigerians are not declaring their country as the "giant of Africa." South Africans don't actually care about being known as the giant of Africa. Because of this rivalry the attitude of South Africans only seems to be that Nigeria can have that title as long as they stay with it over there in West Africa, as far away from them as possible. Consider how South Africans would feel if Chidimma wins and becomes miss SA today, and Nigerians claim her tomorrow and use the fact that her father is Nigerian as some kind of a flex against South Africans. Would that not make an already bitter rivalry much worse?

      There's no rivalry between South Africa and Nigeria. It's simply a hate exchange. South Africans hate Nigerians because a lot of them in SA have taken to a life of crime. Nigerians on the other hand hate South Africans because whenever the opportunity rears it's head, they attack and kill Nigerians.
      Also, you say South Africans aren't xenophobic and then go on to contradict that very statement by saying that your country men have a problem with the girl because of her Nigerian side of the family. Is that not xenophobia?

    My question is: Is it fair to subject this lady to all this scrutiny because of our hatred for bad Nigerians? What has she done to deserve this?
    Should we then start questioning the nationality of people who we think come from countries we dislike?

    In our present times, what makes some white people racist? Is it the names they call black people behind closed doors or sometimes out in the open? Is it their exclusion of black people in favor of their own? Is it any violent or ill- treatment toward black people? When you interrogate the behavior of some black South Africans towards other black Africans, you’ll often find these similar traits - Just thinking out load...🤷🏾‍♂. I agree though we need mutual respect for one another and at the very least a tolerance for each other.

      @pensonmlotshwa Hi, I don't think most people would be obliged to fight for any side really. For example, if you born in Portugal & you immigrate to SA and then SA has a war with Portugal. So you have dual citizenship, BUT you are permanent resident in SA. Portugal knows you don't live there so they not gonna bother asking you for anything. Dual citizenship is more like you don't lose your birthright citizenship, but you will only really be a full part of your birth country again IF you return there. Then you will again become a permanent resident of your birth country and you may resume certain obligations, including paying tax, or if you are young still you might want to join the military...(it is a bit complicated..🙂) I like your channel..🤎

    From my 4 years of experience living in South Africa as a black immigrant , there’s a lot of Xenophobia specifically Afrophobia and Classism. If you’re from a wealthy country e.g America and the UK, South Africans will be very welcoming whether you’re there legally/illegally(lots of them overstay their VISAs). But if you’re from a third world country and you’re Black, you will face an insane level of prejudice and you will feel it. You will be treated like you’re not even human by black 🇿🇦 most of the time 🤷‍♂️

    • @sunnymacksoverhere
      @sunnymacksoverhere 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Anyone overstaying their visa should be deported, regardless of nationality. That's how it works everywhere else, I'm sure even in your home country. Unfortunately many Africans leave their countries with the intention to overstay in foreign lands and when citizens have a problem with it, the same Africans cry foul. At some point, African people also need to live with accountability. You can't always point fingers at those who have a legitimate cause for concern and claim to protect their country. It's happening in the UK, US, all over Europe. You are well aware that in terms of numbers, there are more Africans flocking to SA than Europeans. Africans are competing with South Africans for limited resources, which is why the conflict happens. This will be the same in your country if the reverse happened. We have seen it with Ghana and Nigeria, as an example. Accountability is key here and many Africans don't want to be held accountable and feel entitled to do as they please - something they will not do in their own countries by the way.

    I agree with most of what you said but IMO there is nothing wrong with dual citizenship, it cant be held against someone that they have parents from different countries. It is just their privilege that they born with just like some pple are born rich and some are born poor, some are born tall and some short. We dont take riches from those that are born rich so similarly, we cant take away dual nationality from those born with it, its theirs, they are born that way. Your child has heritage of both parents whether we like it or not. So on dual nationality, it is what it is. Even if the 2 countries go to war, it doesnt change the fact that child has dual nationality. If you and your wife fight fight, child remains a child of both parents and doesnt become child of 1 parent so your point of being loyal to one country, i dont quite agree with that.

    Respect this however growing up in SA as a Nigerian there were always negative stereotypes thrown my way. I must say I completely understand there are Nigerians doing all sorts of illegal sketchy shit. But there are Nigerians also contributing to society and just living their lives. • @daiTiedai271
      @daiTiedai271 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I hope you recognise that it's not a South African thing, but a global stereotype. When I travelled to NY a while back, all the Nigerians were asked to step aside and they were dealt with separately from everyone else. As Nigerians you need to have an internal conversation about how you represent yourselves to the world. Let the good Nigerians stand up. The world can't do that for you, and you can't keep blaming others for what are essentially Nigerian failures. As South Africans, we have our own failures but we are not afraid to address them or blame others for what we do wrong. Also, it's not a colonial mindset. There is proof worldwide of Nigerian wrongdoing, which creates the stereotypes about Nigerians. It can be backed up by arrests made, deportation figures, etc. around the world. SA did not create the stereotypes about Nigeria and Nigerians.

    So any foreigner who gives their baby in South Africa is a South African citizens. Complete legal nonsense. That means babies of asylun seekers, tourist, passport holders and Visa holders technically been born in south Africa assume full citizens. Its completely wrong. Only when both you parents are born or are legally South Africans that's when the baby can be given full citizens.

      True. I work at a health centre & the first thing Pakistani, Bangladeshi & Zim asylum seekers do is get pregnant, give birth to a citizen & then claim citizenship due to that. They come to see Drs so they get pregnant immediately. This girls are between 18- 21. Why are they so in a rush to get pregnant? For citizenship. They even get child grants. They exploit our laws.

    Bro Penson get your facts right bro don’t mislead people🤦🏽‍♂️. Being born in South African DOES NOT make you South African because our law does NOT Recognise birth-on-the-soil as automatic citizenship. We are NOT the USA. Get your facts right bro I thought you were informed ?

    Your views are interesting and they bring me to the the Tyler issue. Where u say dual citizenship status people must choose a side. When americans mentions thisbcause thwybhave chosen a aide, to be black and not to be called colored we were up in arms fighting. And coloreds were fighting saying they r mixed and dont identify as black yet she is representing black music. We didn't understand the black americans when they said this. Indeed we choose who to fight without logic somtimes. We even assumed americans bayasidelela and not even. Those guys thought they were supporting a proud black afrucan sister till she said she is colored and they lost it and accused her of benefitting from from black culture since she isn't one . even coloreds are known to use the dual thing just like this lady to their advantage. During apartheid they were happy to associate with their whiteness now they r calling themselves natives and original south Africans through their Khoisan lineage . i am a proud black African and i am tired of seeing our black afrucans fighting the wrong people. Nisile shem all whonr here hating on this girl. If u only had more knowledge ngabe kungcono

      You must know yourself that in SA there is these categories we must identify ourselves via diff forms we need to complete for employment etc. Black, white, Indian, coloured. Can you understand our confusion when now you want us to say black. Even in law we are being discriminated, then we not black.I for one refuse to live my life as a colour, I am African and proud of it. Peace to you.

      Misguided. African/Black is a race and Africa is a continent. Everyone inside Africa even before colonization had their heritage, region of economic interests and leadership. It's human nature.

    If you're not being affected by xenophobia, you're not in the right position to state whether SA is Xenophobic or not. Regardless of reasons you might possess. It's like a white man saying they're not racist... But are they not racist? Ask the black man

    Penson I suggest you find the clip where Chidimma's dad telephonically tries to explain this - he made it worse, so worse I cant believe why we are still debating about Chidimma's citizenship. Hint, the dad came to South Africa for the first time in 2010 to watch the world cup and he had to go back to the uk bcos his visiting visa was about to expire - 2010 is only 14 years behind, Chidimma is 23yrs old, do the math brother. I be waiting.

    People forgot Miss SA belong to the same category of respect and key importance as overseas ambassadors, national teams and diplomats. Today is Miss SA, tomorrow is the Presidency. We are selling and giving out citizenship to strangers who doesn't respect and like South Africans. My idea is that if both you parents are not South Africans then you cannot be given citizenship on birth. People marry for citizenship and make babies are made to circumvent the immigration and citizens laws. And also I think this issue is been put on the headline to shift attention on illegal military camp training foreigners from Libya which is more serious than Miss SA. Nonetheless our country is been disrespect by all our politicians including the EFF, DA and ANC. They really don't care about South Africans apart from getting votes from them.

    About the skin tone, it's about being human, since it's not easy to go around people asking where are you from your skin tone speaks for you. Apart from being colorists, we judge by skin tone as to wjether to speak English or not and sometimes we just don't want to speak English and We make a judgement by your skin tone uf you local or South African.

    ... furthermore , with specific reference to the Miss South Africa issue, we must note that there is a difference between citizenship and permanent residence, in terms of benefits. There are processes to be gone through for one to move from one state to the other, for example; from being accidentally or deliberately born by a Somalian father and a South African mother does not automatically assign the child as a South African. From temporary residency to permanent residency, to naturalisation ,to citizenship etc; there is a thorough process to go through. It's not automatic. Let us stop using this term,"xenophobia" as a scareword to point where we have now become a lawless country because we are paralysed and afraid of being assertive in the protection of our country's interests.😂

    Do you mean everyone from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania , Nigeria (Black Africa basically) is descrimminated against based on the colour of their skins, therefore seen as criminal. However, everyone from Europe/Asia comes with potentials, good to go? You guys can do whatever you like, but remember Africa is watching.
