While you did mention the brutal insurance rates here in Ontario I would suggest to anyone thinking of getting a bike in Ontario DO NOT buy a bike until after you have gotten multiple insurance quotes. There's usually one guy every year posting on the local bike forum that buys the bike first then get's sticker shock when he get's insurance quotes.
Thanks for creating content about riding in Ontario. I live in Toronto and am going to start riding next year for commuting and touring purposes. Your videos are very informative and helpful as there are not a lot of videos about riding in Ontario, the laws, or riding in cities in general.
I hope you don't live in Toronto, downtown Toronto! 🙂Traffic in Toronto is just horrible. In summer heat, you'd be forced to do lane filtering! Happy riding!
Hey man I'm 22 and about to finish college, been looking into getting a bike as a lil graduation gift for myself. I was a bit worried about the licensing process in Ontario but this video just simplified it all for me. This was a great video, we want more motorcycle content, especially with the spring just around the corner!
Thanks, it was a very useful video, it will be great if you speak anything about the specific cost of the insurance and anything about motorcycles and winter.
Thanks man! Insurance is hard to talk about because it’s such a big difference in price for everyone. Insurance rate depends on your driving history, any tickets you have, how long you’ve had a license, your age, the area you live in (can be double the price in some areas like Brampton), and the size of engine you have on your machine, and a few other things as well. So very hard to say what insurance will be. Mine is $80 but I have friends that pay $300-$400 per month. Winter is too cold to ride, your tires don’t grip the road and slide a lot and when snow falls it’s nearly impossible to ride. We store our motorcycles in Canada and don’t ride them from November till about April.
Useful information. I will go to Canada the next month and I have been thinking about the motorcycle license on Canada, now I have an idea. Thanks a lot. I will go to Hamilton btw!
Get your m1. Go take a motorcycle safety course and pass the test (dont have to wait the 60 days to take it this way but still have to wait the 60 days to upgrade to the m2) then get insurance once you can upgrade to the m2 This is what I am planning on doing this summer. I'll have my m2 and be able to get slightly cheaper insure. I'll have the safety course, I'll be 25, and I'll have the m2 so my insurance should he decent and not crippling
I’m also in Ontario I recently got my first bike and yea insurance can be brutal in Ontario considering I’m a younger rider but I was able to get a good rate shop around different companies will give different rates 👍
Thanks for the info, unfortunately I had no idea I have to wait 60 days for my m2 even If I take the msf course, I got my m1 last week and I'm gonna do msf in 25 days :(
Moving to Canadá Ontário soon. Im from Portugal. Have my license gere but Will have to do all over again... But Nice videos. Followed and gonna keep coming here!!!
Hello Smokin Monkey, These are really useful info. I would like to request a separate video for motorcycle insurance as many don’t have any idea how the motorcycle insurance works and how to negotiate on what parameters. Thank you.
Thanks! To be honest I can make a video but it won’t be very helpful because you can’t negotiate the price with insurance companies in Canada. You only get a lower price the longer you have your licence, the older you are, the classification of you licence (m1, m2, m), and if you have any tickets or accidents. I think we have the highest price insurance in the world in Canada so it’s a pain in the ass.
Man when you started talking a little about insurance, it felt like I had been kicked in the guts. I'm soon to be 52 and never got a driver's license ( never really had the cash for a car ) and not knowing if I would like or be able to handle a motorcycle I decided to get what you see as my profile pic, it's an Ebike lol ( based on the Ninja 300, and yes I'm 52 and still a BIG Resident Evil fan so got some decals of the Umbrella Corporation and went a bit nutz lol ). but since it does not require a license or insurance to operate over here, I thought it would be a good way to start, just after a few weeks I regretted so much buying this crap and not going for a real one ( I say crap because of low travel range and high price for what it is ) but now if I save for a couple of years I might be able to get a real bike, but I'm not sure I would be able to afford the insurance ( I did a few quick checks and it looks like I could be in the $3k+/year and that is way out of my budget ) considering our winters ( I'm in Ottawa ) it's stupid crazy the $$$ they want for a vehicle that ends-up parked for almost 1/2 the year. Great vid and super informative, and to help a fellow Canadian = +1 Sub. Thanks and ride safe!
Try getting quotes on different bikes. I was quoted 5k a year for a CBR60RR and 1800 a year for my SV650 I currently ride lol it’s nuts how much of a difference there is. Every year you have a bike insured and have a license the rates lower. I think I pay $83 a month now on the SV after owning it for 4 years. Crazy but that’s why I don’t have a super sport like a ninja600, R6, gsxr600 or CBR600RR but bikes like the ninja650, cbr650f and gsxr650f are all less than half of their super sport counterparts.
Informative video. I’m at 40’s with just m1, hard to find multiple insurance in Ontario that willing to insure m1 , but found one with $165. Nice to have the course for additional safety, but all courses are full during all summer within 300km around me. Not sure if I accept the quote and go ahead and buy a bike and book for m2 test ?
Well, of course you have to think about it. Would anybody insure a driver in a car with a G1? it’s the exact same thing lol. As for taking the course, I would definitely wait to take the course; if you go to take the test by yourself they’re gonna tell you ‘ride from here to there’s and they don’t tell you that they’re looking for you to shift from first gear to second gear back to neutral and then put your foot down and stop safely. They just tell you ‘ride from here to there’. So you can end up taking the test with the ministry and failing for stupid reasons and having to do it all over again.
great video!, i do however have a question. what are the best (affordable companies that will insure motorcycles the reason for this my current company doesn't insure bikes) any kinda info would help
@SmokinMonkeyOG thank you for the reply, I recall you saying similar in the video but from what I can tell the M2 isn't gotten through my local course - I would do the course and then have some period of time not operating a motorcycle then have to do the test. Do you not need insurance to do the course?
@peanutbutter7721 the courses for people with an M1 that want to get an M2 you do the two day course and at the end of it they give you a package that you take to the ministry and they upgrade you to an M2 if you pass the test at the end of the course. I think you have to wait 30 days from getting your M1 till you can hand in the package to get your M2 but that’s the only waiting in Ontario
I'm 19, I will be buying a bike soon. I don't have my M1 or M2 it's October so I will be stashing the bike away in a garage I'm just wondering if I can register the bike I'm buying very soon under my name then do my M1 in spring and M2. Is that possible or okay ?
@@SmokinMonkeyOG I've done lots of research apparently it's allowed but it's just transferring ownership to my name. The bike won't be given any plates. I read this on a reddit form.
I don’t have any experience with that or know anyone that does but I’m sure you will spend a lot less on fuel and possibly insurance so you will make a bit more in your pocket but during winter or bad weather it will be hard lol
Pretty sure you would have to be on private property with your own bike or someone you know with their bike. But no place will rent a bike for day use or anything without a license as far as I know. Even race tracks you need a license I believe.
Thanks for ur information, I like to ride a motorcycle, don't have any experience never ride before, is there any way to learn how to drive and familiar with in private till get a little more ability of dŕiving, and later on going for step by step officially licensed . Thanks, Asad

Call around get quotes and see what you can afford. I would get quotes on different bikes before you buy one to know what you can afford. I would recommend doing your m2 before getting a bike because insurance will be very expensive
@adam743r no clue it’s different for everybody depending on how long you’ve been riding the level of license you have the size of bike you have all kinds of different things come in to play

When I do the course to get my M2 what do I need to bring with me?
Usually you need everything but a motorcycle. Helmet, gloves, riding boots, riding jacket etc
Surron or Stealth Bomber it is!
I don't really understand how you're supposed to practice for an M2 if you don't have a bike (and can't get insurance)
You take the course and do your m2 through them then get a bike

Yes look up motorcycle training course and you’ll be able to learn on a motorcycle before you have a licence and they will help you pass your test
Which riding school did you go?thanks
I used RTI
Can someone tell me what to expect on the written M1 test? I know its a multiple choice, but how do i prepare? Thanks.
Type in M1 practice test online into google and you can do the test yourself before you go
Ya the m1 is basically a G1 with 20 motorcycle related questions stapled to it lol
Will i need insurance if i do the course fro M1 to M2 before i buy a bike?
The course provides a bike for you and you don’t need your own insurance to take the course
