You can say it's an action-adventure, a romance, a comedy, and all are true. It's the perfect family movie. The pacing is quick, the dialogue is witty and engaging, and the setting and costuming are vibrant without looking cheap OR overdone. Its definitely in my top 3 favorites. If someone tells me they hate The Princess Bride, that's a good litmus test to cut them out, no one needs that kind of negativity.
I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, so here's a fun fact from the imdb page: "Mandy Patinkin revealed that acting out Inigo's quest to avenge his father's murder brought back memories of losing his own father to cancer in 1972. He said that when filming the scene when Inigo kills "The Six-Fingered Man," he felt like he had just "killed" the cancer that killed his father." Takes an already amazing scene and makes it even more powerful.
"It's giving me Mel Brooks." YES. That makes PERFECT sense because it was directed by Rob Reiner, who is Carl Reiner's son. Carl Reiner (Ocean's 11 flicks are the most recent if I recall) was Mel Brooks's best friend in the world AND collaborator for decades.
Andre was in the ring against all the old greats. Hulk Hogan, Gorilla Monsoon, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Killer Kowalski, The Iron Sheik, Macho Man, everybody and he was pretty much universally loved by them all.
Cary Elwes wrote a book about filming The Princess Bride and it’s wonderful! Great stories about Andre the Giant, learning to fence for that fabulous scene - then doing it with a broken toe, etc. Elwes narrated the audiobook too, along with some of the cast. Definitely worth a read - or listen. And one of the things he talks about is how the studio didn’t know how to market the movie, and it didn’t do well at the box office. The coming of VHS tapes and Blockbuster lead thousands of people (like me) to discover the movie… and it became a classic. I’ve seen it more than 20 times… closer to 40+ and can recite the dialog along with the film, like many who have been watching it since the 1980s. Edited to add: The movie is based on an actual book - The Princess Bride, by William Goldman, who also wrote the screenplay for the movie.
I absolutely love watching people react to watching this movie for the first time because every time they do they seem to love it and this is one of my all time favorite movies.
Robin Wright might be most famous from Forrest Gump (and this). Cary Elwes has been in a ton of stuff, including Glory, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Hot Shots, and Stranger Things. Christopher Guest (the six-fingered man) has done a lot, too, including This is Spinal Tap ("It goes to 11"), Waiting for Guffman, and A Few Good Men. He's married to Jamie Lee Curtis. Wallace Shawn ("inconceivable") has been around for decades. He was perfect in Young Sheldon.
I’ve seen this move at least 50 times. Just introduced my 8 year old daughter to it. It’s been on repeat all week she LOVES it. This movie is in a category all of its own
Inigo, not Uhnigo The i is pronounced like "in" As you wish means "i love you" So the grandpa was saying he would come back to read the book because he loves his grandson.
Not all movies fall easily into one category. I grew up watching this classic gem, one of my favorites. Yes, it does hold up. It doesn't need extra special effects to be funny and enjoyable. So glad you took the time to react. 💜
This was such a big part of my childhood ❤ Andre the Giant lived the last part of his life on a ranch 20 minutes from my house, so he was quite the legend #RIP
The point of the story is to be over dramatized to the point of being funny... Like imagine the best fantasy book you ever read, but sometimes when you explain it to someone it sounds ridiculous... So that's kind of what they are going for with the over dramatized fantasy names like Princess Buttercup and the story being all over the place because it adds all the elements of fantasy together in one story... It's just a fun movie! Light hearted and definitely doesn't take itself seriously... except for the love part. That part is very serious and true. haha
Starting with old western tropes from the 1800's with masked heroes on horseback like John R Hughes, or Bass reeves, then Zorro, Batman, Green Hornet, a few pirates, and a wide variety of other mysterious heroes in masks... this is a film trope that is likely VERY much older than Zorro. In fact we can go back to samurai tales, musketeers, and other fictional heroes throughout history who wore disguises while fighting tyrannical injustices. Putting Westley in a similar guise in this film is a nod to all of us who grew up with these tropes... especially with the thousands of episodic Lone Ranger tales!
It’s one of my favorites, and it’s holding up well over the years. The only line that hasn’t aged well is when Westley is pretending to be the most violent pirate in the world and in that persona he threatens to hit Buttercup. It’s hard to bear in mind that he was only faking, and some people get really thrown by it.
Since you even mentioned Mel Brooks at the end, definitely watch Robin Hood Men in tights! Its hilarious, and actually stars the same guy as the Princess Bride!
I gasped out loud with excitement when I got the notification of this vid! I LOVE this movie it’s such an amazingly amazing movie! I love period time movies and tv shows like the 17th, 18th, 19th etc. century types or anything w/ castles. I remember the time I saw this it was at one of my bffs birthday sleepover party in elementary and we all watched it right before going to bed. That was a mistake bc I had so many nightmares of that rat boar animal thing from the woods/swamp scene. had nightmares of that thing for months after that. It's such a great movie though. I think you'd like Disney's Swiss Family Robison (1960) movie. Love your videos! you do an amazing job!
Not a kids’ movie-a cult classic. You’ll find people who love it as much as you do, and it’s an immediate connection. You’ll find yourself quoting the lines at appropriate times.
And he had one condition that the hat that Rob Reindeer wore in Spinal Tap appeared in the movie and you can see it hanging on the wall of the grandson's room. I saw this as a preview in the theater and they gave the audience copies of the theme song on 45 records
No Bubbles maybe… but plenty of Mojo-Jojo. Entertaining as always. Thanks for the laughs. “ Goodbye, boys. Have fun storming the castle.” -Miracle Max (Billy Crystal)
Fun fact: Mandy Patinkin who plays Inigo really did lose his father in real life to cancer (of course, he's perfect for the role because of the meaning it had to him) and in a few interviews, he says that he imagined the Six-Fingered Man was the cancer that killed his dad
I have seen Andre wrestle several times in person. Also, this is one of my favorite movies. I've probably seen it at least 30 times, not counting reaction videos.
Cary Elwes (Wesley) wrote a really good book called As You Wish that has a lot of good behind the scenes info from the movie. If you are a fan of the movie it is worth a read.
"Buddy ol' pal looks really familiar!" If you're talking about the kid... he was the main actor in "The Wonder Years". Older him was in the 3rd Austin Powers movie as the agent with the mole. If you're talking about the grandfather, he's probably best known as the detective Columbo.
Christopher Guest, the actor who plays the six-fingered villain is a baron in real life, and Jamie Lee Curtis's husband. He is also well-known as a writer and director. Chris Sarandon, who plays the prince, was the vampire in the original _Fright Night._ He's also Susan Sarandon's ex.
This movie is a classic. I even quoted “mawwage is wat bwings us togeva today” at my brother’s wedding 😆 My favourite line is “I’m not a witch, I’m your wife!”
Some of your favorite scenes are even better in the book. There’s only such a short time in a film, so a lot got cut, but the author of the book also authored the screenplay, and it’s an amazing film. The parts that are particularly great in the book are: Much more backstory on Inigo and Fezzik Much more elaborate Pit of Despair The Machine is way scarier Much longer Miracle Max scene Much better snow sand scene Inigo surviving Count Rugen’s attack Completely different side story (not the sick boy / grandpa story) It’s a very readable book for adults and teens and is extremely funny.
How many times did I see the movie? Guessing here - 60 or 65 maybe... Music by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits - take a listen to Brothers in Arms. Director Rob Reiner also directed the American President - another awesome movie. Back in college, we'd get 15 or 20 people crammed into someone's dorm room and watch this movie - couldn't hear most of it because everyone was reciting the lines in chorus, but it was a riot! As to what category the movie is. I would honestly answer "Yes".
The scene they're doing on the mountain, they're actually crawling on their knees, and then the image is turned to make it look like they're climbing. That is your movie design factoid for today. Love your reaction!
This is one of my husbands and my favorites, so our first dance at our wedding was the theme from the princess bride and our cake topper says "As You Wish."
Princess Bride is definitely top ten all time. Grew up watching it. Loooved Andre. Others in the top ten: Tombstone Pan's Labyrinth Moulin Rouge The Dark Crystal LOTR & Hobbit trilogies The Good Son (CRIMINALLY underrated) How To Train Your Dragon Meet Me in St. Louis (also criminally underrated. This is the first movie Judy Garland said she actually felt beautiful and helped kickstart her romance with the director, Vincente Minnelli, who eventually became Liza Minnelli's father.)
Yes one of my favorites of all time, seen it probably over 100 times easily. My sons love it too, definitely family friendly. It’s all Rom Com Fantasy!! That’s what makes this film so special. Hope you enjoyed it
I think this is the first time in a long time I saw a suggested video pop up and my immediate thought is “I love this guy!” Yet this is one of my favorite movies. 🤣🤣 I think it says a lot about how great your videos are to me. This is gonna be fun. Thanks for what you do. May your views and likes always be equal.
Billy Crystal played Mike Wizowski in “Monsters Inc.” I think that’s what you’d know him from. He’s far more iconic than that, but everyone knows Monsters Inc, right? This movie is one of the greatest of all time. ❤
"I wanna reason to put some of this stuff on"...all you have to do is go to a Renaissance Faire. Everyone is dressed like this and you can get more stuff like this there.
imagine sinking into quicksand like that except your foot lands on top of what feels like a person's head and then it starts moving and a hand grabs at your ankle..instant heart attack..
Watching your reaction made me feel old, and I was born in 1990! My aunt introduced me to it as a kid and I don’t think I’ve ever met someone in my age range who hadn’t seen it. It’s one of my comfort movies that I can watch over and over again. ❤️
If you like this, you'd also like "This is Spinal Tap," by the same director, Rob Reiner. Fun fact: Rob Reiner's dad, Carl Reiner, was bffs with Mel Brooks for over 60 years. So it's no surprise that there's a lot of Mel Brooks influence in this movie.
Fun fact: it was Cary Elwes’s performance in this that inspired Mel Brooks to cast him as Robin Hood in Robin Hood Men In Tights. He said Cary looked just like a classic swashbuckler from old Hollywood, which worked well as one of the best Robins of all time was Errol Flynn. Cary played his version almost exactly the same as Errol and even looks like him. One of the best actors who never got a real shot
It's not a coincidence that this reminds you of a Mel Brooks movie. The director is Rob Reiner. Rob's father, Carl Reiner worked with Mel Brooks as comedy writers for Cid Caesar's Show of Shows (a sketch comedy show in the early days of TV). So, in terms of comedic style, this is a descendent. Regarding the "as you wish" at the end, that is a call back to "as you wish" meaning "I love you".
I'm not sure where you're located, but look up SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). It's similar to the Renaissance Fair but a little more in depth.
Cary Elwes, who plays Wesley, was in a Mel Brooks movie, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, where he gets to sword fight some more. Christopher Guest, who played the six-fingered man, was actually kind of afraid of how intense Mandy Patinkin, Inigo Montoya, was during that final sword fight.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. The 2 actors playing Inigo and Wesley practiced dueling with a fencing master for weeks and even continued on set between takes. That is pretty much the best actual realistic fencing in any movie. Wesley was mad because he thought Buttercup had immediately moved on instead of waiting fir him. Love this movie. I have it on dvd.
I read the book years before the movie got made. And when it did, I was there for it. It's about perfect: funny, romantic, fantasy, with characters who are real enough to care about and enjoy. Mel Brooks is more about the jokes and the sense of outrageous; this is more about pure charm. And has there ever been a better sword fight captured on film? That would be inconceivable.
"This probably got an incredible amount of awards", you say. Well, it did win the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Festival where it premiered. But at the U.S. box office it didn't do very well, and during Oscars/etc. time it was fairly under the radar. The real victory was in VHS sales, and later DVD sales.
IN-YEE-GO. Arnold Schwarznegger was in the running to play Fezzik when the film was first getting set up. But it took a very long time to come to production, and by that time Arnold had become too big a star. Despite his really wanting the role, they could no longer afford him, so they went with Andre, who had been their first choice but had turned it down because he was shy about his voice. (He was the one who suggested Arnold.)
One of my favorite stories from this movie is during the fire swamp scene, William Goldman, who wrote the book and the screenplay, was on set. When Buttercup's dress gets set on fire, William completely forgot it was part of the script and yelled "Her dress is on fire!!", ruining the take. 😂
It was considered a family movie at the time. I have easily seen this movie more than 100 times in my life ( Turning 50 this year). I have all of the dialogue memorized. My sister and our friends all quoted this movie for years after it first came out. Loved it then love it still.
I’ve done medieval reenactment all my life. Look up the SCA, we have sword fighting, fencing, arts from that era, and once a year we have Pennsic war. You should look up videos of it, it’s a blast seeing 5k people battle at the same time
Yup, was coming here to say this. Most areas will have some sort of Renaissance or medieval fair once a year or so, and tons of people show up in full time-accurate costume. I dress up every year and go because there's just something so satisfying about seeing and wearing this type of clothes
Thanks, Brian! 🙏💕 That was a fun one 😂 The first time I saw this movie I think I was in junior high (I'm turning 40 next month) One of my teachers put it on for us to watch and my peers were confused that I hadn't seen it before 😅 Watched it lots of times after that. Maybe not as often as I watched some other movies, but enough to quote a lot of the scenes 🤣
This was the 1st book we read to our daughter when she was little. And the movie is just perfect! You should look into how hard it was to get this movie made. Very interesting.
I saw this when it was first in the theaters and the audience was genuinely surprised when Westley turned out to be the masked man. Nowadays everyone can figure it out before the reveal, but movie tropes were different back then. I thought they were going to reveal some evil twin or doppleganger.
"When Wesley said 'As you wish', what he REALLY meant was 'I Love You'".
Grandpa at the end: "As You Wish"
Did it before "I can fix that".
i love that so much
"What category is this damn movie?" Perfection. Never before or since has there been a more perfect movie.
The main reason this movie was not popular in theatres is because they didn't know how to market it.
You can say it's an action-adventure, a romance, a comedy, and all are true. It's the perfect family movie. The pacing is quick, the dialogue is witty and engaging, and the setting and costuming are vibrant without looking cheap OR overdone. Its definitely in my top 3 favorites. Yes.

“Is this a comedy?” - 99% if the original theater audience.
I'm not sure where you're located, but look up SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). It's similar to the Renaissance Fair but a little more in depth.
It's a movie for all ages. I first saw it when I was a kid. I still have the movie and watch it.
The kid you thought looked familiar is best known for being main character in The Wonder Years show
Cary Elwes, who plays Wesley, was in a Mel Brooks movie, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, where he gets to sword fight some more.
This is one of the most perfect movies ever made. It's beautiful, funny, and energetic.
This is my absolute favorite movie. My husband, knowing this, had "as you wish" engraved on the inside of my ring 😊
Yo... Prince Humperdinck sang Jacks songs in Nightmare before Christmas
He's just straight up Jack Skellington throughout the whole movie, both speaking and singing parts I believe.
Back then children were allowed to watch all movies, no age restrictions... adults may have seen this as a kids movie
My man Roberts understood brand recognition before the rest of us 😂
Saw this at least 50 or more times, this is an amazing movie. Grew up watching it. I think you should watch the Making Of and then rewatch this again!
This movie is one of my favs. It is also one of the most quoted movies out there. There is no real category for it tho. It's kinda in it's own league.
Pronounced Inny-Go, like a mobile game for bellybuttons
Indigo. Like the color in the rainbow. (Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet)
One of my favorite stories from this movie is during the fire swamp scene, William Goldman, who wrote the book and the screenplay, was on set. When Buttercup's dress gets set on fire, William completely forgot it was part of the script and yelled "Her dress is on fire!!", ruining the take. 😂
This movie is a beloved classic. Definitely in my top 10
I was born in 99 this is one of my favorite movies of all time I've seen it minimum 60 times
Another film directed by Rob Reiner and featuring Billy Crystal is _When Harry Met Sally._
It was considered a family movie at the time. I have easily seen this movie more than 100 times in my life ( Turning 50 this year). I have all of the dialogue memorized. My sister and our friends all quoted this movie for years after it first came out. Loved it then love it still.
Absolutely LOVE this movie. I am a mother of 4 and this is one of my kids' favourite movies. Yes, a family movie.
Mawwidge! Mawwidge is what bwings us togevver today!
LOL Too many quotable lines...just too many! 😜
On our wedding video the priest did a voice over of the perect kuss line and our whole wedding party did an "as you wish" to send us off.
16:33 The Renaissance Festival is fun.
@@j0hn00 It's such a different qnd goid vibe. You feel like a whole another person.
This was the first movie I analysed in year 7 English. Could not tell you what I wrote about but it’s such an iconic movie
Thanks, Brian! 🙏💕 That was a fun one 😂
The first time I saw this movie I think I was in junior high (I'm turning 40 next month)
One of my teachers put it on for us to watch and my peers were confused that I hadn't seen it before 😅
Watched it lots of times after that.
