  • Skipness Castle stands on the east side of the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland, near the village of Skipness. Together with the nearby Kilbrannan Chapel it is a scheduled ancient monumen.
Skipness Castle was begun in the early 1200s, probably by the MacSween family. It was acquired by the Stewart earls of Mentieth in 1262. It passed into the hands of the MacDonalds in 1325 and eventually on to the Campbell earls of Argyll. Scotland History
The main structure of the castle was built in the early 13th century by the Clan MacSween, with later fortifications and other additions made to the castle through the 13th, 14th and 16th centuries.
The castle was garrisoned with royal troops in 1494, during King James IV of Scotland's suppression of the Isles. Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll, granted Skipness to his younger son, Archibald Campbell, in 1511.
During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in 1646, the castle was besieged by forces under the command of Alasdair Mac Colla. During the siege, Alasdair's brother, Gilleasbuig Mac Colla, was killed in August 1646. The castle was abandoned in the 17th century.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO! Thank you so much for exploring every detail and stopping long enough to read the signs. I'm a Sweeney in America and seeing these castles that were built by my ancestors is absolutely awesome!!

It's extraudandry the amount of castles in Scotland.. Where I live there in Sutherland it seems there is 26! I've only found 10...Then there are the brochs which there must be 100 plus.. As a Dry Stone Waller and stone & stone mason they are of great interest.. Keep up you channel very interesting..
