    Nothing for my shoulder, but the penetration power with these awesome 1200gr arrows is just stunning.
    It was written 60#@34”, so I kept this as my max draw. We had an arrow weight of 18gpp.

    That demonstration illustrates some comments I made to previous videos on Manchu and Magyar bows. They're designed to work best with a much heavier arrow for their draw weight than other designs. The price one pays for that robust build and the long siyas to provide the leverage to throw that heavy arrow is a somewhat lower velocity than a comparable bow built to a different design (a Crimean Tatar style, for example).
    What this does is let you maximize the sectional density of your projectile, basically the mass that's stacked behind a given radius (in this case that of your arrow). High sectional density equals better energy retention in flight and deeper penetration through the target medium.
    What I find fascinating is the similarity between the Manchu and Magyar bows, despite next to no contact between the cultures that created them. It would appear that both the Quing and the Magyars needed missile weapons with very high penetration, possibly because both were typically facing opponents wearing substantial armor. Their other shared requirement would be that both cultures were cavalry-focused, so designed their bows around use from horseback. That limits you to a shorter bow and necessitates a complex recurve/decurve shape and composite construction to create a bow that a) can be used from horseback and b) can thow and arrow heavy enough to penetrate the armor worn by a typical opponent while doing that with enough velocity to be useful.
    The English shared one requirement...that of penetration. But they didn't care about shooting from horseback (for a number of reasons) so they accepted a much longer bow which gave the required leverage using a simpler shape and materials. The great length of the English bow allowed very high draw weights, and the arrows reflect that, being quite thick and made of Ash wood, which is very dense and rigid. That rigidity also helps give the arrows the spine to be useful when shot from a 160# longbow.
    The Japanese also needed arrows that would penetrate deeply, and initially focused on horse archery...but they took a different route. Either due to availability or some other reason their choice of material forced them to use a very long bow to get the necessary leverage. But they still needed to be able to use it from horseback, so they got it to work by making their design highly asymmetric.
    I'll stop geeking out now and let y'all poke big, ragged holes in my post.

      Late Imperial roman bows found all across Europe, show long eares pretty much matching the Manchu design but with slightly less forward ears so a string guide was not required despite the string pulling forwards.
      What few descriptions/artwork from Ancient Greek recurves also suggest they were long eared, which would also solve the issue on why Slingers could outrange Greek Archers, if they were using Long eared bows with heavy arrows, since tests show slingers would be outranged with more traditional recurves either composiate or horn, shooting lighter arrows.
      Also both the Greeks and the Late imperial Romans both had to deal with heavily armoured infantry.

      Not really a kids bow because 60 ibs is what early horseback cultures used. Mongols used 80+ ibs You dont need a super heavy bow unless your enemy is always in armour. The whole reason why there were 160 ib bows is because of armour. The Highlanders used 50-60 ib bows because they didn't need to strike a man in plate armour and that was enough. In the Saxon era in England 70 ibs was warbow weight

I have not tried yet how much pundage it needs to tire my back. And Id call myself pretty average regarding fitness. Sounds cool? It aint. My Fingers can not at all keep up. I have to stop shooting for weeks cause my fingers swell and become numb fast.
    Sideffect: I learned left and right handed traditional as well as thumb release to distribute between the fingers and give them time to heal...

    May I ask, I always hear about arrow weight on this channel, but are you interested in the spine also in asiatic archery?
    The arrows seem terribly mismatched to the bow.
    The question is sincere; long time subscriber and archer, but I have never had an asiatic bow in my hand.
    I thank for an answer to whomsoever on this channel in advance.

    • @ArminHirmer
      @ArminHirmer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      what makes you think that the arrows are. iss matched? With the wight you usually get a decent spine already and with asiatic bows it is always better if the arrow is stiffer Tham you can find in the traditional spine charts. And a 250gr tip is "weakening" the spine again

    • @AnimaTriste
      @AnimaTriste ปีที่แล้ว

      @ArminHirmer
      Armin, thank You for the answer.
      I would think so, yes, but these arrows seemed too weak still.
      It seemed that even feathers couldn't direct them straight at the target, but they took a turn to the left (which makes them weak, because of thumb release and the right side of the bow?)
      This could be the case because sometimes I can't get the right wood shafts even for my 55-pound longbow.
      I would imagine that for the poundage of this bow this is even more difficult, even with modern shafts.
      But I asked in general: do you choose your arrow according to spine charts, or is this not so important for you because of the floating anchor and no nocking point + some intricacies of your shooting techniques that I missed?
      I too must choose +25# shafts for my longbow, 75-80#. Then they fly straight even without feathers up to 25 m, with better archer than me maybe further.

      @@ArminHirmer on the youtube channel Shadiversity there's a constant debate what is right placement of the arrow and how to pull the string, two fingers or three, with thumbring and so on.
      I don't know if you have seen Rings of Power but the elf's draw the string in a kind of backhand style. Someone said it was a native American style. And in the movie "prey" the Comanche use that technic. It looks very uncomfortable but I should try it before I judge it.
      There should be trailers on TH-cam that includes that technic if you want to test it. Could be interesting for your viewers to see and hear your evaluation.

      that comes from how the bow is tuned. You can engineer a bow to fire a light arrow fast, or a heavy arrow a bit slower. this is made to do the latter. Modern fiberglass makes the tradeoff for higher arrow weight not quite as worth it, which is why you don't see that approach with compound bows.
      For comparison, his field points weigh almost as much as my whole arrows do, broadhead and all.
