Superbe symphonie très bien écrite impressionnante par rapport à l'âge du compositeur, la fraîcheur d'inspiration est intacte. Merci infiniment pour ce joyeaux.

The conception of this work is almost unfathomable. While Europe was spilling its seed in vain at Donauechingen, Schmitt was composing this dithyrambic, titanic masterpiece.

Florent Schmitt wrte this second symphony during the last year of his life (the first one is a concerting symphony with an outstandingly complex and difficult pino part). He kept almost the same style all his career long - a quillât for some people, a default for some others. If you know his works well, you can even think that the harsh or ironic characteristics of his style are here for sure, but somehow "softened", as if the unavoidable approach of the end pushed him to have a more gentle look upon the world.

Reminds me of Korngold's Symphony written a few years prior.

While I consider the musical language to be more advanced in the Schmitt compared to the Korngold, there's no question that both symphonies are mid-century masterpieces of the form.

Useless fact: Schmitt I believe lived in Paris and was friends with Delius in the 1880's. I think he made a short score of one of Delius's operas, as did Ravel.

His PSALM 47 is a beautiful work. It is a shame that he was not a very nice human being.
