This year, I changed my mind and chose two pop songs by Taro Hakase. At the end of last year, I happened to be able to listen to his concert, and I found them to fit very well with the guitar accompaniment, so I decided to give arranging a try.
According to Taro Hakase, the first song, "Sicilian Serenade," was written for an offer. Unfortunately, that was postponed, but he couldn't bear to throw the melody away. So, he incorporated it to compose a song about Sicily, a place he had wanted to visit someday, inspired by Nino Rota's "Plein Soleil."
The second song, "Himawari," sunflower, is well known as the theme song of NHK's 1996 morning dama "Teppan," and many of you may be familiar with it. Taro Hakase, who composed this, particularly loves sunflowers among all the flowers. He describes the song's image as the birth of a "summer girl" who stands proudly like a guardian towards the sun.

今年はちょっと趣向を変えて、ポップスの葉加瀬太郎の曲を二曲選びました。昨年の末にたまたま彼のコンサートを聴くことが出来たのと結構ギター伴奏にも合う曲が見つかったので編曲にトライしてみました。まず1曲目の「シシリアンセレナーデ」は葉加瀬太郎によると、あるオファーのためにメロディが先にできて、それが延期になったためそのメロディを捨てるに忍びず、いつか行きたいと思っていた、シチリア島の曲にしようとニーノ・ロータの「太陽がいっぱい」をイメージして作曲したとのことです。2曲目の「ひまわり」は、1996年のNHK朝ドラ「てっぱん」のテーマ曲としてお馴染で、御存じの方も多いと思います。作曲した葉加瀬太郎は花の中で「ひまわり」が一番好きで、曲のイメージについて「太陽に向かって仁王立ちする”夏の女の子”の誕生です。」と言っています。
