not sure if someone has commented this already. i believe the video portrays grief really well. in order to deal with the fact that he and his partner are over, he does a bunch of crazy shit to try and take his mind off of it. the video is noisy and chaotic, and sometimes it drowns out the song, but i think it’s meant to do that. behind that loud exterior, there’s a lingering melody of grief and longing. do a little digging and you’ll find it. kinda shows how when we’re hurt, we bury our sadness in layers of anger and recklessness, but behind it all is just immeasurable pain.

I believe the video showcases how guys/boys/men will do the most random shit, instead of talking about their feelings.
Living a destructive life, start doing drugs, their life is in shambles and even their friends don't know how to talk to them about it, even though they see what's going on in their life and experience it first hand. None of them were taught to talk about their feelings, when they were younger and weren't able to teach themselves.
In all this mess, he still finds time to text his ex. His phone screen being broken is a metaphor as well. He doesn't know how to communicate and instead drowns in self hate and tries to distract himself, with other women, searching for what he has lost with his ex.
Not being able to find or forget about it, being trapped in the endless cycle of his destructive lifestyle.

Only thing I’d change about this is that it’s not that lot of men don’t know how to talk about their feelings, it’s that they’re taught that speaking about their feelings is a bad thing

@@projectpems8304 yeah, being taught not to express your feelings means you wouldn’t have learned how to express emotions in a healthy way. If you’re never taught to even identify which emotions are which and where they come from, it’s pretty hard to verbalize how you feel.

not even just the song itself, but the video is absolutely incredible. the destructive lifestyles depicted hurt my heart. but sometimes if you fall that hard and feel that lost and your heart breaks that much it can happen.
and it so poetically contrasts the soothing melody of the video

this is how i interpret this video:
we see these people, go around causing all this ruckus, destruction, and being complete clowns only to pretend like they’re having fun, when in reality they are just trying to find something that will fill in the hole that their past lovers had left there. They are trying to find something that will bring them the same type of emotions or joy, that the ex once did, but we see that in the middle of the video one of the guy pulls up his phone saying he doesn’t know why he’s doing this to himself and “i miss you”. as well as a page on the computer that wrote “what a woman wants from a man”. people can act a certain way around others, but when they are by themselves again, and in their own thoughts, they still can’t forget the person that once made them the happiest.
The video reminds me of when I was in active drug addiction, or at least part of it does. It just really hit home man. Thankfully I’m clean off heroin for years. If you’re reading this, and you’re struggling, just know this too shall pass. Keep your head up🖤

I love it now but I listened to it the first time with my partner and was actually conflicted because I just couldn’t relate to it AT ALL at any point ever in my life lol. But it’s so beautiful it doesn’t matter. On repeat!!!! and my partner has it on repeat too! we Stan Joji over here lol

Something people may not realize is where this song may be about grief and depression, it also is Joji remembering back when he was Filthy Frank and he didn't have to take things serious and could just live a fun life. Now everytime he looks in the mirror he still sees a glimpse of his old self from when he started.
From my point of view, jojis singing/vocal style is representative of emotional exhaustion. What you associate with a yawning like singing style I interpret as joji being emotionally overwhelmed, fried and drained by the various feelings like grief, loss, loneliness and heartache. It gives a lot of his songs the relatable weight of being stretched thin from all the negative experiences a person has to endure in day to day life.
His whole album "Nectar" is FIRE. Not very often can I find a whole album that I LOVE.
I loved this song when it come out on audio but I was a sobbing mess once the video dropped. I've had a lot of issues with substance abuse and me and my friend group were a lot like this, there's so many photos and videos of great times but behind it all was a group of people latching onto each other and enabling each others worst habits. The shots of some of the lads just sitting on their own are some of the most striking to me in the video because I can literally picture memories of my friends doing that and of me doing it. This video is heartbreaking and so beautiful
Honestly the vocals the music and the melancholy harmony just makes everything come together being hurt or being broken there’s a clear image showing what emotions are coming out and that’s what makes joji special he just sings what he expresses or what he’s been through

Song by itself and then with the video gives you different feelings. One more of a vulnerable/sad vibe and the other a disturbing badass depressing feeling, Joji is a true artist.

What makes this song so beautiful is the fact that this song, this melody and the tone he has used in it is just basically a representation of the lingering melody of grief that plays inside our mind or heart when we're going through something

This song with this music video was so representative of times in my life when I hurt myself. Divorce, drug use, self destruction. Thebchaos overwhelms the melody of depression and lost love... but that chaos is better than being alone with your thoughts.
I definitely need to listen to the song by itself. I love the energy of the video but my brain is trying to keep up with the chaos that I can’t even process the song lol.
Once you get over how good he can sing and listen to the actual lyrics and correlate it to the video is one of the most emotional damning things I’ve ever seen

To me, the video is showing us how destructive & unpredictable love can be. Joji singing "perfect don't mean that it's workin" reminds me of how toxic relationships can be & that we will do just about anything to stop the heartache even if is self destruction.

One of my favourite songs of his is Daylight, it's not that popular but has a different mood to it, still sad but less melancholy. You should try it!

I caught myself at times singing the part "...Glimpse of us" in the chorus and then sing the chorus of Reckless where she starts "Each day goes by and each night I cry" not consciously realizing it was two different songs!!

Joji has improved so much vocally throughout the years. he was amazing before, but ever since Nectar was released he sounds even better.

Everyone’s taking the lyrics more literally and that’s totally fine but I think it’s really about any type of grief. Just losing in general. Losing yourself as much as losing others. And how the two are sometimes painfully linked, the more we try to keep others the more we lose ourselves etc etc sorry it got so deep

The MV is an emotion of chaos and feelings when you want to forget a heart break. So instead of being depress or suicidal- you take the self destructive path and not gaf about anything else. To feel destruction and not the pain.
