    Under indoor lighting the samples have a bark brown tone whereas outdoors they have a lighter golden tone which the ladder is my preference. Either way indoors or outdoors, to my untrained eyes all appear to be the same. Where we may start to see a difference is in the weathering. A time lapsed month to month comparison would be interesting to watch in a future episode. With all that said watching this episode has inspired me to use Cetol natural teak and Cetol gloss finish to refinish all the exterior teak on my 44’ trawler. This will be a huge job that will take me all summer.

    I like the natural teak with the gloss finish...I think the grain is a little darker with the natural teak...but I agree with you, it is subtle between the typer...it does have a little orange tint to it but I have been using it on all my teak for almost 20 years

    Funny, the Sikkens factory is located in my hometown and no more than a 10 min bicycle ride away. It's quite an old company from the late 18th century at that time located in Groningen the north of the Netherlands and since 1939 located in my place. Nowadays it's owned by the much bigger brand Akzo Nobel, also Dutch. Since their products are developed in our often wet country I guess it protects well. I find the results as expected due to the transparent properties of these coatings, they are meant to preserve the wood signature.

      I agree 😁 I’m a big fan of this product line and have been a loyal customer for 30 years. Brilliant 👍

    Thank you for doing this... very interesting info, I work on teak professionally and you wouldn't believe the battle I go through with some customers. I am using an amber finish now from Total boat.... honestly, it looks very similar to your high gloss over natural teak.

    Did you use the same base coat on the Helmsman as the Sikkens top gloss finish?

    • @motorcityboatwerks
      @motorcityboatwerks  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Michael: the helmsman has no base coat. Its is strictly its own varnish applied to bare wood. Only the Sikkens Gloss is applies to a Sikkens base coat. 👍😁Thanks for the comment and be sure to subscribe

    Did you use a clean brush for each finish?

    • @motorcityboatwerks
      @motorcityboatwerks  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Indeed I did. Fresh foam brush each type of coating and each time. 😁👍 We don’t mess about in the Boat Werks 🤓

    Not enough difference to worry about. I’ll worry about getting a boat before I die

    I don’t see much of a difference either. I think the reason they make different ones is for marketing.

    How can finish be so expensive per can? The ingredients can't be that expensive. Not like it's rare and exotic stuff from a rain forest.

    Really surprised China doesn't do knock offs and sell these cans cheap on Amazon.
