What I appreciate the most watching your videos is how California law allows for lane-splitting. Living in Florida is very difficult to enjoy riding a motorcycle, as it was designed to perform. We roast on traffic lights during the summer days and are always at risk of being rear-ended by idiots looking at their phones. What amazes me even more, is how some people in the motorcycle community are against lane-splitting. Travel a little will ya? It's time lane-splitting legislation went national. After riding motorcycles for over forty-five years, in a few different countries, this remains my number one "SMFH" item regarding motorcycle riding in the USA. Thank you for the great review and thank you for letting us know how we could potentially accelerate legislation in that regard. Way to go Utah, for signing lane-splitting into legislation.
Utah surprisingly made a good start but hobbled it by only allowing "filtering" on roads under 55 mph, even if gridlocked. Only useful on city streets... but it's a start.
@John R Borges HI John, I agree. That's why legislation is so important. That person "opening their door" at lane-splitters would have to think twice about it, if it was law. Isn't it rated as 105hp in EU? Is it the charcoal canister that brings that down in the US? The Dyno figures I've seen has it producing 100 at the rear wheel.
I find the XR more comfortable than the R, and not really any less sporty. The choice between them is just preference. Not sure what you’re getting at with the tires. The Road 5 is a fantastic sport touring tire, the S21 is a true sport tire and not directly comparable. Neither is better or worse. There is also a Bridgestone T series offered on the XR, seems to be a 50/50 split between it and the Michelin. Not sure if the R offers a second tire option. Anyway, it was obvious you liked the R more, but to me the XR is like if BMW made a Versys 650 and that’s a big compliment.
I've owned a F900R and I love every bit of it. But most of the reviews I saw say the engine is boring and doesn't have the character. I am not an expert but I really like the engine and sounds. What do you have to say about it? Most of the people or critics felt bored because different modes it has and didn't really test in Dynamic Mode? Is this engine made in China?
Compared with Yamaha Tracer 900 GT, which one is better for average users with few years riding experience? Appreciate if you can do a group test (F900XR, Tracer 900 GT and Tiger 900 Pro GT). You could help me on this for I am seriously to get one of these middleweight sport touring bikes whatever some may argue they are in different type group of motorcycle.
soo... totally unrelated question. i got a scooter for my daily commute and the tires are fairly new, hard compound. now i pumped the tires so it barely deforms when i sit on the bike, and i noticed that now it quickly leans into corners compared to when the tires were softer. 80/90 14" on the front and 90/90 14" on the rears. am i doing this right or do i just reduce pressure again?
adjust the tire pressure to what your motorcycle manufacturer recommends first. The numbers should be on a sticker somewhere on the scooter or located in the owner's manual.
@@MotorcyclistMag wooah, didn't see this reply coming lmao. So, the tires are now on the recommended pressure, i guess that leaves the profile of the tires, since the contact area is rounded. The responses i got from a motorcycle forum suggested that i deflate the tires, but i think that is counter intuitive as it increases rolling resistance, and the fact that i chose this scooter as it is very fuel efficient. From one of your videos, my understanding is that flatter tires are "slower" to lean and doesn't lean much but is smoother, while a round tire profile facilitates quick transition into a lean and the bike wants to hold that lean. I don't mind the "heaviness" of the bike when it transitions to an upright position since the bike itself is light at 100kg. Did i get that right? It just seems odd that such a small, unsporty scooter with a tiny engine is very agile😅
Hi Adam, great review yet again, thank you. I would really like to know which way you would go if you had to choose between this and a Ducati Multistrada 950 and why? Thank you.
I think this bike compares well to the V-strom 1000. Same power, weight and even cost. But, it's a BMW, and has a more up to date spec. When I trade in my DL1000XT, it's more likely to be for this bike than the 2020 v-Strom.
I am looking forward to a test ride on the F900Xr, but when doing a review, a comparison with other bikes in the segment / genre instead of it's baby bro, the r is more real world. Of course, you're a young man and commuting on the R would likely be a real hoot. Touring chops, comfort and pillion capability is real value added element...especially if you can only own one machine. The add on extra$ is typical BMW. Want everything included? The Yamaha Tracer 900 GT is a fine machine and probably is cheaper and cheaper to work on, but not necessary a bike that would likely hold its value / re-sale value as long as a BMW..
Anyone else notice that “middle weight” motorcycles keep getting bigger? I was under the impression that 600 class bikes were middle weight, and 750-900cc were outlier sizes or “cheater”. But I guess I’m mistaken?

This machine is more than capable of high 30's mpg. It's a very frugal engine but should still come equipped with a bigger fuel tank. I believe it's a 105 hp engine not 99 as you mentioned.
Love your reviews Adam! Mileage is the killer on this Bike, Great commuter bike, but not worth touring. 1989 Boxer R100RT (naked), fully loaded goes 232 miles with a 5.8 gallon tank. No upgrade for me.
Those handlebars need to be rotated forward about 20 degrees. KTM may *technically* still be BMW's neighbor to the south, but they have decided to have their engines *made in China* now, so as far as I'm concerned KTM is now a Chinese brand. The 270 degree timing not only produces better performance, but, with a pipe that eliminates the cat, will sound as good as any Ducati. $350 for a ten-minute software download is the very definition of "extortion," and if BMW had a conscience (remember they are German) they would be ashamed. 80/20 road-biased dual-sport tires would be perfect for this bike. Thank you for *NOT* whining about how the XR isn't "off-road-capable" enough. Most GS riders like to pretend they're mud cowboys, but the reality is that all adventure bikes spend 99.9% of their time on roads. People who really ride off-road have dedicated motocross bikes, because things get broken off-road, and nobody wants to be stranded 300 miles from home. The Liberace gold and silver paint scheme makes me vomit in my mouth. The TFT display may be awesome now, but that and the soon-to-be-obsolete-and-no-longer-supported software-driven engine management system will quickly date these bikes. In five years you'll own the equivalent of a $12k iPhone 3 in an iPhone 10 world. Excellent review, but I'll take a hard pass on replacing my all-analog R1150GS with this bike.

Isn't it rated as 105hp in EU? Is it the charcoal canister that brings that down in the US? The Dyno figures I've seen has it producing 100 at the rear wheel.
and... we dont get an adjustable front fork..
I would like to see you ride/review the 2020 Super Duke GT
11:12 is Waheed feeling dangerous today? What was that?
Compared with Yamaha Tracer 900 GT, which one is better for average users with few years riding experience? Appreciate if you can do a group test (F900XR, Tracer 900 GT and Tiger 900 Pro GT). You could help me on this for I am seriously to get one of these middleweight sport touring bikes whatever some may argue they are in different type group of motorcycle.
Did BMW reduce the warranty period from 3 years to 2 years as stated in the video?
In the UK it's been increased from 2 years to 3 years
A friend of mine says Bridgestone tyres are a death trap
I've tested the Tiger 900 didn't like the fit, sat on, rather in. Engine sounds fab. Perfect bike would be bigger tank and tiger engine in BMW
soo... totally unrelated question. i got a scooter for my daily commute and the tires are fairly new, hard compound. now i pumped the tires so it barely deforms when i sit on the bike, and i noticed that now it quickly leans into corners compared to when the tires were softer.
250 msrp for handguards???
really ????
It's bmw. What did you expect?
Made of that premium Bavarian plastic.
About £100 for the GS ones with the metal support. Comes in 6 separate pieces
Hi Adam, great review yet again, thank you. I would really like to know which way you would go if you had to choose between this and a Ducati Multistrada 950 and why? Thank you.
Both are excellent adventure tourer. But, I would prefer multistrada 950 over F 900 XR.
Love your bikes and knowledge/experience. Contrasting with similar bikes with reviews helps also. Love history of bikes also.
Love these commutes.
any chance on your vids you can add service costs via a dealer . I.E first service to Major at what miles / kms due
Hi David, this is a good idea. Thanks for the feedback.
that colour and XR decal baffle me. I properly don't get that.
I think this bike compares well to the V-strom 1000. Same power, weight and even cost. But, it's a BMW, and has a more up to date spec. When I trade in my DL1000XT, it's more likely to be for this bike than the 2020 v-Strom.
What was it at 9:46?
Nice bike, is lane-splitting legal there?
yes, lane splitting is legal in California.
This or Tracer GT?
Good job Adam! How’s the ground clearance when leaning over?
Anyone else notice that “middle weight” motorcycles keep getting bigger? I was under the impression that 600 class bikes were middle weight, and 750-900cc were outlier sizes or “cheater”. But I guess I’m mistaken?
Patrick Callahan ...the way I understand it is because more bikes are increasing 180 -200hp..750-900 are now considered middle weight
Great informative review again, can I ask what gives you’re wearing as they look super comfortable
gloves are listed at the bottom of the review: www.motorcyclistonline.com/story/reviews/2020-bmw-f-900-xr-review-mc-commute/
Motorcyclist Magazine ah great 👍🏻 thanks for that
Still waiting on the KTM 390 Adventure commute 😬
Windscreen adjustment handle and sound of the bike is the only items that bmw need to relook at
I think the screen is very similar to Honda X-ADV. its almost the exact same screen.
Nice looking bike. Can't say like the sound of the engine though. Sounds kind of like a scooter. Maybe it's just the mic on the camera.
No offense but why tell us you're wearing something and not show us?
Solid review!
I'd assume your height is around 175?
I haven’t heard anything bad about them, but my understanding is the engine it is made in China
So is an iPhone and it’s the highest quality mass produced item in history. 🤷♂️ I’ve had no problem with mine so far. Fingers crossed.
A walk around before taking it for a ride will be appreciated :)
TESTING! Love it! Love the way you ride. Watching you ride makes me feel alive. Was jonesin' for some MC Commute. Split those lanes like you're ditching a girlfriend! Thanks for the video, Adam. Whoa! Watch out for the idiots! Good job, buddy. Hey, what about the Kawi Z H2? I know I won't shut up about it broken record style, but...Oh, and be careful about all that corona fearus out there.
Nice man - this was a great comment. You're the winner for sure.
What part of Cali is this? Also this is the first video I’ve seen where you didn’t have to stop at that first light lol.
Pmason718 ... So Cal...orange county
yeah is it Newport Beach or where? looks beautiful.
Rattles like it has a dry clutch tho
900cc became a middle weight... What strange world we live in.
It's just marketing. While actually it's 895cm³, the inline twin engine is also the same as the F750/F850 GS which categorised as "middleweight."
Still would rather have the 950 multi
Nice bike, good review.
0-65 mile from 7:03 to 7:07, pretty good for this category.
it looks so slow on camera i thought it was km/h. Is it because he's upright so the camera's a bit higher?
why is he stopping frequently? Instead, can't he just slow down a little bit, watch and ride?
In The United States a stop-sign means stop. A slow roll without a complete stop, allows a police officer to offer you his/her services.
Just a heads up: every country has a different road rules.
@@Twentyfourvalves oh. In india even in red light, we don't stop befor stop line
@@sriniwonwonrajasekar4243 lol, so you didn't know your own traffic rules? Red lights and stop signs mean the same thing in every country I know of.
It's a travel bike, without a travel fuel capacity. It's naked brother is even more pathetic in fuel capacity.
$12 grand for a parallel twin?
Engine made in China, price made in Germany
wow someone is actually on the bench
Michelin Road 5's are the absolute best tyre I've ever used. But everyone has their own preference I guess...
i wanted to get them but my stupid bike I can only get the 3's
Speedometer unit is mph or kmph?
It's NOT build in Berlin, but in China. They check it in Bayeren, but has no connection with Berlin .
Throw bags on it and compare it to a Yamaha Tracer 900GT...
My dream one
Can tell Adam’s not a big car fan. 6:00 totally misses (ignores?) classic BMW 2002 and then 11:10 totally owns the lane on that ignorant Jeep! 🤣
