Mine would have gone long past 200k if I didn't run into the water issue. Excited to see how high she'll go after the rebuild. Thanks for watching Larry!
I have 478K on my 2005 4Runner V8 2UZFE engine. Timing belt every 90K although I get lazy sometimes I replace them by 130K. Oil change every 5K mobil 1. Tried using 0W 30 fully synthetic oil and engine runs smoother and quieter on morning start ups and the usual engine tick when cold is gone. Had to replace secondary air intake fan by 300K. Finally replaced serpentine tensionernd idler pulley. Its been way overdue wife heard the chirping when engine is cold almost 5 years ago because of these pulleys. This engine lasted 13 winters already and probably more.
Ok so maybe I shouldn’t get rid of our 2005 V8 4R then 😉. Have you had frame rust problems? I live in the rust belt so I’m guessing that’s the reason...
@@telecasterman18 Keep it! But I did have frame rust problems but Toyota did a recall on my year Tundra and they replaced the frame for free so its got a brand new shiny one under there now.

Yeah they were, they have held up pretty well also for only 100$. If you want some extra power dirtydeedsindustries makes a new set of upgraded injectors which helps mix the fuel better and really helps these trucks! He also makes an awesome exhaust kit but its like 3,000$...
So where do I find info on a VVTi motor? This is very helpful. Would like to see a present day follow up video with mileage, compression, oil pressure numbers, oil filter analysis ect.
There is a lot of good info on "first gen tundras" on facebook. They have plenty of into of the VVTI version of this engine. I have a small follow up video on the channel but its not quite that in-depth.
My 04 has almost 300k. That's towing every week, hauling and doing contractor work for the last 19 years. It runs like the day I bought it. Just change the oil every 5k and timing belt every 120k. Amsoil 25k and transmission fluid. I'm doing some pre-rebuild research here. thanks for posting. I'm definitely not buying a 100k dollar truck when the day comes.
Nice video, Im rebuilding a 2004 Tundra 4.7L 2UZE also and this will help. I have two of them and will see which block is the best, the original one had a cracked upper oil pan which bblew into pieces for some reason. Asked Toyota about it since no crank or rods went through ?
Nice job guys! I have an '03 4Runner with this engine but only 160K on it and at 77 years old I only put about 3-5K miles on it per year and that is all street miles so should last me another 21 years no problem ... except I may not last that long!
190,000 miles at the time of the failure (no boost just water in the intake) right now its sitting at about 200,000 miles and its performing great! Parts were about 1500-2500$ with fluids and the sensors and all that. Ill keep a much better detailed list on the next build. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Great Build Guys! Curious how much all the parts and third-party services cost you. I have a 2004 Sequoia that I am thinking of doing similar rebuild for. Current Miles >305k. Thx!!
Where did you get all of your rebuild parts for the engine. I’m looking to buy a 2uz for my 3gen 4Runner and wanted to know where you ordered your rebuild parts
I have a 04 4runner awd with the 4.7 v8 and she's at 230 k and still running great but im looking to do a rebuild soon and the 4.7 is still kind of a legendary mystery to me and im scared to mess with it. Looking to turn it into an overlander in the future but i know that will take a while. Any advice on where to start?
Hey brother, Id say if its not broke dont fix it. Those engines go forever and mine had 200K on it and looked amazing other than the blown connecting rod. The factory does it better than anyone with their tolerances and such. If you need to tear into it, id say just jump right in. Maybe watch this video a few times, if you have any extra questions Id me more than happy to help out with them. Just have confidence, you can do my friend!
Hey man, when you put the engine back in did it take a while for the truck to relearn the idle and run good? Or was it good when you first fired it up?

Love those 4runners, I want one to build up eventually! Make sure you do the water pump whenever you're in there for the timing belt. I had about 150K on my timing belt before I changed it.
The 2uz-fe is an awesome motor but 2 weaknesses. 1 the timing belt change.... its definitely a challenge doing it yourself but will save $1200 if the dealer does it. And the second weakness is the piston rods... they are weak so don't tune or try to raise the rev limiter in those trucks it's set to 5000 redline and I'm pretty sure 5500 in the 05 t0 06 model tundras with the 5spd autos. Other than that u got a 500k + engine. Very reliable
I agree 100%, we should have probably upgraded the rods while we were in there but I dont have any plans for boosting this particular engine so I dont feel too bad about it. As far as the timing belt goes you're correct, its a pain but it hurts paying the dealer that much $$
I've never done major work to my cars before - but I do have patience, time and the desire to learn. I'm also planning on keeping my new to me 03 LX 470 for a long time to come, so I'd like to learn and do as much as possible. Should I still give it a shot? It's got about 150k miles (240k KMs) and I'm not sure if the timing belt has ever been changed. There's no sticker for it anywhere, and when I spoke to Lexus, they wouldn't release the service history to me, but they did say there's no record of the timing belt ever being replaced.
@@docmadhattan I would definitely replace it, much cheaper than a new engine. If you think you can do it yourself then go for it, if you dont think so just have a dealer do it. I love the 470's though, really cool rigs.
Man y’all are artists. This was awesome to watch. I’ll pay you to fix my wife and I’s 4.7 4Runner. It needs manifolds, t-belt and all the pulleys and a power steering pump. 😭😭😭😭
Everyday Outdoor Let me ask you guys this however... with those previously stated repairs that are needed, would it be more cost effective to do them or just swap engines. I haven’t looked too deeply into the price of a rebuilt 2uzfe but I’m guessing it would be similar to what I have + 2 manifolds and a T-belt/WP/pulley job... what’s your input on this since this is something you guys have kind of delt with it in a way. Best regards. -Dusty
@@telecasterman18 Hey Dusty, what I can tell you is that we found that it was more cost effective to save what we could and rebuild components instead of buying new. I believe the price of a 2UZ right now is around 5,000$.. but I am not 100% on this. I would say its cheaper to just re-do the stuff you need..
Where did ya’ll get all the info? Like torque specs, firing order for the pistons, etc etc. sorry if that’s a lengthy answer. If you decide to answer i’d really appreciate it. Thanks!
Hey! No problem at all. Usually we just look on google for a full manual. They are normally a few hundred pages so we use a laser printer and just select the stuff we need. Finding what you need without a glossary is difficult! Hope this helped
@@خالدالحربي-س8خ They were really cheap acutally. I think like 120$ compared to 500$ for name brand ones. No problems with mine so far but ive heard about the flanges warping
The reason the connecting rods on the Tundra 2UZ-FE motors breaks is because they are cast. Same thing with the Sequoias. Both of those motors were assembled stateside. The 2UZ-FE motors that were made in Japan, the ones that went into the GX470, the land Cruiser and the 4Runners had drop forged connecting rods. Those things don't break easy, even under boost. This is the reason Toyota stopped selling TRD supercharger kits for the older tundras, because it would blow the rods.
@@EverydayOutdoor yeah, there's about 20% more material in the old 1UZ rods than in the 2UZ and 3UZ. But that extra mass is less than ideal unless you really need it. The 2UZ rods are also a slightly different alloy than the super beefy 1uz rods. The thick ones were made in the late 80's to early 90's, and the forged 2uz ones started around 99, I believe. But if you're running boost, those 1UZ rods are pretty solid. If you're gonna run a lot of boost though, get some LEXTREMES.
Yeah for sure, ask away! The brand name was Manzo, they were like 120$ so super cheap compared to those JBA's. I didn't notice any power loss from mine but I just had my truck re-geared to 4:56 gears (like 2k miles before it died) which helps a lot. Do you have the 12 hole injectors that dirty deeds sells? I have heard good things about those.
Everyday Outdoor ya know I’m not sure man. I literally just bought it with 132k and looks right off the factory floor. I want to lift it and do all that. Had hopes for the JBA’s. Maybe wi try the 1 inch runners it flows too open. May need to find some headers with smaller runners if I can find them.

@@mildkiller138 Dang, I bet that thing rips.
Pretty sweet video. Which pistons n rods did you use?
DNJ piston heads with stock rods other than the one I destroyed.
What's the country of origin on DNJ pistons? BTW I have garage envy big time now, nice place.
@@bck2808 I can't remember off the top of my head, I'll have to get back to you on that. But thanks! Alex has a pretty sweet set up.
What sand paper grit did you use?
Man y’all are artists. This was awesome to watch. I’ll pay you to fix my wife and I’s 4.7 4Runner. It needs manifolds, t-belt and all the pulleys and a power steering pump. 😭😭😭😭
Thank you very much! How many miles are on it? Thats quite a few different headaches haha but easily do-able
You’re welcome. Yeah they are head aches haha. It almost has 135,000 miles.
Everyday Outdoor it did help a lot. Thank you!
@@panthiawhelan3565 Awesome! And anytime, let me know if you have any other questions
The metal frame always go out first before anything
They ran a recall about 10 years ago and mine was replaced thankfully.
Great video, love this engine I have the 3uzfe and want a 2 also! don't normally suscribe but did since you were at 999 :)
From where you buy the headers
We got them from Ebay
@@EverydayOutdoor how much if they expensive i don't want them 🤣
@@خالدالحربي-س8خ They were really cheap acutally. I think like 120$ compared to 500$ for name brand ones. No problems with mine so far but ive heard about the flanges warping
@@EverydayOutdoor thank you i will search on eBay ⚘
@@خالدالحربي-س8خ Anytime!
Is it possible to put the toyota uz cylinder head on the gm small block v8 302 engine if you make adaptations?
How did you set timing when installing the timing belt? I keep finding conflicting information about TDC vs +/- 10°
Good job , well done !!
Hey thanks!
Добрый день, подскажите пожалуйста момент затяжки датчика детонации на 2 uz-fe?knock sensor
Where did how learn how to do all this?
Hey I need a rebuild kit can you share a link for the one you used.
Ahhhh I did not know that, very interesting. I've heard of people using 1UZ rods in place of the 2UZ ones because they are much beefier.
Can you guys put a link for the overhaul kit. My 2uz sucked water and shut off. I would like to rebuild
Nice work
Thanks brother!
So nice engine 💪🏼🔥
Thank you brother!
If your answering questions what kind of headers are those? I’ve got the JBA shortys i just put in my 05. Lost lots of power.
@@stephanmackie5281 Man i hope so brother, I hate that for ya. Don't let this little hiccup discourage your build. Im not sure if you are apart of the "first gen tundra" page on facebook but lots of good guys on there that are super helpful. Keith cary does lots of exhaust stuff so maybe he can help figure out your issue better than I can.
Everyday Outdoor hey how do I know what generation it is? DOM is 11/04
@@stephanmackie5281 You've got a first gen. Everything from 2000 to 2006 is consider a first gen tundra, after 06 they switched to the big body style.
What kinda lift is on your truck? Awesome video
Thank you, I appreciate you watching! Its a 2.5 in Old Man Emu lift!
Hi..is a tundra truck use chain or belt for timing
Its a timing belt, mine had about 150k on it and was not broken yet. I broke the rod from water entering the engine via a puddle.
Belt most of time fluid leak cause belt to go bad fast
4.6L and 5.7L Toyota truck engines are timing chains. 4.7L engines are belts.
Nice Yota.
Small Block Yota FTW
Thanks man
Nice job!! Inspiring!
Congrats. Good job guys
Thank you! I really appreciate the view
