  • Apollo 30L Snub Nose Pressure Fermenter - Unboxing and review
    Once again, this is not a beer review. This time we're looking at an absolutely fantastic piece of equipment that we picked up and Penny has been trying out after oxidising his last brew.
    You can buy one here from The Malt Miller, and here's what they have to say about it....
    www.themaltmil...
    Fermenting under pressure has huge benefits, including low ester formation, less dependence on temperature control, oxygen-free transfer and beer that is near- carbonated after fermentation. For homebrewers and small batch brewers, pressure fermentation allows for faster fermentation times.
    Features
    Made from BPA-free, bottle-grade PET plastic
    Individually pressure tested
    Pressure-rated at 5 bar

    Apollo Snub Nose Manual
    DIMENSIONS:
    572mm to lid + 30mm to top of posts.

    looking for an affordable fermenter that will let you easily ferment your brew under pressure, without the hassle of cleaning extra valves and accessories? The Apollo 30L Snub Nose Pressure Fermenter can help you take your fermentations to a higher level of perfection!
    Apollo is simple to set up and you’ll get all the benefits of pressure fermentation right out of the box with no need to upgrade or buy more parts. You’ll get great, easy to clean, easy to use features that make pressure fermentation fun.
    Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned professional, The Apollo 30L Snub Nose Pressure Fermenter is the right choice for brewers looking to spend less time disassembling and cleaning their tanks so they can get more time enjoying the outstanding beverages they’ll make with the benefit of pressure on their brew.
    Pressure fermentation means you’ll be able to ferment and carbonate in your Apollo.
    Once carbonated and chilled, you can either drink the carbonated beverage out of the fermenter or carry out an OXYGEN FREE closed pressure transfers to your kegs or bottles.
    Closed pressure transfer is the best way to fill kegs and means that your newly filled keg can go straight on tap, saving you time and protecting your amazing beverage.
    To undertake proper closed transfer, carbonation and draught service processes, you’ll need a CO2 bottle with regulator
    With a smarter conical shape plus the world’s strongest Australian Made clear PET tank material, Apollo Fermenters are the highest evolution of the original Fermentasaurus PET Fermenters first developed by Keg King in 2016.

    Good work guys, ace to see you getting a great result with the FV. That smoked lager looks banging....

    Good review guys. A really nice step up from a bucket fermentor too.
    Penny, you can save a heap of gas on the transfer (gas aint getiing any cheaper these days) by gravity transferring. Set up exactly as you did, but put the keg down lower than the Apollo. Once the beer is flowing, disconnect the gas line on the Apollo, and the spunding line on the keg. Then connect a line directly between those two posts to create a closed loop transfer. Let gravity finish the job, instead of your CO2.

    I’ve just delved into my first pressure fermenter went for the fermzilla 27ltr Gen 3 . 2 tri conical with a pressure kit and spunding valve I’m very exited to try it. Was planning a review so don’t think I’m copying when I do it , although happy to copy your content it’s fantastic. That looks like a great bit of kit and the beer looks lovely cheers 👍🍻

      Hah! Don't worry, we don't think you're copying us. Great news on the upgrade, but we've definitely been there with the "Doesn't fit in the fridge" situation.
      Time for a fridge upgrade!

    My Apollo arrives in about 15 mins. thanks to you two fellas.
    Everyone I know who has used one, claims that they are a real 'game-changer'. I'm looking foward to seeing if this is true and I'll be christening it over the weekend with a 5% Mosaic/Galaxy lager.
    Great work as usual from the Oyster Boys.

    Good video, use 2 leads, one for the beer and one for C02, place the receiving keg lower on
    the floor below the plastic uni-tank.
    Place C02 lead on both and beer leads on both, 5-7psi C02 equal pressure in both vessels and pull the safety valve on the keg to start the flow and save your C02.

    I carbonate my beer in my Apollo just after I start cold crash. 20 psi for about 5 days. Then the beer is fully carbed in the fermenter. Transfer to the keg and pretty much ready to serve.

    To add the gelatin, get a 500ml coke bottle and a carbonation cap. Put the gelatin mix in. Purge it then raise to 15-20 psi and use a short line with two gas disconnects to force the mix into the fermenter. No oxygen exposure 😁

    Great review lads, i bought the very same version a few months back from TMM. I also have 2 all rounders but they now just sit on a shelf as i prefer this one. The only issues i found were a lack of instructions and the filter, which kept clogging so i binned that off in the end and it works really well now without it, but there seemed to be no alernative in the box which was a shame. The spundy valve's are also a great addition and compact so they save on height over the kegland ones

      Thanks so much! I absolutely love the Apollo and generally prefer it to the All Rounder, but I have just tried adding a 150g dry hop addition to the beer that is currently in there and I can't say it was a pleasant or easy process. Any tips?

    • @brookatbroowery
      @brookatbroowery ปีที่แล้ว

      @Oyster Boys Brewing Co. are you trying to push them through the prv as they suggest as I could see that being an issue. All I do is purge with co2, pop the top and pour them in, then purge again.

    • @OysterBoysBrewingCo
      @OysterBoysBrewingCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, well they call that bit the "Dry hop port" so I thought I'd give it a go, using a 500ml bottle with the bottom cut off as a funnel, but it just kept getting clogged up. I'll just do it your way next time! Would be great if it had a tri-clamp lid so I could fit the hop bong assembly to it.

    • @markmulligan1309
      @markmulligan1309 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use a hop bag and magnets. Stick the bag of hops high up inside the fermenter. When ready to dry hop remove the outer magnet and your hops will drop into the beer.

    Another great vid guys, it looks a good alternative to the all rounder with all the gear with it. Where did you get your mini co2 cylinder from, penny?

    • @OysterBoysBrewingCo
      @OysterBoysBrewingCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andy, we use two places near Chester. The one I use is Deeside Gas. Does your supplier not provide the small ones?

      @@OysterBoysBrewingCo No I get mine from BOC currently, who do a smaller one but it's pretty expensive on the rental. I'm not too far from you so will check prices when mine is empty, cheers 🍺

    Looks like good competition for the all rounder. One note with these is to keep them out of the sun when possible. A few minutes won't hurt anything, but definitely store them somewhere dark. Then they should last a really long time.
    Would have been nice to see/hear a bit more about the racking/dip tube. Did it help that the float was fixed onto the thermowell? Was the cake more compacted vs. the all rounder? How did that screen perform? I have good performance with an all rounder now, but only after trimming the dip tube just right, and I'm sure there's room for improving the transfer loss. If this does well 'out of the box' it would be a pretty significant advantage.

    • @OysterBoysBrewingCo
      @OysterBoysBrewingCo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You still have to trim the dip tube on this but the do give you a recommended length to do it to as a starting point. I’m not sure if it being attached to the middle makes any/much difference, but it feels nice!
      The screen performed well, but I’m doing a beer with significant dry hop additions this week so will report back after that

    Nice review! The only thing I would say is that you mentioned to use the different PRV's as a spunding valve, and I really don't think this is good advice at all. Too many clogged/non activating PRV's leading to at worst exploded FVs. Other than that, great work!

    • @OysterBoysBrewingCo
      @OysterBoysBrewingCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point! I've not had a brew that has got wild enough to reach the PRV yet, but I'll be sure to add a spundy for the next brew.

    Wonder if you could cut a hole in the lid where the PRV/Hop port is and fit a 1.5 or 2" weldless triclamp port... loads of options then for dry-hopping etc.

    Hi, great review. Would this fit inside my converted fridge, its normal size fridge with a step on the bottom. would it be possible to remove the metal support and cut a piece of plywood with a hole cut in the middle and placed by the step in the fridge. This would be the new modified support. Thanks in advance.
    Ive got one now and it fits in my fridge.

  • @stripeyjoe

    How does it compare to the all rounder with a pressure kit? Looks to have the same diameter lid now, the small lid in the previous version put me off.
    Is the plastic it's made from a bit more robust? I'm always worried my all rounder will get a dink in it.

    • @OysterBoysBrewingCo
      @OysterBoysBrewingCo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Price wise, this one is £99 but comes with all the bits you'll need if you're happy to use the PRV rather than a Spunding valve, whereas the allrounder will be about £110 including the pressure kit.
      The plastic definitely feels thicker on the Apollo, and the build in handles are really sturdy. No issues moving it with 25+ litres in it.
      The thermowell is a neat touch that doesn't come with the all rounder, as is the stainless filter for the end of the dip tube.

    • @stripeyjoe
      @stripeyjoe ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OysterBoysBrewingCo Thanks! I might move across when my all rounder fails or if I need a second FV. I did fit a central thermowell to the all rounder but found I got massive temp swings because of the thermal mass of the wort, I prefer mounting the ink bird probe to the side of the FV and additionally monitor using an iSpindel

    • @OysterBoysBrewingCo
      @OysterBoysBrewingCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      How reliable do you feel the readings on an iSpindel are when you are fermenting under pressure? or do you just use it as a measure of "Is it finished?"

    • @stripeyjoe
      @stripeyjoe ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OysterBoysBrewingCo I usually calibrate it at the start of brewing by adjusting the OG to match whatever the hydrometer said, it tends to be a few degrees high at the end due to the hop crap etc stuck to the lid, the one I'm fermenting now is showing as 1.015 but it's probably more like 1.010. It is great for showing that fermentation is completed though and also good when you are doing stuff like wanting to raise temp by a couple of degrees when 50% done etc. Also, it's only £35!
