      I am Muslim and you can say things in a better way. Only Allah Swt accepts who will go to heaven not us.. In Islam, we do not even know if we are going to heaven 100% so we should be people to strive in the way of the truth.

      Bilal Younas - Idiotic, mindless, unrealistic, and self-oriented people like you are the reason Islam has such a bad name today. You should take that offensive and controversial comment down. By the way, I'm a Muslim and I literally was embarrassed and ashamed to to see someone say something that awful. All the hate for our religion is better justified than the reasoning for our decisions on what to say and do when it comes to people like you.
      In the Qur'an it states that all people will be judged based on the righteousness of their decisions during life, not purely their religion.

      I think it is more about how the answer would be correct if you use significant number to make the answer less precise , becouse if you start with less precise numbers they are most probalbly round up at first place from their precise form so when you calculate these rounded numbers you must make the answer less precise to make sure its more correct than the unprecised answer.

    Your analogy is brilliant. Really made this concept click for me--I only wish teachers could explain it as easily and clearly as you did...then we could all avoid the headache of students complaining that this concept doesn't make sense. Teachers set themselves up for failure when they present sig figs as this obscure and bizarre concept that no one understands. Thanks so much for this video!

    my chemistry teacher told us that on some problems we shouldn't use sig figs or else we will get a really inaccurate answer and when i asked her how will we know she said you just will. and sure enough on a test there was one such problem and of course i didnt know and used sig figs getting the answer wrong
    and i still dont quite understand. so you use imprecise measurements and get an imprecise answer that just looks precise so you need to make the imprecise answer less precise just to make it so that it doesnt look precise?

    • @mamtapuri6197
      @mamtapuri6197 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      we don't mean to show it imprecise....
      but it doesn't make sense to write the whole answer (with all decimals) because it is uncertain, meaning thereby inaccurate...So we show that the answer is 1.9 that is it lies between 1.86 to 1.95 ......
      we are uncertain at 1st decimal place ...
      so it doesn't make sense to show the further decimals...
      i hope you get it now

    I have a question, hehe, I've been thinking, let's say you have a big piece of land, and by some reason you want to put 3 division pieces of 3 meters, you have a ruler that can only meassure one decimal of meter, so you meassure 3.0m. So now you multiply 3.0*3 and you get 9.0m right, same precision you begin with, but now that you see that it will only take 9.0m you say, well, I rather make 4 division of 3 meters, so again you multiply 3.0m *4 and now you end up with 12, but, you can only have 2 significant figures, so your result is actually 12.m not 12.0m, but if you instead of multiplying you make the sum, you end up with 12.0m, so what to do?
    I mean from your instruments 12.0 is doable and with the same precision as your instruments.
    Or lets say you have a land of 12.0m and you want to divided in 5 pieces, , now you have a by significant figures, 4.00m but that is way more precise than your instrument, but you have 3 significant figures just as the one you begin with.
    Or in your very example you end up with 2.0 grams per cc, but that .0 is more precise than your instruments, that .0 you cannot know it, because your instruments cannot meassure a decimal of a gram.

    Hi Tyler, you are an awesome teacher and thank you for making all these videos! I only have one question about one of the words you used in this video. Why did you use the word precise instead of accurate? Based on the definitions of the two words, isn't it better to use the word "accurate" since the rocket laser scale can measure something closer to the actual value?

    When we estimate mesurement uncertainty in chemical measurement the general rule is that we put the final answer in only either one or two significant figures. Are we being more conservative here because some of our measurements that we used may have only one or two significant figures while others may have more significant figures?

  • @optimusprimo

    awesome tyler is the man! But question??? is accuracy a better term than precise for the locations downtown, since precision means close relative to other measures, whereas accuracy refers to close to true measure (like the actual location)? (which I learned from tylers other videos haha)

    really fantastic but by kids asked me how can i deal with 3 x 5 in terms of significant figures, i would be grateful if you tell me

    • @vczfwashere
      @vczfwashere 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think these rules are useful only in dealing with measurements of limited precision, not abstract numbers in math. If you know you have exactly 3, that is the same as 3.0, 3.00, 3.00000 etc. You can set it to as many significant figures you need and do not need to round. So 3 x 5 = 15.
      So if you measure 5.234 and want to multiply it by exactly 3, then 3 x 5.234 is actually 3.000 x 5.234 = 15.70.
      When faced with illogical outcomes, like 3 x 5 = 20, the real problem is not with the process of using significant figures, but the low precision of the inputs.
