Why are Significant Figures Important?

What's the point of significant figures?!? Really, significant figures (or significant digits) can be such a pain in the neck. What is the point? Significant figures tell us how to round, but they also make sure that the answer we get from a math problem is not more precise than the numbers that we started with. Accuracy and precision are both important with significant figures and digits.

I still fail to understand the purpose of significant figures. You say it is so that nonprecise measurements don't give us precise results, but that seems like something very silly to care about. So what an answer has a lot of digits? No scientist will look at the final answer and assume the precision of which the starting numbers were measured. They should understand that two numbers can be divided to form a more extensive or irrational number.

I am Muslim and you can say things in a better way. Only Allah Swt accepts who will go to heaven not us.. In Islam, we do not even know if we are going to heaven 100% so we should be people to strive in the way of the truth.

Bilal Younas - Idiotic, mindless, unrealistic, and self-oriented people like you are the reason Islam has such a bad name today. You should take that offensive and controversial comment down. By the way, I'm a Muslim and I literally was embarrassed and ashamed to to see someone say something that awful. All the hate for our religion is better justified than the reasoning for our decisions on what to say and do when it comes to people like you.
In the Qur'an it states that all people will be judged based on the righteousness of their decisions during life, not purely their religion.

Your analogy is brilliant. Really made this concept click for me--I only wish teachers could explain it as easily and clearly as you did...then we could all avoid the headache of students complaining that this concept doesn't make sense. Teachers set themselves up for failure when they present sig figs as this obscure and bizarre concept that no one understands. Thanks so much for this video!

Hi Tyler, you are an awesome teacher and thank you for making all these videos! I only have one question about one of the words you used in this video. Why did you use the word precise instead of accurate? Based on the definitions of the two words, isn't it better to use the word "accurate" since the rocket laser scale can measure something closer to the actual value?
