In OK in 1988 during a tornado and hail storm, we had softball size hail (I grabbed one off the front porch and put in freezer). It broke through our skylights (glass flying everywhere) through the metal air conditioning system outside, ripped the liner out of our inground pool and destroyed cars in car lots. It was the craziest storm I’ve been in.

As a new subscriber from Calgary, thank you for talking about the June 13 event. Luckily I only got very heavy rain with occasional pea sized hail but you still see the scars of hail dents when you enter the NE. This same storm went on to produce 2 weak tornadoes in southern Alberta as well. All in all, a very destructive yet beautiful storm, and is what triggered my interest in weather, which lead me to you.

@@weatherboxstudios some houses in the NE had entire faces of siding ripped down by the hail it was so bad, entire sides of some houses had every the window smashed too. I was surprised as in the NW only 10 mins away we had nothing but a few pea sized stones as mentioned.

Yet another Calgarian here, the house I lved in in 2020 was battered pretty heavily, though fortunately no windows broken. We did end up with a flooded basement though. And again in 2021, after which we moved out. Yeah, the hailstorms here are incredible, as are the mesocyclones and supercells. One thing you can count on in june/july/august are amazing storms to watch

In the early '80s a storm hit Bowers Beach Delaware that produced a strong easterly wind, driving golfball-sized hail onto houses, buildings, vehicles and any exposed living creatures.
My grandparents home had all of the vinyl siding on the west-facing side completely smashed, along with all of the windows on that side. All of their vehicles ;looked like someone used a ball-peen hammer on the body, with every surface divoted from hail impacts.
One of their neighbors, caught out on his tractor during the storm, suffered bruises and head-injuries while trying to get back into the barn. He spent a few day in the hospital.
    Hailstorms are no joke

The reason the great plains and Midwest has such giant hail is because you have high lapse rates over the Rockies and those high lapse rate spills into the great plains and Midwest as high mid level lapse rates. And then when you have a storm system coming through and a cat breaks the convection can use those very steep mid-level lapse rates that spill over from the Rockies and allow for very large hail formation.

Once it hailed in Chattanooga, TN the same day there was freezing rain. There was freezing rain in the morning and in the evening it was about 37 degrees and it started thunderstorming and a lot of small hail fell. I guess it did not take much of an updraft to lift the water droplets to freezing levels because it was so cold. Everyone else thought it was just big sleet but I knew better.

The hailstorm that hit Denver was no joke. All of my coworkers vehicles were destroyed. Ironically I was suppose to drive back home to Missouri that day, but I was homesick so I left right after getting off work that Saturday before. One of my coworkers sent me a clip of the hail falling telling me what I had missed. I was so lucky as our job was in Golden which was one of the hardest hit areas.
I got lucky prior to that when I still living in Saint Louis when those two back to back hailstorms hit. I was on the southwest side of town and the storms hit in the area where I lived. My sister called me frantic because she knew that I was getting off work right when the storms hit to ask if I was ok. I said yes, just got caught in some heavy rain. By the time I got back to the northern part of Saint Louis county you could see all of the damage.

I remember when I was about 13-14 I was out in a cow pasture behind our house with a few neighbors. All of a sudden the sky got SUPER dark out of nowhere and it started hailing softball sized hail. We ran under the nearest tree because the houses were hundred of yards away. For about 5 minutes we huddled together while limbs were getting ripped off trees around us. It ended up killing 2 cows in the pasture we were in. It broke every car window within about 5 miles of us. We got lucky that day. That was over 20 years ago and I still think about it every time the sky gets dark. I’ve lived through probably 50 tornados, but hail scares me even more.

You should make a video about the tornado alley and how it’s expanding rapidly over the last year and a half. In 2009 the alley only included 5 states. If you search up a map as of now, it’s so different it’s honestly terrifying. States like Kentucky and Tennessee and even Indiana are use in it now. It’s a huge issue that almost nobody knows about. You’ve got to make a video about that.

    • @JangoDjarin

This is not technically true; “Dixie Alley” has been a term in use since the early 1970s. It just hasn’t been talked about as much, until recent years (especially after the 2011 Super Outbreak), so it only seems like it is expanding when in reality the Southeastern US has been a hotbed for tornadic activity for many, many decades.

It went from not existing to a big ol ef3 in a minute or so. I don't know many people who make good videos on stuff that might notice a comment so this was my first choice.
