As a hardcore Paper Mario fan who has spent hundreds of hours on the franchise - just the first two games alone, though I've played all of them - and someone who tried SO HARD to like Color Splash and ultimately couldn't be bothered to even finish it...I gotta say, THIS is absolutely an indie spiritual success in the way other indies have revitalized other formulas. I'm only partway into it (I just started Chapter 3) but the built in options for harder difficulties, multi-character party mechanics, just all of what it does on top of being a fun and charming world is just...great. The presentation is a touch lackluster at times, but it's very understandable given the scope of the game for an indie title.
I didn't even bother to finish the first level of Colour Splash, I started playing it, and after only a few minutes, I was like "This... this is just Sticker Star. Again!".
So I just turned it off, went back to playing Paper Mario 64 on the Virtual Console, and never looked at it again.

@@sontho6995 Lol are you kidding me ? Where is the partner system ? Where is NPC with unique design (fuck off generic toad). Where is the badge system ? Where is the original story ? Where is the boss with unique design (not just generic enemy like Bowser, Bowser Jr, Peter Piranha, etc).

If Jose and the rest of the Moonsprout team, an indie developer from Panama, can continue making games like Bug Fables in the future, I can see them being a suitable replacement for the Paper Mario franchise. It's sad that indie devs have to pick up the slack from the major 1st party devs who refuse to listen to their paying customers, but it also makes me happy knowing that others still love the classic Paper Mario battle mechanics as much as I do. Bug Fables is a steal at only $25, but it's absolutely worth $60 with all the hard work and effort put into the game. By comparison, other 1st party games that do sell for $60 (Color Splash, Sword/Shield, Tennis Aces, etc.) are only worth half that much because of the lack of content or effort.

its not sad, its awesome. We the consumers don't have to wait on shitty corporations that really only care about money to make games we like. I am such a proponent of Indie Devs. I'd much rather give them my money.

Yasss Bug Fables and Hollow Knight. 2 indie games that are worth 60 dollars due to the effort put into it. Most 1st party switch games arent even worth half that price tbh. Sword and Shield felt rushed. Aces didnt feel like 60 dollar material either. Origami King too that game only feels worth a solid 25 dollars at best tbh.

@@franciscovaldes4107 i bought it after watching Arlo's vid. I like the game for the most part but the overworld abilities are so poorly implemented and they have so many puzzles involving them that I doubt i'll slog through all that and actually finish the game.
Milli I think the ability’s in the overworld are fine enough, there was only two times that it actually bothered me in the in the seven chapters the game has.

You forgot to mention that you can switch the team's position during battle at the beginning of each turn with the X button. The character in front gets an attack boost, but will be targeted by enemies more often.
I'd prefer more original indie games like this that are spiritual successors rather than fangames. Beautiful!

Yeah that's literally my only issue with BF. Specially involving ice blocks (and aparently there's a bug (heh) in consoles that makes Kabbu hits the ice blocks weaker, making the whole experience more irritating).
But overall it's a good, if not great, game.
The only thing I had trouble with was vi’s beemerang
I agree. It’s so good (and I consider it phenomenal in almost every regard) but there were times I struggled and wondered if I was going the wrong direction, only to realize I just flubbed the odd platforming. Vi’s beemerang is also hard. But I’m not good at platformers, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Just finished this game 100% and god i want more! I want a sequel, maybe going to explore the world more. I want more of my favorite characters
I've been following this game's progress since it was in development and pre-ordered it as soon as it was available on the eshop. It had been so hyped up, and I had such high expectations for it. Oh my god it lives up to every one, I absolutely love Bug Fables. Every OG Paper Mario fan should definitely pick it up.

A more challenging Paper Mario? I love it!
I absolutely love this game. It's extremely rare that a game grips me from beginning to end, but Bug Fables has done exactly that.

To expand:
• In combat You can switch character order at the start of a turn. You can also attack in any order you want making for a sort of combo like battle system where you need to decide how best dispatch enemies. For example If I put a character in the front that character attacks deal more damage but gets targeted by enemies more often. Blocking attacks is greatly incentivised too.
• Badges give buffs and some come with nerfs in say attack or defense so mixing and matching is hugely rewarded. i feel the game has a bigger emphasis on badges more so than paper mario.
Some other points I wanna touch on:
• Music is amazing and is one the strong points. Similar to Paper Mario.
• Worlds and places are pretty varied. im at the half of the game and Ive been to around 8 different locations/worlds. Puzzles actually make you think.
• Characters are loveable and memorable and dialog is charming / funny.
• The aesthetic is a bit jarring at first but gets way better as you progress and you absoluetly get used to it.
• Many, Many sidequests that get you useful items and badges.
• Every character gets a good deal of attacks to use. badges provide come of these.
• Story is simple at first but opens up nicely. it gets really interesting i must say
• Game is cheap at $24 on switch e-shop
Not gonna lie, Zions “mini review” convinced me more to get it than the “official” review. I love seeing the more personal reasons for liking the game
This game is a wonderful experience that stands on its own merits while building on its influences. A few negligible snafus, but overall the team did such an amazing job with pretty much everything.
I'm loving this game so much, personally and I know this might be heresy but ... Bug Fables is better than Thousand Year Door. The writing and game difficulty are clearly not made as babies first rpg it's great.
The only major problem I have with Bug Fables is that there isn't a sequel. It has some areas that need polish, but it is an amazing game.
I'm on the fence because I haven't played TTYD in forever, but there's a reason TTYD has been in my top 5 for all these years so I can't say for sure. I definitely place it above 64 though, Bug Fables is so freaking great!
A nice review, but there probably should've been less emphasis on how similar it is to paper mario since it makes it seem like it's a slightly worse version of paper mario when it easily surpasses the old games in several ways. It certainly does owe a lot of its identity to its inspiration, more than a lot of indie games that are inspired by old classics, but it still has various new ideas to set it apart that all work well together.
How does it surpass them?
@Hugh Janus for example, one flaw of the old paper mario games is that they were too easy in my opinion bug fables increases the difficulty just enough to make it fun
I'll buy it as soon as I'm able to, looks really fun! I really hope this does really well, because this kind of RPG is something that really should be back.
Funny characters and interactions, in a varied world that hides secrets and lore, with a fun, yet simple but expandable combat system? I'm all for it.
Our opinions of the game were very similar (all I can remember that we did not have in common- in terms of opinions here- was that Kabbu’s my favorite main character, rather than Vi).
I was looking for great reviews that I can share and this fit the book!
I loved this game, never played paper mario and got it cuz of the art style, totally fun, surprisingly in depth backstories, worth the money

@@somedude1324 I heavily disagree there. TOK was worse than SS IMO. I know it is an unpopular opinion, but I have many reasons for it. Moonsprout Games does what Nintendon't, which is make a good Paper Mario game.

I’m currently playing the game and my only gripe is Hard Mode medal or Extra EXP medal don’t work and give you a BIG disadvantage. It heavily realize on how high level you are really. For anyone who want a challenge just play normal it’s still hard.
Just saying only use hard medal on bosses that how you get extra medal from that big white bug in the beginning of the game
Got it and absolutely love it. With the trailers from Origami King on the horizon, I was so excited to see this game as it is what I was hoping the new paper mario would be like. But I got a feeling it's not going to be exactly like this. I hope this does well and we see future sequels or new IPs with the same combat and theme. Thank you Devs and thank you for reviewing this!

6:15 through 6:45 - same here, Zion! Super Paper Mario on the Wii was my first Paper Mario, and I enjoyed the living heck out of it. Sadly, I never beat it either. And I've also always wanted to play Paper Mario 64 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, but sadly I never owned an N64 or a GameCube :(

Color Splash honestly wasn’t a bad game, it was just disappointing compared to the older ones. Sticker Star was pretty bad though

It certainly was better than TOK IMO. I honestly disliked TOK more than SS. I know how unpopular my opinion is, but it is how I honestly feel.
The issue with the new Paper Mario's isn't exploration and puzzle solving. 64 and TTYD had tons of stuff to get you exploring like badges and tons of puzzles in the linear sections of the game. The difference is that the puzzles and exploration isn't the combat. Oh and also the overwhelming number of toads and unique "characters" don't have names. The latter basically everyone agrees is bad. Having characters and story is something people want to see. But the former is where the acquired taste is. I don't think puzzles being the battle system is a good idea but more exploration stuff is cool
It’s a genuinely good game. It doesn’t put so much effort into “looking good” or “having fresh new ideas” like the new Pap Mars, it’s just a fun game to play all the way through. Like, it doesn’t change the formula much because it doesn’t need to. And it still definitely makes some improvements.

Just finished playing bug fables for the first time and I absolutely loved it. However i am noticing one issue that none of these reviews are talking about. The block pushing puzzles. For the most part they are pretty inoffensive, but there are a handful that are frustrating and bad. The most egregious one being in the final dungeon right before the epic finish, bringing all the excitement and buildup to a screeching halt. One look at the room and you will instantly solve the puzzle, but hitting that iceblock across those moving platforms will be a boring frustrating nightmare... again, i would highly recommend this game, this is a pretty minor issue in an otherwise fantastic game. Just felt the need to point this issue out since no one is talking about it in their reviews.
The only thing that bugs me is the pay gap from over 10€ from the switch to steam version.
I may know that this game is worth the 30€ price. And I don't mind a little "switch tax" but that seams to much. 🙁

I don't either, but that's just how people are. It's not too be malicious, it's just people drawing comparisons to the information they already have, and most people happened upon HK first despite Bug Fables having more history.

You said you loved the game but you make it seem like a worse version of the original two paper mario games when in fact it’s actually better than them in my opinion. You called bug fables a “clone” of Paper Mario when in reality it just takes inspiration from those games. I would say this game is 30% Paper Mario and 70% original
The worst thing would be the platform. It's not awful, but it can get on your nerves, but aside from that's, it's an amazing game.

This game helped me hate bugs a little less. Yeah it's that good.
But why tho? In paper mario I legit felt stronger upon leveling up. In bug fables I feel just as vulnerable as when I started. Never had to abuse items in paper mario but I definitely do In this game. Also, NPC's are stingy as hell giving me good medals (example, the bee hive with the bee professor). Ughhhh!!!! This game is great but is not perfect by any means!
You… absolutely can get stronger in this game if you play your cards right. The game demands a decent degree of competency, and needing to use items just means the game makes you use your resources. The challenge didn’t jump the gun and steadily progressed while giving you tools to react accordingly. The level ups aren’t as strong, especially for health which could make you a bit ridiculous in both games, but you can still make the most of them

If I was a big fan of Paper Mario TTYD (still my favorite game ever and I've been a gamer for about 30 years now), but disliked Sticker Star and Color Splash, I'm going to like Bug Fables, am I not? I mean Sticker Star was all shades of shit but I really did want to give Color Splash a chance. I tried it several times but... the combat system was so pointless it killed the game for me.
